England nerves were frayed further when Zak Crawley was given out lbw to Cameron Green, but successfully overturned the decision on review.
Australia struck early in England's reply, Ben Duckett feathering a Mitchell Starc delivery through to Alec Carey.
Every run Australia scored must have stung after that, but Woakes did not have to endure too much pain in the end. He did eventually claim his first Ashes five-fer to leave Australia 317 all out.
Chris Woakes thought he had removed Josh Hazlewood the next over - but was denied by a very tight no ball call.
England made the perfect start when James Anderson removed Pat Cummins with the first ball of the day.
Anderson's 689th Test wicket.
Thanks, Matthew. Go and grab a deserved break.
I agree that England will be reasonably satisfied with their morning's work.
Let's take a look back at some of the highlights...
England should be relatively happy with their morning. It could have gone worse, anyway.
Tom Mallows is here to take over from me. See you later.

Zak Crawley and Moeen Ali have played exceptionally well there. All Moeen had to do was absorb the pressure and his job is done. Now that ball is older it looks pretty decent out there.

Zak Crawley plods forward and that is the end of the session.
Not bad for England, that.

That was a great shot by Crawley. He was standing still and the ball was wide of the off-stump, he barely moves his feet.
Sumptuous from Crawley, who cracks Pat Cummins through the covers.
This could be the last over before lunch.

England haven't been as aggressive as we've seen in the past, maybe the pitch isn't allowing that.

Cameron Green hasn't quite lived up to expectation in this series - with bat or ball. I thought he was going to be a match-winner.
He showed in the last Ashes down under that he can be a very dangerous seamer and almost got Crawley lbw two overs ago. I'm not sure he'd be into the attack this early if Australia hadn't picked so many seamers, however.

I love this from Moeen Ali, he's absorbing all the pressure. He's seen off the new bowlers, the ball is a bit older. In this circumstances, he's done his job and it's getting easier out there.
Crawley 20, Moeen 29
Much, much better from Moeen later in the over as he drives Cummins through wide mid-off. The crowd is just starting to ramp up after the two boundaries.

It's almost like having two fielders in the gully when Cameron Green is there, he is such an exceptional fielder.
Moeen slashes over gully!
The streaky four brings up Moeen's 3,000th run and sees him join an exclusive club of players to have reached that mark and to have also taken 200 Test wickets.
Moeen is the 16th man to do it.
Zak Crawley reviewed that straight away. He knew it was leg side. There are 12 important minutes to go until lunch.
Missing by an inch or two.
Zak Crawley survives and gets a big punch of the gloves from Moeen Ali.
Deep breaths.
