    Middlesex 277 v Northants 219 & 265-3 - lead by 207

Lovely shot from Sam Whiteman as the Aussie left-hander sweeps off spinner De Caires through square leg for four. That's the 200 lead.

A single off the fifth ball and Gay unleashes a beautiful lofted drive over the sight screen for six.

    Er...new ball, please?

    Yorkshire 407, Worcestershire 220-9

Worcestershire now need only a further 38 to avoid the follow-on - and Yorkshire take the new ball in an effort to dislodge this troubleosme pair.

Adam Finch (22) and Ben Gibbon (21) have so far added 41 in 26 overs.

Matthew Fisher gets first use of the new Kookaburra.

You don't see a five all that often in cricket, but there's one for Matt Critchley in Will Williams' latest over.

Dan Lawrence is then down the track and hits the Lancashire paceman for six as the Essex lead goes beyond 255.

Bazball fans would have loved that one.

    Somerset 500 v Hampshire 325-8

Big appeal for LBW from Shoaib Bashir against Felix Organ but nothing doing. More in hope and desperation than expectation?

Organ has 93, Kyle ABbott 88.

    Surrey 355 & 133-1 v Notts 399

    Lucky, lucky, Dom Sibley.

He goes back to cut a ball from Calvin Harrison which keeps low and an underedge goes through the legs of keeper Tom Moores and runs away for four.

Sibley is 68 not out and Surrey lead by 89.

    Kent 171 & 266-6 v Warwickshire 549-7 dec

Joey Evison produced a fine rearguard effort before falling for 99 in the dying embers of Kent's defeat at Edgbaston in April.

He is attempting to frustrate the Bears again, albeit on the third evening this time.

Evison guides Chris Rushworth through the covers nicely for his second four to move to 31.

Kent still need another 112 to avoid an innings defeat, however.

    Middlesex 277 v Northants 219 & 254-3 - lead by 196

Big LBW shout for off spinner De Caires against Whiteman but it's not out and Middlesex frustration continues.

    Maiden over.

Toby-Roland Jones bowls a short ball which Gay tries to hook, then half aborts the shot and pats the ball down safely to mid-wicket. A good roll of the wrists to keep the ball down.

He ducks under a bouncer to see out the over. 21 remaining tonight.

  8. Postpublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Somerset 500 v Hampshire 318-8

Kyle Abbott wears 87 and has matched his shirt number in runs. Felix Organ wears three but also has 87. Clearly shirt numbers means nothing.

Hampshire just 32 runs away from the follow-on target - not that I expect Somerset will fancy another long stint in the field after 96 overs anyway.

    Durham 453 v Glos 316 & 164-8 - lead by 27

Raine bowls round the wicket and Hammond flicks the bowler away on the leg side by Hammond for a single.

Still 27 overs left tonight if conditions allow so we may yet get a result if Durham can knock over the last two wickets in the next hour or so.

    Middlesex 277 v Northants 219 & 254-3 - lead by 196

De Caires is in the attack replacing Higgins and his fourth ball is swiped away to leg by the left-handed Whiteman for two, as the left hander moves outside the line of off stump.

    That's the Northants 250 in 92.4 overs.

Toby Roland-Jones continues from the Benham End and Emilio Gay fends off a bumper into the off side.

The third ball is swivel-pulled in front of square for four runs.

Good news for England as Dan Lawrence steers Jack Blatherwick away for a single and posts a 71-ball half-century.

Like Surrey's Dom Sibley a few minutes ago, he has also gone past 500 Championship runs for the season in this innings.

Zaman Akhter is the new batter.

Successive boundaries for Matt Taylor, who drives through cover and then dabs through to third man.

The two slips can only stand and watch.

Who predicted this when Gloucestershire were 98-7?

    Somerset 500 v Hampshire 304-8

Felix Organ and Kyle Abbott have put on 150 for this ninth wicket, and counting.

Organ brings up a second batting point with a maximum off Shoaib Bashir to join Abbott on 78.

The South African doesn't like that and a couple of balls later slaps Alfie Ogborne for his 14th four to re-take the lead in the scoring stakes.

Tom Bailey bangs one in at the start of a new over and Dan Lawrence hoists it away for six to bring up a 50 partnership with Matt Critchley.

After Critchley drives Bailey for four, a Lawrence single ends the over and he is just one run short of his own 50.

Emilio Gay picks up two fours off Ryan Higgins, lofting the bowler over Toby Roland-Jones at mid on and pulling a short one through square leg five balls later.

How many can Middlesex chase? Could be well north of 200 at this rate.

Shot! A full and wide ball from Potts and Taylor slaps it through point for four.

That's a fine partnership in adversity for Gloucestershire, worth 50 in 70 balls.

Taylor drives through cover for two to take the visitors to 150 in the 48th.

An big LBW shout is turned down at the end of the over. Close but just missing leg.
