  1. Signing offpublished at 18:50 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

Another good day for Division One leaders Surrey as Jordan Clark's century has put them in a good position against injury-hit Notts.

Kent and Northamptonshire failed to register a first-innings batting point as they were bowled out on the opening day by Warwickshire and Middlesex respectively.

Spinner Matty Parkinson took three wickets for Division Two pace-setters Durham against Gloucestershire, but four of the other games were also affected by rain to a greater or lesser degree.

Let's hope for better luck with the weather on day two. We'll be back with you for full coverage from 10:30.

  3. Close of play at Canterburypublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Kent 171 v Warwickshire 155-2

    Warwickshire's day. Emphatically so.

Oliver Hannon-Dalby claimed four wickets but Kent contributed to their own downfall, sliding to 78-7 with some poor shots and running between the wickets. Only a blistering wag of the tail saw them reach 171 with Grant Stewart clubbing a half-century and Matt Quinn smashing an eye-catching 25 too.

Alex Davies got an unlucky LBW decision to give Kent hope but Rob Yates (53) and Sam Hain (29) will return tomorrow looking to build a monster lead, trailing by just 16 with eight wickets in hand.

  4. Close of playpublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Middlesex 23-0 v Northants 219

Middlesex are making hay in this mini session of play.

Stoneman pushes another single past short leg.

Another leg side ball but Bamber misses and McManus picks it up from behind the stumps.

A much better line for the rest of the over - and that's stumps.

Middlesex will be much the happier of the two sides with a quickfire 23 in five overs and all ten wickets in hand.

Early wickets needed for Northants tomorrow.

  5. Close of play at Tauntonpublished at 18:38 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Somerset 196-5 v Hampshire

A see-saw day of Championship cricket punctuated by several rain delays... just another July day in England.

Hampshire - well, Kyle Abbott if we're honest - made an incredible start, reducing the hosts to 41-4 and 80-5 with Abbott taking four scalps and picking up a run-out.

He should have had five but James Vince shelled a routine chance to oust Kasey Aldridge on eight and he has made them pay, breezing to 55 and joining the imperious James Rew, who has 77 to pass 800 in Division One for the season, for a match-changing unbroken stand of 116 for the sixth wicket.

They'll look to build on that when play resumes in the morning.

  6. Close of play at Hovepublished at 18:37 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Sussex 376-7 v Derbyshire

Derbyshire won the toss, and it all went downhill from there.

Tom Clark and Tom Haines fell narrowly short of centuries, while there was also a half-century for Oli Carter and Fynn Hudson-Prentice reached stumps unbeaten on 52 at better than a run-a-ball.

Derbyshire have recovered slightly having allowed Sussex to reach 291-4 but the hosts will have their eyes on maximum batting bonus points and then taking some wickets on day two... weather permitting.

  7. Postpublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Middlesex 22-0 v Northants 219

White is bowling an off stump line, back of a length with four slips and a short leg in place.

Stoneman gets a single off the first ball and Bamber slaps a short, wide ball through backward point for four runs.

    Northants are struggling here.

Four more driven square through point! Goodness me. This is almost a T20 innings.

  8. 50 runs

for Rob Yatespublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Kent 171 v Warwickshire 137-2

Yates clips spinner Hamid Qadri away to run three and bring up his half-century from 137 balls. A very patient and very useful contribution from the opener.

That's the 23-year-old's seventh first-class fifty - he has eight centuries. He'll be looking to add another tomorrow, I'm sure.

  9. Postpublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Middlesex 14-0 v Northants 219

The radar is still a little awry for Sanderson as both Bamber and Stoneman run a leg-bye each.

The last ball is outside off, seaming away and Bamber leaves it alone.

I must admit, this is the first time I've ever seen Bamber open a first class innings.

  10. 6 runs

Postpublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Sussex 376-7 v Derbyshire

Nope, not Fynn Hudson-Prentice... Ari Karvelas carts a pretty rank full-toss from Anuj Dal over the ropes at deep square for a maximum.

    One over to come tonight.

  11. Postpublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Middlesex 10-0 v Northants 219

Jack White will bowl from the Lake End.

Stoneman shoulders arms, leaving outside off. The third ball is leg side and Stoneman plays and misses.

Good take from a diving McManus.

Stoneman takes the strike again with a leg bye off the last ball.

  12. Postpublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Middlesex 9-0 v Northants 219

Four slips in for Sanderson and the first ball is short and cut away in front of square for four.

The fourth ball flies off Stoneman's pad and down to fine leg for four leg-byes.

Stoneman keeps the strike with a single nudged to mid on.

  13. 50 runs

for Fynn Hudson-Prenticepublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Sussex 364-7 v Derbyshire

Nine fours and a six in a 46-ball half-century for Fynn Hudson-Prentice. Four of those fours came in consecutive deliveries to end the Sam Conners over, and were all around the wagon-wheel.

Just the 10th first-class fifty of his career. He has never scored a century... just going to leave that there...

Two overs and change left this evening.

  14. Close of play at The Ovalpublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Surrey 339-8 v Nottinghamshire

Division One leaders Surrey end a day which began with the second-ball dismissal of skipper Rory Burns in a strong position, thanks to Jordan Clark's 107 against Notts.

The visitors are without captain Steven Mullaney because of a side strain and seamers Jake Ball and Brett Hutton both had to leave the field with injuries.

Surrey were 130-5, but Clark added 77 with Ben Foakes (46) and 97 with Sean Abbott (48) to put them in sight of a third batting point.

Lyndon James claimed 4-74 for Notts, with wicketkeeper Tom Moores taking five catches.

  15. Middlesex batting at Merchant Taylors'published at 18:20 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Middlesex 0-0 v Northants 219

Here come Mark Stoneman - and night-watchman Ethan Bamber.

    Sanderson will bowl to Stoneman.

  16. A third batting bonus point for Sussexpublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Sussex 360-7 v Derbyshire

Fynn Hudson-Prentice smears Sam Conners through the covers for four to move to 40 and bring up the Sussex 350 in the 93rd over.

  17. Postpublished at 18:17 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Middlesex v Northants 219

Unsurprisingly, the visitors have asked for the light roller ahead of the Middlesex innings.

Conditions permitting, we have five overs left before stumps tonight.

Not a big total for Northants - but they'll get a big boost with an early wicket or two here.

  18. wicket

WICKET Sanderson run out (Helm) 4published at 18:14 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Middlesex v Northants 219

It looks like Northants will fall just short of a batting point in this innings now.

And that's it! Calamitous run out as White drives to mid off and runs to the other end while Sanderson barely moves.

Return throw comes in to Simpson from Helm.

An uncomfortable mini session awaits the Middlesex openers.

  19. wicket

WICKET Zaib b Helm 49published at 18:11 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Middlesex v Northants 215-9

Bowled him! Full, seaming in and beating the attempted drive.

    Superb delivery from Bamber.

Frustration for Zaib but that may well be a crucial innings in the context of the match.

Last man Jack White is in.

  20. wicket

WICKET McAndrew b Lakmal 14published at 18:08 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Sussex 338-7 v Derbyshire

    Off-stump cartwheeling alert.

Suranga Lakmal strikes with the new ball, beating Nathan McAndrew for pace and the Derbyshire fightback continues. That's a second for the Sri Lankan.
