I think Stokes fancies getting in there. This is going to be fun!

An exciting little period here as England look to keep their foot on the gas and get some wickets.

  2. Aus 369-6published at 110 overs

It's time for the short stuff and the way Pat Cummins plays Stuart Broad's bouncer late in the over, it might just work.

The Australia skipper fends it off but about as unconvincingly as he might safely do.

Ben Stokes calls for the lid and goes in at short leg. But Cummins is able to tuck the last ball past him for two.

PJSweeney: Seriously, can someone get those two policemen back into the batter’s sight line?

I'm not sure if the speed gun is right but one ball in that Ollie Robinson over is clocked at 72mph.

He's back up to 79mph next ball so might just have been an incorrect reading but given Robinson missed the Ireland Test through injury, if his pace drops too much you have to start wondering whether he is fully fit.

This is how James Anderson has bowled to Australia's left-handers so this morning, consistently hitting a good length - including the delivery that bowled Alex Carey.

How many would have Root scored if England didn't declare? It's one of those decisions which could be talked about for the next couple of years.

Stuart Broad continues after drinks and is on the money first up, getting it to nip back to Pat Cummins.

Just a single from the over. What England would give for a wicket now.

Re Tuffers 1143: Root almost always gets out quickly when restarting after being unbeaten overnight. I don’t think we sacrificed many runs by declaring. Could’ve picked up a couple of wickets and then it would’ve been a genius decision. It’s the missed chances that have cost us, not the declaration.

    Aus 364-6published at 107 overs

After a couple of singles early in the over, Ollie Robinson starts to settle in and challenge the stumps.

A bumper ends the over, worked off his hip by Pat Cummins for one.

Time for drinks - it's been Australia's morning so far.

Change of bowling, Ollie Robinson is on to replace Jimmy Anderson.

You get the feeling it is bubbling up for a storm later on. It was very hot out there, the pitch is so dry out there, dry as a bone.

  13. Aus 362-6published at 106 overs

    Cummins 21, Khawaja 138

Maiden over from Stuart Broad and a slight miscue to end the over from Usman Khawaja.

I'm not sure if it was a slower ball or it just held a touch in the pitch but Khawaja is through the shot early and chips the ball leg side... but short of the mid-wicket fielder.

In other news, Moeen Ali is back on the field for England. We'll soon see if is able to bowl.

Moeen’s sore finger hardly a surprise. Like a guitarist who’s not played for a while, an off-spinner’s fingers will have lost that thick layer of skin that get’s built up over time.

England will need to solve it quickly…

Who would have thought picking 1) A wicketkeeper who has been out injured and not picked for their keeping, and 2) A spinner who hasn't played red ball cricket for an extended period, would see one drop a bunch of crucial catches and the other off injured with a finger injury from not being match fit?

  17. Aus 362-6published at 105 overs

Pat Cummins is trying to force the issue but the accuracy of Jimmy Anderson means he is unable to get the ball away.

The Australia captain eventually finds the gap last ball, punching through the covers for two.

Meanwhile, if you're wondering how England will approach their second innings, Harry Brook has just been doing a bit of shadow batting that involved skipping down the pitch...

Rob Meech: It’s no surprise that someone who hasn’t bowled with a red ball for two years is struggling with his spinning finger. Moeen’s selection was a risk and he was always going to be targeted by the Aussies. They’ll be ruthless.

I think this pitch is going to start doing stuff, like that delivery to Carey, someone like a Scott Boland who looks to hit the pitch on the off stump time and time again. I'm nervous for the first time in this match.
