    Lancashire 544-7 dec v Northamptonshire 342 & 81-2

Emilio Gay and Sam Whiteman are digging in well for Northants in a difficult situation.

They have survived a few close calls, including one for Gay that dropped just short of Steven Croft at leg slip.

Their partnership is worth 54 and the deficit is down to 117.

WICKET Leaning c Moores b Hutton 21published at 14:10 British Summer Time 28 July 2023

    Notts v Kent 59-5 (target 407)

Five down now and Nottinghamshire are surely heading for victory at some point this afternoon.

Kent captain Jack Leaning aims a pull shot at Brett Hutton and gets a bottom edge through to the wicketkeeper.

To think many were questioning the wisdom of Notts batting on for as long as they did!

  3. 50 runs

up for Kentpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 28 July 2023

    Notts v Kent 50-4 (target 407)

Rather like Harry Finch before him, Alex Blake is going for his shots - he's just taken three boundaries off a Brett Hutton over to bring up the Kent 50 in 13 overs.

Unfortunately for the visitors, the wickets column is filled by the number 4 - not a situation they'd have hoped for with 59 more overs scheduled for this match.

Yorkshire 340, Durham 106-1. Match abandoned as a draw. Yorkshire 7 pts, Durham 8 pts

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

It has been hot and sunny in Scarborough today. Actually the best day of the week, weather wise. But the umpires said the field was too soft in places after yesterday's heavy rain and flash floods last night.

Of the 384 overs scheduled in this game only 117 were played, meaning that the eight points Durham take from the draw increases their lead at the top of Division Two to 57 points, with three games left to play in September.

For now, Durham turn their attentions to the One-Day Cup with the first of eight group games coming on Tuesday at home to Worcestershire, while Yorkshire will hope for better luck at North Marine Road, where they host their own first ODC group game against Kent.

Whether Yorkshire were keen to play, or not today, remains to be seen. But, given they are about to discover the level of sanctions they will be hit with by the ECB this afternoon, it could well be their minds are on other things and the outcome of this game will be of little relevance.

  5. Postpublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 28 July 2023

    Lancashire 544-7 dec v Northamptonshire 342 & 73-2

There is a lot of chat and noise from the Lancashire close fielders.

And a few interesting glances as Jack Morley gets one to bounce extravagantly.

  6. wicket

WICKET Finch lbw b Hutton 12published at 13:54 British Summer Time 28 July 2023

    Notts v Kent 34-4 (target 407)

Harry Finch flings out his arms in despair as the umpire's finger is raised to signal a second wicket for Brett Hutton.

Finch didn't get that far forward and, unless there was an inside edge, it's hard to work out his grounds for complaint.

Either way, he's back in the pavilion and Nottinghamshire's bowlers are on a roll.

Especially Hutton - who has just taken his 50th County Championship wicket of the season!

  7. Postpublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 28 July 2023

    Notts v Kent 33-3 (target 407)

Well, maybe Kent aren't giving up on this 407 target despite losing three early wickets!

Harry Finch has emerged after lunch with an attacking outlook, hitting 12 from his first eight balls and including two boundaries.

Realistically, though, it's all about time at the crease for Finch and Jack Leaning this afternoon.

  8. Postpublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 28 July 2023

    Lancashire 544-7 dec v Northamptonshire 342 & 66-2

A nice shot for four from Emilio Gay off Tom Hartley is a good way to get ticking in the afternoon session.

And he hits a lovely four along the ground off Jack Morley at the other end.

He has batted well in this match.

Kent are in a spot of trouble at the moment - and they've just confirmed one of their top batters will be leaving the county at the end of the season.

Jordan Cox, who isn't playing in this match, has turned down a new deal to stay at Canterbury and will join Essex for the 2024 campaign.

Meanwhile, Jack Leaning and Harry Finch are back out in the middle at Trent Bridge as Kent attempt to survive these two sessions.

Gary Sobers hit his famous sixes at Swansea on his 37th birthday

We saw plenty of big hitting this morning at Trent Bridge, where Joe Clarke bludgeoned 73 from 40 balls to propel Nottinghamshire towards a declaration against Kent.

But they'd have got there even quicker with the kind of performance produced by a cricketing legend for Notts exactly 50 years ago today!

On the day of his 87th birthday, you can relive Sir Garfield Sobers' extraordinary feat of six sixes in an over against Glamorgan's Malcolm Nash at the St Helen's Gound, Swansea.

Matt Taylor is last out - and Worcestershire have a 105-run first-innings lead.

It is a third wicket for Finch, who is developing a nice habit of cleaning up a tail.

So they can now finally dine at Cheltenham College.

Gone to lunch. Back at two.

    Breaking

Yorkshire (340) draw with Durham (106-1)

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, there will be no play today in Scarborough.

The outfield is not fit to play and so, after only 120 overs of cricket across the four days, the match is abandoned as a draw.

Leaders Durham take eight points and Yorkshire, seven.

Finch strikes again. Paul van Meekeren this time.

Two wickets in three balls - and that means a delayed lunch at Cheltenham.

The Pears now have maximum bowling points. And Gloucestershire would like an extra batting point.

Last man Matt Taylor, nursing an infected toe, comes in to see if he can help Zaman Akhter and add the seven more runs required. And Finch greets him with an attempted yorker!

  16. wicket

    Glamorgan 521-8 dec, Derbyshire 318 & 185-0

Derbyshire openers Harry Came and Luis Reece bat throughout the morning session against Glamorgan.

Reece (108) has become only the 20th player in Derbyshire's history to make two centures in a CountyChampionship, following his 131 in the first innings.

Came, on 66, has just surpassed his 65 in the first innings, and will be looking to this time press on to a ton of his own, to follow his maiden century against Gloucestershire at Derby in May.

Huge wicket on the stroke of lunch!

Ben Compton is leg before to Dane Paterson for eight and Kent are deep in trouble as they attempt to save the game.

They were set an unlikely target of 407 from 72 overs, but it'll be a battle to survive after losing three wickets inside the first eight of those - two to Paterson and Brett Hutton with the other.
