Rob Yates was invited to bowl the last over yesterday, and as he was about to start it a voice in the outfield shouted “make it your day, Rob!”

As he’d finished an innings of 228 not out only an hour earlier, it might already have been considered his day even though the over brought no joy. But the golden arm’s dividend was merely delayed until this afternoon.

Lunchtime showers cleared to allow Harry Finch and Jack Leaning to build a partnership of 100. Leaning’s scoring rate was quicker than might have been expected in these circumstances, but he was playing largely without risk and placing balls into gaps.

Yates reappeared with two legside catchers, and to his anguish Leaning, aiming between them, glanced the ball onto his thigh and into the hands of Jacob Bethell at short leg. Yates’s second Championship wicket of the season arrived 15 minutes later, Jordan Cox lbw sweeping at a ball that seemed to be pushed through a little quicker.

Moseley Cricket Club had an unlucky day yesterday, when they should have staged a Central Sparks game for the first time. It was rained off. The silver lining is that it may have given them a chance to tune in and see one of their own play a probably match-winning hand for the county, with the bat and now with the ball.

Higgins only drops a tad short and Whiteman picks it up quickly, pulling the ball in front of square for four.

    That takes Northants past 200.

A single off the fifth ball and the lead is 146. Whiteman has 86.

Final session under way the The Oval.

Brett Hutton has the ball, Dom Sibley is on strike.

A good session here for Notts and the Division One leaders could be under a bit of pressure.

50 for Miles Hammondpublished at 16:25 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Durham 453 v Glos 316 & 108-7 - trail by 29

Miles Hammond has stood on the burning deck and reached his 50 with a well timed flick to mid-wicket for 50 off 82 balls with six fours.

  6. Postpublished at 16:20 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Middlesex 277 v Northants 219 & 200-2 - lead by 142

Higgins is bowling with enough width outside off for the batter to leave.

The fourth delivery is a no ball and the last legit ball is driven through cover for three.

Helm takes the new ball at the other end and Whiteman is hurried by extra pace and bounce as he jabs the ball down to backward point for one. That's the Northants 200 in 81.1 overs.

  7. Tea at Blackpoolpublished at 16:17 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Lancs 145 v Essex 282 & 42-3

Who knows which way this one could go if we get four uninterrupted sessions to complete the match?

Lancashire slumped from 114-4 to 145 all out in the space of nine overs as they conceded a first-innings deficit of 137.

Essex, though, haven't found batting any easier, losing both openers for ducks and skipper Tom Westley for five.

They are, though, 179 ahead now and in a strong position.

    Middlesex 277 v Northants 219 & 193-2 - lead by 135

The hosts need a breakthrough and take the new cherry straight away.

    Ryan Higgins will bowl.

Can he repeat some of yesterday's magic when he got two early wickets?

  9. Tea at Canterburypublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Kent 171 & 223-5 v Warwickshire 549-7 dec

Kent are 155 runs in arrears with five wickets in hand at tea on day three.

Harry Finch remains in the middle on 55 from 135 balls with Joey Evison on 13 from 34 at the other end, however the amount of spin we've see at Canterbury means the new ball is only seven over away and Chris Rushworth and Oliver Hannon-Dalby in particular will fancy using the 21 overs they potentially have with it tonight to earn their side an innings win and a day off tomorrow.

    Sussex 402 & 53-3 v Derbyshire 407

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex

Terrific session for the visitors who added 66 runs to take a first innings lead of five and then added three quick Sussex wickets

Alex Thomson claimed two of the wickets to fall, the off-spinner opening the bowling and accounting for Tom Haines and skipper Tom Alsop.

Thomson earlier contributed a valuable 44 with the bat as the Derbyshire tail wagged to add 100 for their last three wickets

    Lancs 145 v Essex 282 & 40-3

Will Williams was a bit of an unknown quantity for many English cricket followers when he was signed by Lancashire.

But he has certainly been a quality acquisition for the Red Rose and he has figures of 2-7 from seven overs in this new ball spell.

  12. wicket

WICKET Shaw c Clark b Carse 2published at 16:10 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Durham 453 v Glos 316 & 98-7

    Out!

Carse bangs the ball halfway down the pitch and Shaw taps the ball straight to Graham Clark at short leg.

The end may be nigh. Gloucester are still 39 adrift.

    Matt Taylor is in next.

  13. 50 runs

50 for Luke Procterpublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Middlesex 277 v northants 219 & 177-2 - lead by 119

Play has resumed here with only four overs lost in the day's play.

Whiteman and Procter are getting the visitors into a strong position after Emilio Gay retired hurt this morning.

They've put on 117 together - and Procter tucks De Caires away to leg for one to reach 50 off 135 balls with two fours.

  14. Tea at The Ovalpublished at 16:05 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Surrey 355 & 88-1 v Notts 399

So far, so good for Surrey, who head in to tea 44 ahead following the loss of skipper Rory Burns for nought in the opening over of their second innings.

Notts are a bowler light as Jake Ball (abdominal strain) has been unable to add to his five overs in the first innings.

Dom Sibley is 44 not out and Tom Latham has 35 and there are 40 overs to be bowled in the final session of play.

  15. Tea at Tauntonpublished at 16:05 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Somerset 500 v Hampshire 258-8

An unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 105 between Felix Organ and Kyle Abbott has delayed the seemingly inevitable.

Hampshire reach tea just 92 runs shy of the follow-on target - though whether Somerset would enforce it anyway now, is up for question.

Organ has 58, two more than Abbott.

Shaw is off the mark with a back foot drive down the ground off the last ball of Parkinson's over.

Carse will bowl from the other end.

He works up a good pace and Shaw ducks under a bumper. Maiden over.

  17. 100 runs

partnership for Hampshirepublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Somerset 500 v Hampshire 255-8

There have been some late stands in this match, my goodness.

Kyle Abbott cracks Alfie Ogborne to the long-off fence with a textbook drive and brings up the 100 for the ninth wicket from 146 balls.

Abbott has 56 in almost exactly half the time Felix Organ has taken to amass the same score.

  18. Evening session begins at Chester-le-Streetpublished at 15:59 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Durham 453 v Glos 316 & 93-6

Well... Can Gloucestershire hang on here?

They're still a long way back, 44 in arrears, with 46.4 overs left (weather permitting) tonight.

Zafar got out to the second ball of the over just before the break so leggie Parkinson has four balls left to bowl.

Josh Shaw is the new batter and he's on strike.

WICKET Westley c Salt b Williams 5published at 15:56 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

    Lancs 145 v Essex 282 & 27-3

135 in the Essex first innings - 130 fewer in the second.

Tom Westley departs, caught behind off an absolutely beauty from Will Williams, and Matt Critchley is in at five.

    That's how you bowl a leg-cutter.

  20. Postpublished at 15:56 British Summer Time 12 July 2023

Just a single from the first five balls of Calvin Harrison's over, but Tom Latham then produces a reverse sweep and it brings him a boundary. Surrey now 34 in front.
