They're taking the covers off! If they do, somehow, manage to dry things up in time there won't be many people here to see the play.

These two - umpires Marais Erasmus and Ashan Raza - will be out momentarily for another inspection and there is big news from Edgbaston...
I have to say it seems to have got worse at Edgbaston since the last inspection based on the images I'm seeing.
The ground staff are still working away but I'm not sure there is much prospect of a resumption tonight.
We'll find out - surely - in 10 minutes or so.

I don't know about Edgbaston, but it ain't rained for an hour here, 12 miles away in Aldridge.

I'm preparing myself to look foolish again...
The super soppers are out but it looks pretty grim again at Edgbaston.
We've got nearly 20 minutes until the next inspection but the odds are surely in favour of it being called off for the day?
I have said that before (some 20 minutes ago) and the umpires made a fool of me...

Lots of laughs, and some groans, in the press box as they announce another inspection at 6pm.
What is the point? It's still pouring down!
Well, that's a surprise. The wait goes on and the umpires will have another look in about 25 minutes.

I think by the look of it, we will be receiving a text message shortly saying it is off.

There are two teams playing and there is one that desperately wants it to be called off and one desperate to play.

It's never a promising sign when the umpires have got their umbrellas up. All of the ground staff's equipment is pretty irrelevant. I suspect this won't be a long review.
The umpires are heading back out and this time they have an umbrella. This could be a brief inspection.

Patrick Brennan: Stuart Soon-to-be-on-Sky non-Walker
Fred, Brighton: Sanath Jabba-suriya
Those covers are still in place so maybe it is the latter. The ground staff also appear to be heading off. That might be a sign that an abandonment is imminent.
There is movement in the middle.
The issue is, it is difficult to tell whether the ground staff are about to take off the outer covers or if they're battening them down ahead of another downpour...

The news is we'll have another inspection at 17:30 BST, obviously.
It is still raining.
Anymore rain and it is likely curtains but that discussion between the umpires and the chief groundsman that Matt mentions was lengthy enough to suggest there is still hope of play as it stands.

The umpires have just emerged for their inspection. There's a bit of classic pressing the foot into the turf to test it. They're now in conversation with the head of the groundstaff.
