Give him his due, Harry Brook has actually batted very well so far today

Four leg byes! Thank you very much.

My smartwatch is telling me that my heart rate is at 82. That's not a good sign considering I've been sat down for two hours.

It's also telling me to go for a walk, but that's not going to happen. The Ashes are on the line here, mate.

Harry Brook's half-century came off 57 balls. His ninth score of fifty or more for England in just 10 Tests.

Headingley rises to Harry Brook. He is carrying England’s hopes right now.

Eng 191-6, need 60 runs to win

A fine innings from Harry Brook, back in his favoured number five.

He pulls firmly in front of square for two to reach the milestone.

    Please keep going, Harry. Please.

  6. Eng 190-6published at 39.4 overs

    No. This is unbearable.

Another short one pops up in the air as Woakes tries to fend it off, but it somehow lands safely between slip and gully.

I've fallen in love with Test cricket through listening to all you brilliant commentators on Radio 5 (although I do miss Blowers.) I'm still learning though so can you explain why it makes such a difference to bring Brooks in as a number 5 instead of a number 3?

    Jill from Suffolk

It's hard to explain exactly why, Jill. Some of it will be familiarity, Brook hasn't batted at three very often for Yorkshire and had never done it England until this game. At five the ball is generally older and the bowlers are more tired so it's easier to face them too.

  8. Eng 188-6published at 39.2 overs

Extra bounce from Cummins and it flies off the shoulder of Brook's bat just past gully.

    They scramble a single.

    Aaaand breathe.

This is where we see how mature Harry Brook is. We saw how he batted maturely in Pakistan.

But this is the real nitty gritty. When he's the only recognised batter and the Ashes are on the line.

This when we will see what he is really about.

  10. Eng 187-6published at 39 overs

    Need 64 runs to win

Four more very welcome runs from the bat of Chris Woakes.

Maybe if I just keep repeating that, it'll keep happening? That's how cricket works, right?

This one's a shorter ball, clipped off his hips down to fine leg.

England feel that the best way to play now out there is to score all the time.

They feel players like Chris Woakes will just get out if they hang around.

I think when the ball is pitched up Woakes is a good player. I worry when it's bounced at him, though.

  13. Eng 178-6published at 38 overs

    Need 73 runs to win

    Another single ticked off.

I'm getting married in just under two weeks' time but I am 100% more nervous about this run chase than I will be on that morning.

Ninja Embellish: Bairstow should not be taking any further part in this series. Dreadful both behind and in front of the stumps.

Kevin Ticehurst: Drop Bairstow for Old Trafford, that’s enough. Bring in Foakes!

Thomas Banks: Bairstow cannot be in the squad for the next 2 Tests, for his sake and ours! He’s had a stinking series so far.

Lee Chandler: Please drop Bairstow now. Missed catches and offering nothing with the bat.

There is a quiet around the ground now. It’s not quite resignation but there’s not a great deal of belief either.

  18. Eng 173-6published at 37 overs

    This is agony, isn't it?

Everything is telling me that those Stokes and Bairstow wickets means game over.

But there's always that little niggle of 'but maybe...'

Ben Stokes was unfortunate but Jonny Bairstow is out playing the same shot as he did the first innings. It's wide of the off stump and it's just not a good cricket shot. Then Chris Woakes comes out and attempts to launch one first ball to the cover boundary with two fielders out there!

Groans in the Western Terrace and they only get louder after the replay of the wicket is shown on the big screen.

Yorkshire’s Jonny Bairstow has not pleased his people with that shot.
