    Zaltz Quiz - Hmmm. I reckon, based purely on guesswork it's a) 34.2 and b) 28.3.

    Tom in Surrey

Zaltz Quiz - great Question. I would say 19 in first 20 Tests as runs weren't as easy to come by back then. And 27 onwards as players didn't age as well as they do now with all that goes into the conditioning of the players.

    Anon

Zaltz Quiz: Different era for most of those bowlers. I seem to remember (from my childhood) that 300 was a really big Test match innings. So, I reckon something like.... A) 28 B) 22.

For all the fear of rain, it’s warm and there is plenty of blue sky overhead at Old Trafford.

The forecast suggests it’ll stay dry all day, too. So England will have at least one day to try and force a result…

  4. 'Jimmy is writing his Ashes history'published at 09:32 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

Daniel Gidney, CEO of Lancashire County Cricket Club, has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live this morning:

"Ashes come around every now and again and the customers love it. We promise to deliver to those customers an amazing experience off the field.

"We leave it to Ben and the team to do it on the field!

"We've been doing Ashes tests for over 100 years here so we're very excited about it. You can feel the atmosphere, it gets very tense just half an hour before the first ball.

"I think Emirates Old Trafford has a very, very good pitch here. In 2005 I think Ricky Ponting scored a big 100 to get the draw.

"We always have a bit of weather in Manchester, but it kind of adds to the interest I suppose.

"And with Jimmy Anderson here as well, he's absolutely fantastic, an unbelievable athlete and in this Test attack, those five bowlers have more wickets going into a Test match than any.

"Ideally, we want to win the toss and have Jimmy bowling in these conditions this morning.

"Jim is an absolute legend of Lancashire and England. And Shane Warne 30 years ago bowled the ball of the century here, so Emirates Old Trafford has a load of Ashes history - and Jim is about to write his."

I'm not sure how we'll cope with England going any crazier, but it's a valid point.

With days four and five potentially wiped out by rain, and England needing to win at all costs, how is Ben Stokes going to play it?

If Australia bat first, you'd suspect that they will just settle in and try and bat for two days.

If England bat first, they will probably try and score 500 in one day.

We could be treated to some proper fun.

Due to the possibility of rain in the next few days, now is the time to go crazy and play Bazball, otherwise the series is lost. Come on England!

    ZaltzQuiz - let's go with (a) 26.2, and (b) 22.9 - for no real reason.

    Tom in Yorkshire

Re: Andy Zaltzmans quiz. Some bowlers got better and others worse. Combined 1st 20 matches 478 wkts @ 23.9 and after 1341 wkts @ 26.7.

    James

Based on Botham's career starting off with a ridiculously low average and then dropping off mid 80s onwards, I reckon this group will have got worse over time. 23.5 for the first 20 and then 29 thereafter.

If you're just joining us, here's a recap on today's quiz question.

We will reveal the answer at 10:00 BST.

Stuart Broad begins the Old Trafford Test needing two more wickets to reach 600. Jimmy Anderson has 688.

Their careers as Test bowlers have both been stories of striking improvement from difficult beginnings. After their first 20 Tests, Anderson had taken 62 wickets, average 39.2, and Broad 52 wickets at 40.2.

From their 21st Tests onwards, Anderson has taken 626 wickets at 24.9, and Broad 546 at 26.3.

Six other England bowlers have taken 250 or more Test wickets – Fred Trueman, Brian Statham, Derek Underwood, Bob Willis, Ian Botham and Graeme Swann.

For today's Ashes guesswork challenge, what was their collective combined average in (a) their first 20 Tests, and (b) the rest of their Test careers?

    a) 34.5 average in first 20 tests. b) 27.4 average the rest of their careers. P.S it’s currently reasonably sunny round the corner in Trafford park!

Anon (please leave your names on texts!)

I believe Botham had a great first half of career bowling, so will guess the others as well and go opposite way to modern day. 24.3 first 20 tests and 35.2 for rest of careers.

With James Anderson back in England's XI and on his home ground, why not take a look at his best Ashes wicket through his own eyes?

    It's a beauty, too.

I had just finished my first year of Sixth Form during this series and this ball is one of the very few things I remember about it!

  13. Why Ashes is most closely-fought in historypublished at 08:52 British Summer Time 19 July 2023

While we're on the subject of Andy Zaltzman, the man himself has written a BBC Sport column on why this series has been the most closely-fought Ashes in history (so far!).

He has been crunching the numbers (there are a lot of them) to show just how much this contest has lived up to its hype.

You can read all about it here.

Mr Zaltzman bowls us over with another unplayable delivery! I think they started better but improved less than in the modern era. Let's try 35.4, improving to 28.1.

    Cris in Devon

Collective combined average: 32.1 in 1st 20, 28.7 rest of career

I think it might be close, so I'm going to go with a before average of 30 and an after average of 25.
