Three dropped catches and 16 extras already. These are the things that cost games. Wake up England.

    Look away now, Joe...

  3. Aus 108-4published at 30 overs

England are taking very different approaches to these two Australia batters.

For Travis Head, it's the short ball ploy but it's far more conventional to Mitchell Marsh, which you'd say suits Chris Woakes' bowling much better.

Still, he overpitches last ball and Marsh drives firmly back down the ground for four.

Mitchell Marsh smashed Chris Woakes for six at the start of the previous over. A very good hit but it should have been his last scoring shot...

That was the 13th chance that England have missed in this series in terms of catches and stumpings, plus two wickets off no-balls.

Australia have missed seven chances so far with one wicket off a no-ball.

  7. 100 runs

    Aus 102-4published at 29 overs

Some very good fielding on the boundary from Ben Stokes prevents a boundary but Travis Head's pull shot does bring two to take Australia to three figures.

A couple more singles from the over keep the scoring ticking over as England continue to stew on that dropped catch.

England giving Australia more chances to get back into this game through poor catching. Not good enough!

    A frustrated Ian in Cardiff.

  9. Aus 98-4published at 28 overs

It should have been a second wicket for Chris Woakes on his return.

Instead, Joe Root looks rather embarrassed to have shelled the chance at first slip.

England can't afford to keep giving lives to the Australia batters.

Joe Root is usually so good there. If you're going to win Ashes Tests you're going to have to take catches. Too many chances are going down. That was a regulation catch.

    Aus 98-4

Another catch goes down and that is a regulation chance at first slip!

It would have been a classic Chris Woakes wicket, drawing Mitchell Marsh forward, moving away late to find the edge and it goes at the perfect height to Joe Root.

He gets both hands to it but somehow it pops out. That is as straightforward as it gets in the slips.

Three dropped catches already for England.

That's a wonderful shot and Marsh is a strong player! He absolutely pulverised it.

    Aus 98-4published at 27.1 overs

Wow, no messing messing about from Mitchell Marsh.

Too short from Chris Woakes and the ball is pulled over deep mid-wicket for six! That went a long way!

Chris Woakes will get things started from the other end after lunch. He'll be hoping to add to his one wicket in the morning session.

Travis Head looks so uncertain against the short ball for a Test number five.

But this field from England puts away the full-length delivery.

  16. Aus 92-4published at 27 overs

After Mitchell Marsh nudges a single early in the over, England set the field for the short stuff to Travis Head.

It is no real surprise, the left-hander has not looked at all comfortable when the ball is banged in and that remains the case.

He tries to take on the last two deliveries in the over and gets in a bit of a tangle both times. Encouraging for England.

Thanks, Callum. A top stint taking out the Australia top four.

England have another six wickets to get. The players are back out, the floodlights are on and Stuart Broad will bowl the first over of the session.

Here's hoping it picks up where the morning left off.

Here's Sam Drury to hopefully run through the middle-order and get England into the tail.

  19. 'This approach is drawing in new fans'published at 13:39 British Summer Time 6 July 2023

England manager Gareth Southgate on TMS: "The first about Bazball is that people were telling me that we should be doing things the same way!

"We have looked at what their approach to things have been. I've certainly looked at the mindset shift. When we took over our team six or seven years ago, there was a lot of fear.

"We've tried to reduce that fear and now we've got a team that have far more belief going into games. But recognising individual strengths and trying to get people to play to what they're most comfortable with.

"This England team with people like Harry Brook, you don't want to restrict talent like that. People will criticise when they play a shot and get out but when you see them play as they do and can, when you see an innings like Ben Stokes' last weekend, it's drawing in a new generation of fans with the excitement it's bringing.

"We could quite possibly have lost those games playing another way.

"You try to find comparables and you have to assess these things over a longer period of time. You can build short-term confidence with wins but it has been interesting how quickly opinion has turned with these last two games.

"In the end, results define people's reactions. You might have adapt and adjust because you're learning all the time as a coach or a captain. I don't think it's as straightforward as complete freedom. There has to be some flexibility in how you play in any sport.

"But the initial shift to try and reduce fear and change people's mindsets was really important."

Think Bairstow's going to need to significantly contribute with the bat to take the edge off the criticism that's going to come his way.
