  1. Aus 53-2published at 18 overs

Appeals from England as Chris Woakes raps Marnus Labuschagne on the pads.

It's prolonged appeal, they like it, but Ben Stokes, stood at short fine leg, gestures that it was going over.

The England captain is right too, it was going down as well.

It wakes the Western Terrace up, though.

Scary thought but the Aussies will be bowling even quicker! 😱

    Jon from Bishop’s Stortford

Than Mark Wood? I wouldn't think so, Jon...

It's annoying as a fast bowler to watch the batters rotating the strike so well. In the context of this game, this is a really important partnership.

  4. Aus 52-2published at 17 overs

Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne seem happy to just calm things down at the moment.

Smith, who is playing his 100th Test, works a single into mid-wicket.

Extreme pace is very rare commodity. You can't really teach it, you're born with it.

When he’s fit and in that mood, Mark Wood is unplayable. What a weapon for a captain to have.

    Tom in Northants

Wood has outrageous pace nowadays, combined with much better accuracy.

There are words that describe a wicket very succinctly on their own... 'snaffled', 'plucked', 'tickled'. For that Wood ball, only 'splattered' is required!

  7. Aus 51-2published at 16 overs

Any leave that misses the stumps is a good leave, I suppose, but Marnus Labuschagne draws oohs and aahs from the Headingley crowd as a Chris Woakes delivery just goes over middle and off stump.

It's been a cracking 75 minutes so far.

That ball from Mark Wood was far too quick, there should be a limit on how quick you can bowl and the good thing is Khawaja stayed in this crease... didn't help him though.

Steve Smith's stats against extreme pace are good but starting against pace is really difficult.

What's underestimated about Wood is his ability to swing the ball both ways.

  10. Aus 50-2published at 15 overs

    Labuschagne 17, Smith 1

It's a different pace from Ollie Robinson, but it is still causing problems for Australia.

A lovely bit of movement back in beats Marnus Labuschagne all ends up but it is too high for a serious lbw appeal.

There's almost some confusion in the running between Labuschagne and Steve Smith too, but the former just about gets back in time.

  15. Aus 47-2published at 14 overs

A slight pressure reliever as Marnus Labuschagne is able to drive Chris Woakes through the covers for four.

That ends a run of 22 dots to Labuschagne.

The fourth umpire has come out with the case of balls.

Steve Smith is the new batter.

He is roundly booed to the crease by the Headingley crowd.

    It is Smith's 100th Test.
