  1. Eng 46-4published at 13 overs

Australia need six wickets to win

With England in the mire, out walks Ben Stokes and he gets off the mark first ball with a single to point.

He's been the man for the big occasion plenty of times but even he will struggle to rescue them here.

It's another absolute seed. This is an over to watch from Pat Cummins.

Absolutely castled. What an over from Cummins. That was another wonderful delivery from the Australia captain.

    Brook b Cummins 4 (Eng 45-4)

Off stumped pegged back - Pat Cummins has two in the over and England are crumbling at Lord's!

It's another absolutely brilliant delivery that angles in and then does just enough to sneak past Harry Brook's bat and crash into the timbers.

This could be all over tonight.

England all out for under 100. Watch this space.

We've still got more than an hour and 20 minutes left in the day as Harry Brook comes out for England.

Australia can go a long way to wrapping this one up before stumps.

Root couldn't get his bat out of the way. That is a huge blow for England. A superb bit of bowling from Pat Cummins.

That is an absolute seed, don't underestimate that ball before. That would've hurt. That's a massive blow for England and a great wicket for Australia.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 12.2 overs

    Root c Warner b Cummins 18 (Eng 41-3)

Huge wicket for Australia! It's a one-two punch from Pat Cummins!

The Australia captain hit Joe Root with a vicious bouncer the previous ball and follows it up with another snorter.

It rears up at Root and that extra bounce means all Root can do it glove it to first slip, where David Warner takes the catch.

  11. Eng 41-2published at 12 overs

    Target 371

Good, aggressive running from Ben Duckett after flicking the ball down to fine leg and sprinting back for two.

How long until Australia go to the short stuff?

On a more positive note, I do think we have a good chance of winning at least one of the Test matches. So I don’t think it will be 5-0 to Australia.

Close! Josh Hazlewood draws Joe Root forward with a full delivery and it nips back a long way up the slope.

Close to the inside edge but, thankfully for Root and England, there is nothing on it.

England have steadied the ship, but these two basically need to still be there tonight. Australia have not really done the short ball yet. Whatever England do, Australia seem to do the opposite just to prove a point. That ball to Pope was an absolute Jaffa.

That's a good ball, just a bit of extra bounce there down the slope from Pat Cummins. That was a genuine play and miss from Ben Duckett.

  16. Eng 37-2published at 11 overs

Snorter from Pat Cummins! On a good length but it rears up and jags away to beat Ben Duckett.

The only good thing about it for England was it did so much that Duckett was never getting anywhere near it.

Two from the over, two singles as Duckett and Joe Root just keep the scoreboard ticking over.

I expected England to at least compete in this series. They have been outclassed in every department. Ashes will be gone yet again by tomorrow lunch time.

    John D, Kent

Australia going 2-0 up does look the likely outcome here. Not sure England were outclassed at Edgbaston, though.

  18. Eng 35-2published at 10 overs

    Target 371

A no-ball from Josh Hazlewood gives England a bonus run before Joe Root punches smartly through the covers for two.

It looks like Pat Cummins is coming back on to replace Mitchell Starc at the Pavilion End.

  19. How's stat?!published at 17:26 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

Of all players in Test cricket history, Joe Root ranks sixth for most fourth innings runs scored. Of the top 25 players on that list, Root is the only one who still currently plays Test cricket.

  20. Eng 32-2published at 9.1 overs

    Target 371

Four runs to Joe Root. Angled down to deep third, wide of Steve Smith at second slip.

It looked slightly edgy but bounced well short of the cordon and replays show it was deliberately played, opening the face a touch.
