It could have been even better for England but Jonny Bairstow dropped Steve Smith and Travis Head.

The Smith drop cost England 18 runs, and we don't yet know the damage the Head drop will cause.

The top one is a tougher chance, but Bairstow should really be taking the second.

I can't help but feel that Smith's attitude towards being given out today - as at Edgbaston - is very close to dissent. Yes you're very very good, but you can still be given out. Accept it.

Stuart Broad then removed Steve Smith in the penultimate over before lunch to leave England thoroughly on top.

Smith was far from convinced that he nicked it but the technology was conclusive.

  4. 'There's a strong link between England football and cricket'published at 13:32 British Summer Time 6 July 2023

England manager Gareth Southgate on TMS: "Both sports are so professional and almost 12 months of the year so I don't think it would work (playing both professionally).

"When I was a kid, Ian Botham was playing at Scunthorpe, Steve Orgizovic had some games at county level. It would be wonderful if that was still possible but I think we've gone past that.

"I used to watch cricket every summer and I loved it. When I was playing football, I was lucky enough to get to know a few of the players. I got to know Alec Stewart well, he's become a very close friend.

"Now we've linked in quite a bit with the current guys, I've spoken to Rob Key quite a bit to find out what they're doing. When Andrew Strauss was running things we linked quite a lot between England football and cricket.

"We've tried to share ideas on coaching, player development and pathways. There's a strong link."

Chris Woakes, playing his first Test since March 2022, then removed Marnus Labuschagne.

The right-hander struggled throughout - largely because of Wood's pace - and his edge just looped up to Joe Root at first slip for a simple catch.

  6. 'I could do a bit of everything'published at 13:28 British Summer Time 6 July 2023

England manager Gareth Southgate on TMS: "I wasn't playing at the level that the Nevilles were. Phil in particular could have gone either way and played cricket professionally.

"I know my place. I could do a bit of everything but not to an outstanding level. I was more of a bowler.

"I grew up in Sussex and now living in Yorkshire, you see the difference in the amount of cricket that is played up here, the amount of junior clubs and how much it's played at school.

"It's no wonder the county is so strong, you're just surrounded by it."

Mark Wood bowled an absolutely rip-snorting opening spell too.

He bowled four overs with every single delivery over the 90mph mark.

He got Usman Khawaja with a 95mph delivery and it was practically unplayable.

  9. 'This morning has been brilliant'published at 13:23 British Summer Time 6 July 2023

England manager Gareth Southgate on TMS: "It's been brilliant this morning. I've been virtually behind the bowler's arm so to see England bowl as well as they have - and we knew there was going to be an edge after what happened at Lord's - it's a brilliant day to be here.

"The Western Terrace, it's hard to tell any difference from normal! You wouldn't expect to come here as an Aussie and be welcomed with open arms. But it's been a brilliant morning's play for England.

"If I contrast today to watching Geoff Boycott and Chris Tavare when I was younger, the speed of scoring, the game has just projected forward."

In addition to getting Steve Smith (see four posts down) Stuart Broad also removed David Warner in the first over of the day.

It is the 16th time that Broad has got Warner in Tests.

  11. Postpublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 6 July 2023

England manager Gareth Southgate on TMS: "I've lived in Yorkshire for 20 years and although I'm not Yorkshire born and bred, I know if I'd rocked up to Headingley in a waistcoat today then I'd have got plenty of stick walking in!"

Love this England, and love the video clips. I've watched Khawaja's wicket at least a dozen times.

Mark Wood has bowled super quick but with Jonny Bairstow dropping two catches, how crucial could that be? Marsh and Head have a lot of work to do for Australia.

England have bowled fantastically but for me it's been Mark Wood who has been the highlight. England could've had another one wicket but it's been a great morning.

England dropped Head to get Smith on strike to get him at Lord's as well. Is this a plan?!
