Maybe if Cameron Green was fielding that catch for Anderson, he would've got there. He's that much longer.

This tactic here is working. I have no problem with the odd intimidating short ball.

  2. Aus 197-4published at 67 overs

Travis Head is riding his luck.

He pulls Josh Tongue behind square for four but then miscues a cut shot, just wide of the diving Jimmy Anderson at gully.

    Close!

Getting the feeling that the short ball might not be as easy to play as some pundits had been suggesting.

The main difference between this and bodyline is the amount of protection they have now compared to back then when they didn't have any.

The theory being adopted here by England was similar to Australia. Lord's probably hasn't quite seen this barrage before.

  5. Aus 192-4published at 66 overs

Maiden over from Stuart Broad as Cameron Green continues to resist the urge to take on the short ball.

Australia are trying to take the sting out of this after a tricky few minutes.

The control you need to consistently control the short ball is not easy. All of the criticism we've given both sides, it's so much easier being sat here than having a ball coming towards your head.

If, like me, you're scratching your head and wondering why batters on both teams are getting out this way, then there are a few ideas. The pitch is quite two paced, which means it's hard to trust the bounce of the short stuff. Also, if you're a batter, there are only so many occasions you can get out of the way before you want to hit back. It's like being a boxer - you can duck and weave, but at some point you'll have the urge to throw a punch.

    Brutal delivery from Josh Tongue!

The bouncer rears up at Travis Head, who ends up arching his back as he tries to jump clear of it.

It pops up but just out of reach of Joe Root at short leg but replays show there was no bat or glove involved anyway.

Regardless, Head is not having a very nice time out there so far!

This is the 88th Test that Steve Smith and David Warner have played together, Tongue has got both out in both innings. Only one bowler has done it before, Neil Wagner in 2019.

Clever from Jimmy Anderson there, get Steve Smith on strike and get the key wicket.

    Marcus, London

That's what you get with experience, Marcus.

Travis Head doesn't look comfortable at all against the short stuff from Stuart Broad and will be glad to get to the safety of the on-striker's end with a thick inside edge to square leg.

Cameron Green then ducks his way through the rest of the over.

Did you see Ben Stokes' reaction? Stokes walked in to celebrate it before the catch in disbelief. Short pitch bowling like this, when you are playing with a horizontal bat, your margin for error is so high.

A crazy over! Travis Head should have gone first ball but Steve Smith does England a favour and pops one up from the very next delivery.

Cameron Green, on a pair, is the new batter.

From considering when Australia might declare 10 minutes ago, England suddenly have two new batters to go at and a chance to fight their way back into contention.

    Smith c Crawley b Tongue 34 (Aus 190-4)

Steve Smith falls into the trap as well! He's given Zak Crawley catching practice!

England got a lot of stick for the way they played the short ball and now Australia are doing the same.

The bouncer from Josh Tongue didn't get up that high but Smith tried to help it from just outside off, no real intent in the shot and it balloons off the top-edge.

A simple catch for Crawley at deep backward square.

Head should have got a first baller there, he's got away with a single.

  19. dropped catch

Head dropped on 0published at 62.3 overs

Oh no! Travis Head should be gone first ball!

He flashes at one just wide of off, the ball goes quickly off the outside edge but straight to Jimmy Anderson at gully.

But the ball goes straight through his hands, bounces off his chest and goes to ground. Big miss!

It's obviously what England needed, they got what they need, they got the breakthrough. It's been a fairly sedate morning. I'm looking forward to see Travis Head bat, it should change the tempo.
