Oh, Ollie. You almost jinxed Zak Crawley there.

The England opener is squared up by Pat Cummins but the edge falls shot of Usman Khawaja in the gully.

The players are taking a drinks break with around 40 minutes left in the day's play.

Crawley is such a classy player. I am pleased the selectors have stuck with him, because he has much more promising raw materials than Stoneman, Burns, Sibley, or most of the more seasoned county openers who had a go.

Very good from Joe Root. He's standing in his crease and asking Pat Cummins: "Is the ball dead?"

  5. Eng 51-2published at 9 overs

Huge appeal from Scott Boland and Alex Carey as they think Joe Root strangles down the leg side.

Niton Menon says no and Root looks thoroughly unimpressed.

Australia debate the review but opt against it. Wisely too, it came off Root's trousers.

    Scott Boland is coming on.

    He replaces Mitchell Starc.

Pat Cummins has been expensive so far but he's picked up both wickets.

This is how he got rid of Harry Brook.

  8. Eng 43-2published at 8 overs

    Good over for England.

They take 13 off the bat off Pat Cummins, plus a no-ball.

I'm giving that shot of the day! What a stroke.

  10. Eng 39-2published at 7.3 overs

    Wow!

Pat Cummins drops a tiny bit shorter, and I mean a tiny bit, but a short-arm jab from Zak Crawley absolutely flies to the mid-wicket boundary.

Lovely stuff. The Western Terrace rise and signal four.

That has been placed so well by Joe Root. There's nothing more they like at Headingley than a Yorkshireman playing that shot.

  12. Eng 34-2published at 7.1 overs

    Roooooot.

The Yorkshireman gets high on his toes and punches for four through point.

    Superb shot.

Ex-Australia bowler on BBC Test Match Special

If England had held those two catches they would have bowled Australia out for 120 so it's a big difference.

  14. Eng 29-2published at 7 overs

Zak Crawley plays two cracking drives but only gets a single each time because of the Australia fielder on the point boundary.

Umpire Niton Menon has had a gentle word with Mitchell Starc twice about his follow through. It's not an official warning yet.

Mitchell Marsh looked at home whereas every other batsman has never really looked settled.

  17. Eng 24-2published at 6 overs

Zak Crawley is determined that England don't have a run out here.

He turns down a second despite Joe Root being keen, and then Root wants another drop-and-run single. but Crawley says no.

  18. Eng 23-2published at 5.4 overs

Joe Root is off the mark with a trademark drop and run into point.

  19. Postpublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 6 July 2023

Joe Root is in with England 22-2.

He must feel like he's back in 2021.

Wobble seam delivery from Cummins that did the trick.
