Dent is forward to defend Carse outside off stump at a breezy Riverside.
He squirts an inside edge away to fine leg for one.
A leg bye off Prestorius at the other end takes Gloucester to 50.
Surrey lead Division One table by 23 points from Essex
Surrey all-rounder Jordan Clark hits 107 against Nottinghamshire
Only 4.4 overs possible between Lancashire and Essex at Blackpool

Alex Hoad, Ben Pheazey and Paul Grunill
Durham v Glos 50-1
Dent is forward to defend Carse outside off stump at a breezy Riverside.
He squirts an inside edge away to fine leg for one.
A leg bye off Prestorius at the other end takes Gloucester to 50.
Middlesex v Northants 34-1
Justin Broad gets a nasty lifting ball from Higgins which spits off a length and strikes the batter on the glove.
He did well to keep the ball down.
Plenty in this pitch for the Middlesex bowlers.
Yorkshire 63-0 (15 overs) v Worcestershire
It looked like there was rain in the air here. And it had already arrived this morning in other parts of the county - and even outlying parts of the city.
And now, after 61 minutes' play, umpires David Millns and Chris Watts have taken them off, as raindrops begah to fall just as they had met in the middle for a consultation over their light meters.
Kent 29-3 v Warwickshire
From 21-0 to 29-3 in 16 balls.
Michael Burgess stands up for the final ball of Chris Rushworth's over and it's worked a treat, Rushworth finds the edge of Harry Finch's bat and Burgess holds on to to send him packing for no score. 39 wickets for Rushworth.
Skipper Jack Leaning, who opted to bat of course, comes in to join Tawanda Muyeye and hopefully justify his decision.
Yorkshire 61-0 v Worcestershire
Ged Scott
BBC Sport at New Road
Solid start by Yorkshire openers Adam Lyth and Fin Bean after being put in at New Road, under heavily-laden slate skies.
Although they have Jack Haynes back after a knee problem, Worcestershire are without England absentee Josh Tongue and his fellow Notts-bound pal Dillon Pennington. Also a knee injury, apparently.
And the Pears are also missing skipper Brett D'Oliveira.
After missing through illness for the Pears' last game, the home draw with Derbyshire, Dolly is absent for a different reason today.
His wife is due any day with rheir second child - and the captain has been redeployed to field elsewhere.
Surrey 47-1 v Notts
Opener Dom Sibley has passed 2,000 first-class runs and is going about things in his usual unhurried, phlegmatic way.
Tom Latham forces Jake Ball away through backward point for four in the latest over and he is 23 not out, with Sibley on 17.
Somerset 41-4 v Hampshire
Kyle Abbott is having a morning. He has 3-5 and a run-out in four overs. Sean Dickson has to go for 21 from 27 balls after Abbott beats him for pace and angles one in which was heading for the top of leg stump.
James Rew joins Andy Umeed. He made 123 not out last time out, how the hosts could do with another big score from the promising youngster.
Middlesex v Northants 34-1
Emilio Gay is biding his time here, with just seven runs to his name in the first hour of play.
Helm tries to tempt the opener outside off stump and Gay leaves.
Glamorgan v Leicestershire - start delayed
Better news from Sophia Gardens.
An early lunch is going to be taken at 12:30 with a view to the game getting under way 40 minutes later.
Here's the state of play away from the Riverside...
Sussex have a solid start against Derbyshire at Hove, where the hosts are 55-1 with Tom Haines on 30 not out.
Still no play at Cardiff where the Glamorgan-Leicestershire game is delayed.
Yorkshire openers Adam Lyth and Fin Bean have put on an unbroken stand of 53 against Worcestershire at New Road.
Kent 26-2 v Warwickshire
Joe Denly doesn't linger. He has a swing at one which us angled into his pads by Henry Brookes, five balls into his first over, and misses the ball. Up goes the finger.
Did Denly think there was an inside edge? It matters not. A tricky summer for the former England man in red-ball cricket continues.
Harry Finch is the new batter with Kent in a spot of bother, having won the toss on a lovely day.
Durham v Glos 41-1
Durham debutant Prestorius is in the attack now.
Dent drives a slightly overpitched ball for two runs into the off side.
Steady rebuild for Gloucester after the early loss of Charlesworth.
Somerset 41-3 v Hampshire
Oh dear. Poor George Bartlett. Straight drive from Sean Dickson, Kyle Abbott throws his big paw at the bouncing ball, his finger deflects the ball onto the stumps of Bartlett who is run-out, backing-up, without scoring. The worst way to go in cricket?
Andrew Umeed joins Dickson who looks good for his 21...
Middlesex v Northants 33-1
Justin Broad (no relation to Stuart) is off the mark with a couple of runs nudged behind square leg off Tom Helm.
Good pace and carry on this pitch - where Simpson is taking the ball at shoulder height.
Five slips in place now as Broad is beaten outside off stump.
Surrey 28-1 v Notts
Surrey clearly think this is a pitch suited to seam bowling as they have named five in their team.
The Division leaders are certainly having to dig in at the moment with very few easy runs on offer from a strong Notts attack.
Twelve overs have been bowled - the latest a Dane Paterson maiden - and Tom Latham is 13 not out, with Dom Sibley on 12
Kent 21-1 v Warwickshire
It's fair to say Ben Compton has not looked too comfortable against Chris Rushworth and Division One's leading wicket-taker has another to add to his tally - that's now 38.
Compton comes forward late with a straight bat and edges behind to Michael Burgess who takes a routine catch.
Joe Denly joins Tawanda Muyeye and gets an inside edge cross his stumps from the first ball. Pressure on Kent already.
Northants 30-1 v Middlesex
Vasconcelos has found some touch and timing here, after a lean spell in the last few Championship rounds.
He moves to 24 with a four clipped to square leg off Ryan Higgins, replacing Roland-Jones.
Gone this time! Vasco is forward to defend and gets a wafer thin edge through to John Simpson.
He had to play it. Good ball, full and a hint of away movement.
Time for Justin Broad to face his first ball for Northants in first class cricket.
Somerset 36-2 v Hampshire
Another for Hampshire and another for Kyle Abbott. Somerset skipper Tom Abell looks like he was trying to clip that into the leg side but perhaps a tiny change of pace has done him and he's popped the ball back up the track for Abbott to take a neat catch to his right. He enjoyed that one.
George Bartlett is the next to fist-bump Sean Dickson, who has 16 at better than a run a ball. Who'd have guessed these two sides have T20 Finals Day to look forward to on Saturday?!
Glos 33-1 v Durham
Shot! Potts bowls a very full length and strays to leg, allowing Dent to pick the bowler away through mid-wicket for four.
The next ball is edged short of Lees in the slips. Single.
Potts is drilled through long off for four more by Price.
Glamorgan v Leicestershire
A very early decision taken by the umpires at Sophia Gardens that no play will be possible before lunch.
Skipper David Lloyd and Australian pace bowler Michael Neser will be back in the Glamorgan side as and when there is any action.
