Nathan Lyon came and went very quickly. Falling into England's trap and giving Ben Duckett catching practice in the deep off an Ollie Robinson bumper...

England had to wait another 14 overs for their next wicket as Pat Cummins hit two big sixes off Moeen Ali - who struggled with an injury to his spinning finger - in a useful stand with Usman Khawaja.

Some funky fields from Ben Stokes helped get Khawaja in the end. The opener made a superb 141 but perhaps distracted by England's Flying V formation, he was bowled by Ollie Robinson...

The session ended well for England but it didn't start that way.

Alex Carey was dropped by Jonny Bairstow fourth ball of the day. But Jimmy Anderson did get his man eventually, pegging back the left-hander's middle stump...

The hover cover is just hovering next to the pitch during the lunch break. It is not raining at the moment but the groundstaff might know something.

This series has got 2005 levels of Ashes tension written all over it. Two top teams, very evenly matched. Not quite evenly enough for the Aussies though eh!

It is a one-innings contest. On a pitch like this a lot will depend on how England play Nathan Lyon and Moeen Ali's finger spin.

Let's just hope the weather plays a fair game for us.

  9. Lunch - England lead by seven on first inningspublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 18 June 2023

That is lunch and after Australia had the best of the first hour today, the second belonged to England.

Those four quick wickets mean they take a slender first-innings lead. Essentially though, it's a one-innings shootout.

What a Test match this has been so far!

People lost their minds at England's declaration on day one. Just imagine what is going to happen when they pull out tonight leaving Australia a target of 250...

Scrap that - no need for a delay! England take a first-innings lead!

Ollie Robinson gets his third as Pat Cummins skies the attempted hook shot. Ben Stokes came in to take the catch.

After toiling for so long, England have mopped up the tail in next to no time!

Why are so many Aussies struggling with the short ball on such a slow pitch? Surely they get loads of chin music when they play on much quicker surfaces than this back home?

With Australia nine down, lunch will be delayed by half an hour if England don't take a wicket in this over.

The wicket of Khawaja has made me think that Ted Lasso has been giving Total cricket advice to Ben Stokes. What would you call that field formation?

Great weather (so far), fantastic crowd, runs, wickets and funky fields. Don't you just love Bazball Ashes cricket?

Six England fielders had a front-row seat for that Ollie Robinson wicket. What an unorthodox field setup.

That was baseball at its finest.

I have seen Pat Cummins play a few IPL innings. He can strike a ball.

Josh Hazlewood is the last man for Australia and he gets off the mark with a thick outside edge through point for one.

Wow! Pat Cummins knows the short ball is coming from Stuart Broad, gets himself set and nails the ball over the leg side for a big six!

A single from the last keeps Cummins on strike. England's lead is down to seven.
