  1. Aus 130-2published at 34 overs

This is turning into a fascinating little battle. Steve Smith has come out determined to be aggressive and take the game to England, while Stuart Broad is searching for one of his magic spells.

Smith the latest player to adopt Bazball?

  2. Not outpublished at 33 overs

If the umpire heard a noise it was not the bat. There was a huge gap as the ball whizzed past through to the wicketkeeper.

    Steve Smith survives.

He reviewed it straight away, he didn't even ask Marnus Labuschagne.

  4. Australia reviewpublished at 33.3 overs

Have England snared Steve Smith's edge here?

Jonny Bairstow is convinced and the umpire agrees - but Steve Smith reviews straight away.

There seems to be a lot of Australians in the ground today. A few shouts of “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie…” follow those Steve Smith boundaries from below the media centre.

  6. Eng 129-2published at 33.2 overs

Utterly dismissive from Steve Smith as he clatters Stuart Broad's first two deliveries away through the covers for four.

    Smith is 24 off 15.

And here is Stuart Broad, ending Josh Tongue's impressive spell.

It's the first time an England bowler has bowled out Australia's openers since 1968. There's only been one other instance in the last 90 years, that was in January 1959. The last time it happened at Lord's was the first Test ever played here in 1884.

Stuart Broad is warming up. He dismissed both Smith and Labuschagne in Birmingham last week.

  10. Aus 121-2published at 33 overs

There's ohhs and ahhs from the Lord's crowd as Steve Smith very nearly chops on, with the ball smacking into his pads instead.

The leg side continues to be his friend thought as he repeatedly shuffles across his stumps and pushes the singles and twos.

Ollie Robinson ends his over with a horrible ball down the leg side that runs away for four byes.

This was an absolute beauty from Josh Tongue to bowl David Warner.

  12. Aus 113-2published at 32 overs

Good response from Josh Tongue, who again teases Marnus Labuschagne with that line outside his off stump and very nearly finds his outside edge.

I reckon in these seven balls, we've seen a different Smith to what we did at Edgbaston. He's certainly bough a different mindset to Edgbaston, where he looked out of sorts.

You can't bowl to Steve Smith with that field, you are basically saying to him that the whole leg side is available to him.

A potential problem for England is Steve Smith. Based on CricViz's captaincy grid, all five of England's pace options are only yellow options at bowling to him, meaning England are lacking a very good option for Smith, based on their data.

  15. Aus 110-3published at 31.4 overs

Shot. It's short from Josh Tongue and Steve Smith gobbles up the invitation, pulling the ball away for four.

Smith looks in the mood, which is ominous for England.

Meanwhile, Ollie Pope has still not come back out onto the field after injuring his shoulder in this incident earlier.

Tongue bowling at a decent lick here.

    From Joel in London

I think that is the first time I've ever seen a bowler *break* a stump before!!

Waiting for the pun "Tongue is making the ball talk!"

Josh Tongue has bowled out both of Australian's openers, the last England bowler to do that was Jon Snow in 1968 at Headingley. He got out Bob Cowper and John Inverarity that day.

  19. Aus 106-2published at 31 overs

Steve Smith's feet movement is something to behold. He skips right across his stumps to play a straightish ball through mid-wicket for two to bring up the Australia hundred, before another clip to fine leg brings a single.

That gives Ollie Robinson a chance to bowl to Marnus Labuschagne, who flails at a delivery outside off and the ball fizzes in the air, but there's no gully and it flies away for four.

Labuschagne does not look very comfortable out there at the moment.

  20. Eng 99-2published at 30 overs

The boos are replaced by cheers as Josh Tongue comes steaming in to Steve Smith, who drives his first ball down the ground and runs three.

There is a change at the other end as Ollie Robinson is brought in. A pre-arranged plan for Smith perhaps?
