I feel like there's some interesting maths going on here. Namely around whether the runs scored by a batter follows a "memoryless" probability distribution - I.e., the probability of a batter going on to score another X runs doesn't depend on how many they've scored already (that innings). If it were then the "average post 40" should be the same as the overall batting average, 27? But because it's probably better batters getting above 40 I'll go higher and say 32.

My answer to ZaltzQuiz is 20 because it is a nice round number. John,

Both perfectly acceptable methods of coming to an answer.

Bright and breezy this morning at Old Trafford.

The sun is supposed to stick around again today so if England can take these last two wickets quickly, there might be quick runs to be had.

  5. Blue skies up ahead at OTpublished at 09:47 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

Would you believe it. After what felt like interminable rain for weeks in Manchester there's blue skies and sunshine up ahead at Old Trafford. I even got sunburnt watching the action yesterday.

I'm not sure it will last into the weekend, though. So I expect England to accelerate today to move the match on.

Four of us in the car to OT. Quiz guesses: Richard 22 Chris 25 Joe 12 Edward 19.5

    Richard, Chris, Joe and Edward

I reckon that the number is similar to what happened - around 8 - because getting a 50 isn’t easy. Stuck in an SAP setup meeting in Turin. Can’t wait for the start!

    Owen in Torino

I'm surprised it's over 40, so I'm going 2.4...more importantly I'm going on a family holiday to Dubai on Saturday evening, will the hotel sports bar be showing Open golf or Cricket ?

    The cricket of course!

Tricky one....as a guess I would say there's a 25% probability of reaching a century once you pass 40. So on that basis I'm going 15 runs.

    Rob, Hampshire.

Only 27 added, getting to fifty is hard, centuries are rare

    Steve in Birmingham

4.5 runs (roughly the same as my career average)

  10. Baristow's 'stunning' catch'published at 09:25 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    This certainly deserves another look.

Jonny Bairstow's glovework has been under the spotlight recently but this was a stunning take to dismiss Mitch Marsh. I think Bairstow even surprised himself judging by his celebration.

If you are just joining us here is a reminder of today's ZaltzQuiz:

Australia's numbers 3 to 6 all reached 40 yesterday, but all were out soon afterwards – Labuschagne made 51, Smith 41, Head 48 and Marsh 51.

Thus, they added 31 runs above 40 between them, an average of 7.75 each.

In all men's Test cricket in the last 25 years, there have been more than 9000 scores of 40 or more. To the nearest run, can you guess the average runs per dismissal added beyond 40 in those innings?

We will publish the answer at 10:30 BST.

Zaltzquiz answer The general feeling is that the aussies who made 40 got out cheaply thereafter so I think it's going to be higher than you think, but with Steve Smith averaging around 60 I'll conservatively go for 18.5

    Matt in Cheshire

Bearing in mind what a decent overall average is, but having gotten in 40+ most likely leads to a higher than average innings, I'm going 22

  13. Weather set fair - for nowpublished at 09:12 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

Good news for those heading to Old Trafford, it is set to stay dry all day so we should get a full day's play.

The forecast for the weekend is not so good - Saturday in particular. So I expect England will look to take advantage of the conditions today and really move the match on.

I would not be surprised if Australia are batting again by the end of the day.

  14. 'Admit it Australia: Stuart Broad is an Ashes legend'published at 09:07 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Yes you read that right.

Stuart Broad - so often pantomime villain in the eyes of Australian cricket fans - should be held up as an Ashes legend, says Ben Horne in the Herald Sun., external

Put your claws away Australia, it’s time to salute Stuart Broad as an Ashes legend.

What a player he is. If Broad was an Australian he would be one of the most popular sportsmen in the country.

Articulate, clever, outspoken, pot-stirrer, long-lasting, courageous – he’s got it all.

Australia might have hated Broad for refusing to walk when he nicked the cover off one to first slip in the 2013 Ashes, and then again when he had the hide to condemn us for breaching the spirit of cricket at Lord’s with the Jonny Bairstow dismissal.

But Broad’s delightfully contrary nature makes him even more absorbing.

The game needs characters and Broad is one of the greatest ever in Ashes history.

  15. 'England again manoeuvre Smith and Labuschagne into a cul-de-sac'published at 09:01 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

Gideon Haigh in the Australian, external highlighted England's continued ability to frustrate Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne.

The coming of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne to these Ashes is becoming its juiciest non-story. They arrive each Test with a trumpet blast of averages; they loom for a time with an ominous certainty; and somehow it is all staved off, adjourned to another day.

Despite having restricted the Australian duo to one score of more than fifty this summer, England, at least for public consumption, remained superstitiously cautious. Asked about their form last week, Ben Stokes mumbled: “You don’t read too much into stuff like that against world-class players.” Moeen Ali almost indulged in prophecy: “Great players are always due, and they are due some runs. As the opposition, you know it’s around the corner for players like that.

At stages either side of lunch of this teasing, fluctuating first day at Old Trafford, that prudence looked well justified – if not quite a corner turned, perhaps a roundabout entered. But, again, England were able to manoeuvre Smith and Labuschagne into a cul-de-sac. The great and the world-class have something in common with the humblest village battler: they take one ball to get out.

  16. 'Australians wasteful as Stokes masterminds England charge'published at 08:57 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

Daniel Brettig in the Sydney Morning Herald, external was critical of Australia's batting as they kept losing wickets after making decent starts, though he also reserved praise for England captain Ben Stokes' tactics that attempted to unsettle the Aussie batters.

To look down the scoreboard and see partnerships worth 46, 59, 63 and 65 was to recognise that the Australians had been wasteful and England resourceful. Together, they opened the door for this game to go any which way over the next four days, even though the tourists had lengthened their batting order by dropping the spin of Todd Murphy for a second all-rounder in Cameron Green.

Whether it was David Warner, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head, Green or Mitch Marsh, all had reasons to wonder how and why they had been able to get established but not go on. No two batters fell the same way.

Stokes’ great contribution to the England captaincy in the field has not been his bowling, as many may have expected from an all-rounder in his class. It has instead been his commitment to keep pressuring batters even after they have made a start.
