In a must-win thriller, what better way to kick it off than another Broad v Warner battle, and James Anderson charging in at his home ground?

To bring you all the action from the first session is Timothy Abraham.

The pitches at Old Trafford this year have had been decent with pace and a carry. I am expecting pace and bounce. James Anderson has never had a five-for at Old Trafford for England, so could this be the time? It could be the last time he plays a Test here but this isn't a sentimental pick. England are not about that. They will pick their best team to win the match.

It's been a brilliant series. Both teams have put Test cricket in the forefront of the mind. I've lost count of the amount of people I have met this week asking me how to get tickets.

Australia captain Pat Cummins on Sky Sports: "We would have bowled first too but it looks like a good wicket, so it's not a bad toss to lose.

"We've made the call to play without a spinner on the conditions and we feel like we've got plenty of bowling, two all-rounders plus Travis Head so lots of options.

"Losing Nathan Lyon made things different for us, so we had to change things a bit from normal and I guess there is always an element of risk in that.

"It can be dangerous [looking to draw]. I know there's weather around but we are absolutely playing to win and to win the series."

After the toss England captain Ben Stokes is told by Mike Atherton on Sky Sports that no captain has won the toss, bowled first and won a Test at Old Trafford.

Stokes said: "It would be a nice time to be the first to do that!"

On the weather: "We have spoken about the weather but I think today is not too bad and if the Test goes deeper and we'll come up with some plans then. The way we go about it naturally does that. If the game gets to the point where we push things on we can do that."

On the return of James Anderson: "The break has done him the world of good. He's been a unbelievable performer over many a year. Even if he's not operating at what he thinks is his best level he is still putting batters under pressure. I am looking forward to him running in from his own end."

On the decision to bat Moeen Ali at number three: "It's more about Moeen's ability to impact the game than anything else, especially with Chris Woakes at eight. It's nothing to do with protecting Harry Brook at five whatsoever."

Ben Stokes is going to have to make history if England are to keep this series alive.

No team has ever won a Test at Old Trafford after winning the toss and choosing to bowl first.

    Big moment!

Apparently, the pitch is good but the overhead conditions are lending themselves to bowling first.

Over to you, Mr Anderson and co.

The pitch is rock hard. There's a bit of a green grass there. I don't think it will be quite as quick as Headingley but there should be some good carry.

Right then, the toss is imminent.

We're never quite sure what to expect from England but what would you do in Ben Stokes' shoes if he wins the toss?

Thumbs up for bat first, thumbs down for bowl.

Ben Stokes is out in his blazer ahead of the toss.

He’s a bit early, though, so - still blazered up - joins the bowlers warming up and sends down a couple of offies.

So excited for another day of Ashes excitement. I won't be working very hard today.

Update - it’s looking a little cloudier in Trafford Park now, perfect swing conditions for our Jimmy! Surely we’re not going to get more than 3 days of play here? It’s made for Bazball right? Right?!

  13. 'A head scratcher for captains and forecasters'published at 10:18 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

BBC weather meteorologist Matt Taylor: "It’s been a nail-biting test series, and that’s just for the weather forecasters, never mind the cricket fans among us.

"The tension for all continues in the fourth Test too as the ‘summer’ weather keeps us on our toes.

"For the first three days though, I’m optimistic of a lot of play, even through Wednesday, Thursday and Friday have the risk of a few passing showers.

"Tactics will still come into play though, as prospects of limited play this weekend loom large.

"Saturday could potentially be a washout as a deepening low pressure system looks set to bring widespread rain and strengthening winds.

"The difficult bit for us forecasters right now is what then happens then for the final day on Sunday. Whilst there is a chance that rain will linger over Old Trafford, there’s low to moderate chance that it could’ve slipped further south, allowing more play.

"Either way, it’s a head scratcher for captains and forecasters alike."

Both Ashes series have provided gripping cricket, close calls and endless drama.

But one of the biggest shocks has been how England's women dominated Australia. The visitors retained the trophy but the series was drawn 8-8. and England won both white-ball series.

We've been digging in to whether England have managed to close the gap between themselves and the world champions.

  16. Daily ZaltzQuiz: The answerpublished at 10:06 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

I'm a little later than 10:00 BST but here's the moment you've all been waiting for.

A reminder of the question, first: Stuart Broad begins the Old Trafford Test needing two more wickets to reach 600. Jimmy Anderson has 688.

Their careers as Test bowlers have both been stories of striking improvement from difficult beginnings. After their first 20 Tests, Anderson had taken 62 wickets, average 39.2, and Broad 52 wickets at 40.2.

From their 21st Tests onwards, Anderson has taken 626 wickets at 24.9, and Broad 546 at 26.3.

Six other England bowlers have taken 250 or more Test wickets – Fred Trueman, Brian Statham, Derek Underwood, Bob Willis, Ian Botham and Graeme Swann. For today's Ashes guesswork challenge, what was their collective combined average in (a) their first 20 Tests, and (b) the rest of their Test careers?

    The answer: (a) 24.0. (b) 26.6.

Botham averaged 19.3 as a bowler in his first 20 Tests, Underwood 20.0, Trueman 21.1, Statham 27.2, Willis 29.0 and Swann 30.0.

Over the rest of their careers, Botham averaged 31.5, Underwood 27.9, Trueman 21.7, Statham 24.1, Willis’ 24.2, and Swann 29.9.

In all, 50 bowlers have taken 250 or more Test wickets. Anderson’s 14.3 runs per wicket difference between his average in his first 20 Tests (39.2) and his average over the rest of his career (24.9) is the biggest of those 50, and Broad’s 13.9 difference (40.2; 26.3) is the second biggest.

Lorenzo: Swann and Botham started off well, I think. I think Anderson and Broad reverse the normal trend of being a master/tearaway when first picked, then gently declining later on. 25 at first, then later 29.

We've been speculating about the rain and whether it'll make England play any differently, so let's hear the thoughts of their batting coach Marcus Trescothick, who has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast:

"We're all aware there's a bit of rain around and I think you keep one eye on it, but it can just be a bit of a distraction.

"You have got to end up just playing the game. Get in, get amongst it, and then adapt as you go along. I don't think you can predict on the toss. I think we'll just have to wait and see.

"I've seen a bit of a pitch report and I think it'll be a pitch with good pace as we go along. But it might do a little bit more today, so that that might play into whoever wins the toss might want, and it might depend on the weather.

"Obviously, it's a challenging week. The last Test obviously got so tight, and we were on the right end that time which was good.

"Emotionally, it's quite tricky. Ashes cricket is draining, it is so much more unique than any other series you play. Every hour that's played has a lot more emotion in it.

" I think [Moeen] can do a better job than probably people giving credit for at three. We know what he's like when he's playing well and how entertaining he can be, how aggressive he is and that suits the style of our team."
