  1. Eng 28-2published at 9 overs

    Target 371

Something of a rarity in this over: a leave from Ben Duckett!

It was an extremely wide delivery from Mitchell Starc and Duckett wanted no part in it.

In Ollie Pope's defence, he got an absolute beauty from Mitchell Starc this time.

In Ollie Pope's 29 second innings, he has scored just one half century and averages 16. In the first innings he averages 47.7. Of all players to score 1500 Test runs or more, Pope has the highest discrepancy between first and second innings averages.

I don't think the nighthawk will be fancying this attack tonight. He may have to go and hide. There will be other attacks he will have rather faced.

  5. Eng 26-2published at 8 overs

    Target 371

Too straight from Josh Hazlewood to start and Joe Root is able to glance the ball down to fine leg for four.

There's a hint of width last ball of the over, Root tries to cut it but the ball stays low and scuttles through to Alex Carey.

Variable bounce isn't going to make this chase any easier for England.

  6. Postpublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 1 July 2023

An early bowling change for Australia as Josh Hazlewood comes on for Pat Cummins.

The skipper will likely take over from Mitchell Starc at the other end once his spell is done.

There’s a group of 20 or so watching from the balcony of one of the buildings across the road and above Tavern Stand. They’re flying an England flag.

How do I get an invite?

  8. Eng 22-2published at 7 overs

    Target 371

England are dealing in singles at the moment. After those two early wickets, they'll be happy enough doing that.

There is still plenty of swing for Mitchell Starc and Joe Root whips the ball off his middle stump, a well-timed but risky shot that brings no runs after a good stop by Pat Cummins at mid-wicket.

England look a long way off breaking this record as things stand.

  10. Eng 19-2published at 6 overs

    Target 371

Pat Cummins goes past Joe Root's outside edge but given the way the ball died in the surface after passing the stumps, I doubt it would have carried even if he had nicked it.

A on-drive, not timed by Ben Duckett, runs through mid-on to add two to the England total.

I just want these players to do well. Test cricket is hard, when you are dominating, don't give it away. Australia have it in them to bowl balls you can't play.

  13. Eng 16-2published at 5 overs

    Target 371

Joe Root gets off the mark first ball in typical Joe Root fashion, playing late and guiding the ball wide of gully for one.

A wide ball is thrashed out to deep cover by Ben Duckett before Root defends to cover for another single.

I can't take another day of this. Horrible, tense, attritional. But absolutely compelling.

I've just said to Jim Maxwell off air, Mitchell Starc is gliding in. It's a beauty, a bit of swing and seam, straight through Ollie Pope. The middle stump comes out of the ground.

That 371 is a long way off, even for this England side, they haven't been able to walk the walk. If England don't switch on, the game may not get finish tonight, but it will be done.

    Bowled 'im!

That is a beauty from Mitchell Starc! It's full, swinging and then seaming back towards the right-hander to knock back middle stump.

Ollie Pope was nowhere near it and England are in real trouble as Joe Root makes his way to the middle.

I suppose what Australia will do is try and take wickets and if a partnership is forming, go to the short stuff, that seems to be the theme of the day.

Ben Duckett is moving like someone who might have tweaked a hamstring after that quick single in Cummins’ over.

  19. Eng 13-1published at 4 overs

    Target 371

After driving firmly to mid-off for no run, Ollie Pope pinches a single from the last by defending towards cover.

It looked like it might have been tight as Pat Cummins sprinted to retrieve it but he couldn't collect it cleanly so it's an easy single.

I think it will be normal Test cricket for the first 10-15 overs or so.
