Definitely not job done but England well on top for me. Flip the game and have Australia needing 99 with 6 wickets left and I don't think many would give us too much of a chance.

England hopefully won't need anything quite this dramatic from Ben Stokes today hopefully.

A nice little 40-odd not out as England win by six wickets?

    Yes please.

Harry Brook will be joined by Ben Stokes.

Stokes worked his first ball through mid-wicket for four and will resume on seven.

There have been some shaky shots from Harry Brook but he'll resume on 40 after lunch.

If he bats for another hour England will have practically won, you would think.

Tony Bickley: Joe Root continuing to underwhelm with the bat this series. Not a Bazball player in the traditional sense, and just needs to stick to what made him one of the best batsman in the world! Next two Tests are time for him to get back to his best.

Gerard0207: Awful shot by Root. One more wicket, and Australia are favourites. I'm so nervous watching this

Mo Stewart: England declared in the first innings of this series with Joe Root not out on 118. In his five innings since then he's scored 114. Hindsight is everything, but if that 118 was allowed to become 150+, he'd be playing with more confidence than he is at the moment.

Root will be incredibly disappointed with his dismissal.

It was a shot he didn't need to play and gave Australia another opening.

Joe Root played and missed from his first ball and made everyone's heart drop.

He looked shaky for a lot of his innings but he did play some nice drives.

Zak Crawley played some nice shots this morning as he passed 20 in both innings of a home Test for the first time in his 18 games in this country.

He'd played a brilliant cover drive for four the ball before edging Mitch Marsh behind to fall for 44.

England then opted to promote Moeen Ali to three, rather than Harry Brook, who did so in the first innings after the injury to Ollie Pope.

It may have been because Brook didn't look quite right there in the first innings, or they wanted to keep the left-right hand combination going.

It was a short stay for Moeen, who only made five from 15 balls.

Australia allowed England some very easy singles in the initial few overs this morning.

But Mitchell Starc eventually got it right and dismissed Ben Duckett lbw.

Duckett reviewed but it was smashing into leg stump. It was a bit of a waste of a review. Hopefully it doesn't come back to haunt England.

Harry Brook is 40 not out from 54 balls at lunch.

He's edged a few balls, both short and over the slips, but he's also played some lovely strokes.

In case you're just joining us, Brook came in at five again today, rather than three like in the first innings.

    England needed it from Brook.

Australia were absolutely ecstatic with the wicket of Root and it gave them an opening, but I'm putting England ahead at lunch.

I must say that Harry Brook has been terrific.

He has taken some risks, but under pressure, it just looks like water off a duck's back to him.

Another session that has swung one way and then the other. The crowd have enjoyed it but there is a palpable tension around the ground.

Everyone knows there is still a long way to go.

    Right then, the situation:

    England need 98 more runs.

    Australia need six more wickets.

If England win it is 2-1 and the Ashes are alive.

If Australia win it is 3-0 and they win their first series in England since 2001.
