  1. Aus 358-6published at 87 overs

'Ooohhh' echoes around Lord's as a thick inside edge from Mitchell Starc cannons into his stumps.

Starc actually does well to get on top of a delivery slightly back of a length to nudge a single, before Stuart Broad ends the over by beating the outside edge of Steve Smith's bat.

    Broad looks encouraged by that.

Stuart Mitchell: Good start from England. Need the rest this morning.

Nicholas Carvill: I’m hoping the Aussies do give us the same courtesy we gave them and declare for 393 in the first innings.

Simon Ashby: We could do with one of those Stuart Broad spells. I think 5-11 should do it.

Alex Carey began very positively against Stuart Broad - but it was the England man who had the last laugh.

  5. Aus 357-6published at 86 overs

    Smith 87, Starc 5

James Anderson looks to tempt Steve Smith with a couple of outswingers before going for the inswinger that Smith dabs into the leg side for a single.

There is some blue sky attempting to break through the dark clouds at Lord's, though England will probably want conditions to remain overcast for a little while yet.

The pitch might have just got a bit harder. It would probably be the best to bat on day two and day three and it was quite slow yesterday.

Stuart Broad was adamant that Carey was out. He forced Stokes into that review and was proved to be correct. A huge start to the morning for England.

If only Jofra Archer was fit... This team sorely misses him.

So many Doomsayers yesterday, it’s Cricket, anything can happen! Come on England!

Josh Tongue was the pick of the bowlers on day one for England, but his numbers were actually rather poor. He ranked the second worst on percentages for line, length, line and length and deliveries that were hitting the stumps. His average deliveries were almost 4mph faster than that of Broad and Anderson, which looks to be the key difference.

  9. Aus 355-6published at 85 overs

Mitchell Starc is the new batter and he whips his first ball away through the on side for four.

James Anderson gamely chases the ball all the way to the rope and ends up in a heap. Anderson gingerly gets to his feet and looks to be okay.

A statement of intent from Starc. This could be an entertaining few hours.

A good review by Ben Stokes because people were looking around not knowing what was going on. Stokes decided to go for it and that was the impetus England needed.

I actually thought that was too high. That's the luck England needed.

    Carey lbw b Broad 22 (Aus 351-6)

Gone! It was going on to clip the top of leg stump. The straighter line and wobble seam from Stuart Broad did for Alex Carey there.

    The perfect start for England.

  13. England reviewpublished at 84.5 overs

The celeb-appeal from Stuart Broad as he gets one to jag back into Alex Carey and clip his back leg!

The appeal is turned down but England send it upstairs.

  14. Aus 351-5published at 84.2 overs

Not the best start by Stuart Broad. He goes around the wicket to Alex Carey but his first two deliveries are way down leg and Carey can flick it away fine for back-to-back boundaries.

Craig: Hoping for a better day, England just look undercooked, it’s the first time yesterday under Ben Stokes that the game was allowed to meander along, waiting for things to happen rather than trying to make them happen. Ashes pressure??

  16. Aus 343-5published at 84 overs

Three slips in place for James Anderson as Steve Smith does his characteristic trot across his stumps before clipping the ball to fine leg for the first run of the day.

Anderson goes around the wicket to left-hander Carey, looking to tempt him into the drive with a fuller delivery. A fumble in the covers brings him a single with the last ball of the over.

A sedate start to the day. Stuart Broad will open at the other end.

Robinson hat-trick in the first over, Australia all out for 350. Heard it here first!

Did you mean Anderson, Stefan? I assume so because he's bowling the first over...

James Anderson will open the bowling this morning. He just pats down some sawdust on the footmarks before having a chat with Ben Stokes as he walks back to his mark.

Steve Smith, 85 not out, is on strike.

    Here we go...

Ravi: If England need to win day two to avoid going 2-0 down in the series as Michael Vaughan suggests, they will need to bowl Australia out for about 400 and be 250-2 at stumps.

John Petrie: Stokes has said that he will always try to win a match and take the risk of losing it rather than playing safe. Perhaps this is the match that Stokes decides England cannot afford to lose, if it is to have a chance of winning the Ashes.
