    Lancashire 504-7 v Northamptonshire 342

Two singles in the first three balls and Lancashire get to 500.

The fourth ball is clouted for four by George Balderson.

He then takes two and a single off the final ball.

Nine off the over. Lancashire show their intent - the lead is 165.

  2. Midday inspection at Scarboroughpublished at 10:56 British Summer Time 28 July 2023

    Yorkshire 340 v Durham 106-1

Day four in Scarborough and a fourth day of weather problems.

There will be a pitch inspection at midday to see if there is any chance of play.

Given how far behind the game is, there must be a chance that both sides shake hands and admit this is a dead loss.

  3. Notts and Kent pondering whether to stick or twistpublished at 10:54 British Summer Time 28 July 2023

Nottinghamshire and Kent will probably be musing over the old question of whether to stick or twist on the final day at Trent Bridge.

The home side resume this morning in a healthy position at 176-1, leading by 210 and a spell of quick scoring before lunch could enable Steven Mullaney’s side to declare and offer Kent the carrot of a run chase.

However, Luke Fletcher’s ankle problem is likely to leave seventh-placed Notts a bowler down – and they may also be wary of giving even a sniff of victory to the team just below them in the table, with a line-up that includes big hitters like Alex Blake and Joey Evison.

A draw would be enough to keep Kent just out of the bottom two, before the two sides meet again at Canterbury when the County Championship resumes in September.

  4. How many runs is enough for Lancashire?published at 10:52 British Summer Time 28 July 2023

    Northamptonshire 342, Lancashire 498-7

An outstanding day's batting from Lancashire has set up the possibility of pushing for victory on this fourth day.

Centuries from Luke Wells, Josh Bohannon and Phil Salt - his off just 74 balls - helped the Red Rose smash 377 runs in just 67.5 overs of a curtailed day.

They lead by 156 and the question now is when they decide they have enough runs to have a crack at Northamptonshire.

At what point will Lancashire skipper Keaton Jennings decide to declare?

Tom Hartley and George Balderson are the men not out but, having seen number 10 Will Williams out with a bat in the warm-ups, the hunch is that Lancs will carry on for now.

Northamptonshire are now 34 points adrift of safety after Middlesex's win yesterday and can ill afford to lose this game, but they will have to show plenty of fight with the bat when they come to the crease second time around.

Regular Northants watchers will know that has been in short supply at times this summer.

North Marine Road, Scarborough saw no play on day three

The BBC weather forecast for the UK is once again a bit mixed.

"Patchy cloud, sunny spells and a few light showers today. Turning more unsettled into tomorrow."

But, given all the rain Scarborough copped for yesterday, it does not look very likely that there will be much play at North Marine Road today.

  7. Good Morning and Welcomepublished at 10:45 British Summer Time 28 July 2023

Welcome back to Day Four of this week's County Championship programme.

After three 'results' yesterday, as Hampshire, Warwickshire and Somerset all suffered three-day home defeats, we have five games still going.

And one of them, the weather-hit Division Two game between Yorkshire v Durham at Scarborough, looks a bit of a non-starter.

But, in Division One, Lancashire and Notts will both be intent on building a big enough lead to consider a possible declaration.

Josh Bohannon's second century of the summer was his eighth for Lancashire, seven of which have been at Old Trafford

After tons yesterday for Luke Wells, Josh Bohannon and Phil Salt at Old Trafford, Notts opener Ben Slater looks the best early bet to hoost his bat today at Trent Bridge - and complete a cecond century of the match.

And, in the other two games in Div Two, all options are still open.

Derbyshire openers Harry Came and Luis Reece have the chance to build on the 243 runs they have shared in this game against Glamorgan (165 in the first innings and now 78 so far in the second).

And the Price brothers - Ollie and Tom - will be looking to add to their 92-run stand against Worcestershire at Cheltenham College, as Gloucestershire resume on 212-4 on what for them is only day three.
