  2. 'I'm still lost for words'published at 19:07 British Summer Time 6 July 2023

Australia's Mitchell Marsh speaking to BBC Sport: "It was pretty amazing I'm still lost for words, very nice to be back and it was a long time coming. We knew Cameron Green had a niggle two days out and then I got the word. Unfortunate for Green but it was nice to contribute.

"In the past my nerves have really got the better of me and I've worked really hard to control them.

"I think it's the first time I've been dropped at Test cricket and you always need some luck, today was my day. I've worked really hard where I can mentally take on the game like that. Everyone talks about playing their natural game and that's what it was for me.

The environment that Pat Cummins has created and has made us all feel a great sense of freedom and I've never been part of a squad that has such a great mentality.

On Mark Wood's bowling: "Class. Brilliant to come back after injury, he is a very good bowler."

  3. 'To raise the ball at home was pretty special'published at 19:05 British Summer Time 6 July 2023

England's pace bowler Mark Wood speaking to BBC Sport: "My mum and dad saw it today so I'm delighted. The last few weeks have been difficult but it was an amazing feeling to get it at home, to get that off my back and raise the ball at home was pretty special.

"Stokes was very clear before the game wanting me to bowl short, sharp spells and I don't want to get ahead of myself but there's' more on the line and if I can bowl well in the second innings and bowl well and get a win on the board. Marsh made the wicket look different to everyone else.

"In training I would tend to bowl at 80% or 90%, I didn't want to give it my full in case I got injured, so it's just trying my best in training to feel good and it was zipping out my hand in the last few days so I knew I was ready and I'm just pleased to be able to perform.

On being the nighthawk: "I couldn't stop pacing up and down and couldn't stop talking. I was counting every ball."

  5. 'England put Bazball in the box'published at 19:02 British Summer Time 6 July 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

This is a fantastic cricket wicket, the game has been played in an expansive way. It's been a brilliant day's play but you have to be so on it because things are happening all the time.

I was pleased with Bairstow there, they put Bazball in the box and played safely. It's a great pitch for a batter and bowler, and that's why it's going to be a great contest.

However, to bowl Australia out for 263, England would have been happy having won the toss.

Ben Stokes made a deliberate point at Lord's of saying you want to bowl a team out for less than 300 having won the toss.

They went into their innings with 27 overs left in the day.

    Glenn McGrath
Ex-Australia bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Pat Cummins was going to have a bowl as well and it was probably a good toss to win and have a bowl. The ball did plenty all day and once you get in, the way Marsh did, was so well. If England took all their chances they would've been 120. Everyday is a highlight.

It could have been even better for England, though.

Jonny Bairstow dropped two catches - Steve Smith on four and Travis Head on nine.

Joe Root also didn't have his best day at slip, dropping Mitch Marsh on 12 and Alex Carey later on too.

Wood, who averaged 90.5mph across the day, wrapped up the trail.

He took four of the final six wickets to fall and showed what an asset he could be for England.

Here are three of those wickets.

However, he went in the final over before tea and then England - and particularly Mark Wood - ran through the tail.

Australia were 240-4 but lost their last six wickets for 23 runs to be bowled out for 263.

Chris Woakes, playing his first Test since March 2022, removed Marsh and Travis Head.

The afternoon session was completely different though.

Mitch Marsh, played his first Test since 2019, hit a sublime century to put Australia into the driving seat.

England also removed Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith before lunch to leave Australia 95-4.

Smith was convinced he didn't edge behind, but the technology showed a definite edge and he was sent on his way.

We then saw a brilliant spell of fast-pace bowling from Mark Wood.

He reached 96.5mph and every delivery in his first four-over spell was above 90mph.

The Durham man picked up the wicket of Usman Khawaja with a superb 95mph delivery.
