Just the one wicket fell in the session. Zak Crawley, having played fluently and looked in control, came charging down the pitch to Nathan Lyon.
The ball turned down the leg side and he was stumped two runs short of his half-century...

Don’t say it, don’t say it…..England are doing pretty well here

This is England's fightback and they needed to do this, but there's still a long way to go.

Nathan Lyon fires in the last ball of the session, it rushes Ollie Pope a touch but he is still able to defend solidly enough on the back-foot.
England could scarcely have asked for a better session. They've lost just the one wicket wicket - Zak Crawley will be frustrated to have given it away after batting so well.
There is plenty of work still to do if they are to overhaul Australia's 416 but it's a good start from Ben Stokes' side.

The fifty partnership has come up in just 11.2 overs.
Too straight from Nathan Lyon and Ben Duckett tickles it away fine.
Four more and that brings up the fifty partnership.
Four balls left in the session.
Pope 32, Duckett 57
Not quite the boundary-fest we saw in his last over but it is another expensive one from Mitchell Starc.
10 from it and he's gone for 55 from seven overs.
Time for one more over before tea.
The left-handed Ben Duckett has been strong the covers and mid-wicket, with more than half of his runs so far being scored through those areas.

It's an eighth 50-plus score in Test cricket for Ben Duckett in just 15 innings since earning a recall to the Test team. He's left just eight balls from over 830 balls in that time.
Eng 135-1
Ben Duckett brings up his sixth Test fifty with a lovely flick off his pads for four.
After a couple of low scores at Edgbaston, the England opener will be very happy with that.
Five boundaries and no leaves as he reaches his half-century from 84 balls.
Lovely applause and a standing ovation from many as Sir Andrew Strauss makes his way around the boundary on Red for Ruth Day at Lord's.

Careful, Ben! The England left-hander is down the track to the last ball of the Nathan Lyon over.
The off-spinner tries to do what he did to Zak Crawley and fire it leg side. Duckett is able to get bat on it, though.
A prod to backward square leg for no run. Risky stuff.

Starc's last two overs have seen England score 28 runs.

That's probably not what a captain wants, consecutive boundaries either side of the wicket. As soon as someone hits both sides it makes it tougher.

One lucky boundary for Ollie Pope but he follows it up with two brilliant shots!
The first of them is whipped through mid-wicket and the next is a dreamy drive through the covers for four more.
Mitchell Starc comes back with a very well-directed yorker that Pope just gets his bat to in the nick of time.
The ball flies off the edge and just past the slips for two more. A very eventful over!

We've had three or four of them this innings, a few in this Test match but none have chopped onto the stumps. We saw a few chop on at Edgbaston.
Pope 20, Duckett 48
Streaky - but it's four!
The umpteenth inside edge in this match comes from Ollie Pope. This might be the closest we've seen to one being chopped on.
Mitchell Starc can't believe it missed leg stump.
Having talked up Pat Cummins after his previous over, he promptly takes himself out of the attack after a short, sharp three-over burst.
Mitchell Starc will replace him. Expect more yorkers...
