He cleared the fence two balls later and next over smeared Leaning for two sixes into the Hayes Close End.

    Essex 408-7 v Kent 207

Essex are having a charge - perhaps to declare very shortly.

Matt Critchley hoists Jack Leaning high over midwicket but then holes out to long-on.

A fine innings to put Essex in a winning position.

for Max Holdenpublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Middlesex 156-4 v Surrey 438

This fifth-wicket stand continues to frustrate Surrey,

Max Holden gets to a half-century in 93 balls by uppercutting Sean Abbott very sweetly over backward point down to the Mound Stand.

Rain and bad light has curtailed day one early at Cheltenham College.

Glamorgan will want to build on a fine platform tomorrow.

Postpublished at 17:35 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Notts 100 v Hants 166 & 245-5

Ahahaha, what a way to get off the mark.

James Fuller belts his first ball over mid-off for six, and I think it's fair to say that Hampshire are going to step on the accelerator now.

    The lead moves to 311.

  12. 350 up for Essexpublished at 17:31 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Essex 359-6 v Kent 207

Essex have taken complete control of this game after tea.

Simon Harmer has struck seven boundaries in getting to 39.

Matt Critchley is up to 81 at the other end and the lead is 152.

16 overs left and Kent, who did well in the first half of the day to stay in the game, are now sliding out of it.

  13. wicket

WICKET Dawson c Harrison b Pettman 82published at 17:31 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Notts 100 v Hants 166 & 239-5

Liam Dawson has batted beautifully, but has to go.

He charges at Toby Pettman, loses his shape and nicks through to slip.

  14. Postpublished at 17:22 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Middlesex 123-4 v Surrey 438

Finally a partnership for Middlesex with Max Holden, 30, getting together with John Simpson, 33, after tea.

They've shared 20 overs together and Surrey are searching for a breakthrough again at Lord's.

But the visitors remain in complete control with a huge lead.

  15. 'Holland having big influence'published at 17:18 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Notts 100 v Hampshire 166 & 226-4

    Kevan James
Former Middlesex & Hampshire cricketer on BBC Radio Solent

Ian Holland is having a big influence on Hampshire's position in this game.

His four wicket burst last night helped keep Notts in check and ultimately paved the way for Mohammad Abbas and Kyle Abbott to mop up this morning.

Now he’s playing a major part with the bat with an unbeaten 81.

The 32 year old lost his place as an opener at the start of the season as Hampshire persevered with Felix Organ from last summer and brought in young Fletcha Middleton.

Holland did keep his pace but was dropped down the order batting at anything between numbers seven and nine.

He was dropped altogether for the last three matches.

But as Hampshire's opening batting woes continued, he’s been given another chance.

A five ball duck in the first innings had many muttering to themselves ‘here we go again’.

But the USA international has worked hard second time around and perhaps those same people had forgotten his battling qualities which is just what his side need in this game on a pitch which hasn’t been your typical Trent Bridge surface.

  16. Division Two latestpublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

Durham's David Bedingham has joined his batting partner Alex Lees in going to three figures. Durham are now 233-2 at Derbyshire and 210 behind. Those two have put on 225 for the third wicket.

Returning England paceman Josh Tongue has just picked up two wickets in an over for Worcestershire against Leicestershire. The Foxes are in all sorts of trouble on 53-5 chasing 238 to win at Oakham School.

Yorkshire have just lost a second wicket against Sussex but they're still in control at Headingley. Ari Karvelas got Ryan Rickelton for 46 to leave them 178-2 and trailing by just 38.

Rain and bad light is still holding things up at Cheltenham with Glamorgan on 152-2 against Gloucestershire.

  17. wicket

WICKET Hain c Salt b Balderson 15published at 17:07 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Warks 82-3 v Lancs 327

George Balderson is having some day out!

He brought up his maiden first-class hundred earlier today, and now he removes the dangerous Sam Hain with the ball in his hand.

It's an innocuous tickle down the leg-side into the gloves of Phil Salt, but they all count, and Hain trudges off.

  18. 6 runs

Postpublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Notts 100 v Hants 166 & 213-4

    When it's not your day...

Liam Dawson nicks a full away-swinger from Dane Paterson, but it's shelled in the cordon.

Dawson puts the next delivery away for four to take Hampshire past 200, before pulling the final two balls of the over away for four, and then six over square leg.

  19. 100 runs

for Alex Leespublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Derbyshire 443 v Durham 202-2

Durham opener Alex Lees goes to his fourth century of an excellent campaign. He's also become the first batter to go past 1,000 County Championship runs for the season in this innings.

His stand with David Bedingham (89 not out) continues to grow - 194 and counting.

Great fightback from the Division Two leaders.

  20. wicket

WICKET Zaib c Lammonby b Overton 19published at 16:53 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Northants 180 & 66-4 v Somerset 351

    A soft dismissal.

Saif Zaib fiddles at a short, wide delivery from Craig Overton, gets a thick outside edge, and Tom Lammonby takes the catch at the second attempt after palming it up in the air.
