    A maiden from Chris Woakes.

Time for a change at the other end. James Anderson is going to replace Mark Wood.

    Time for something special, Jimmy.

    Second failed attempt.

A reminder England are without Moeen Ali at the moment.

The off-spinner suffered a groin injury while batting earlier and won't field (or therefore bowl) today.

If Jimmy was really as bad as everyone's making out surely Australia would have targeted him and he wouldn't have the best economy in the series?

Imagine what the messages would be like if Jimmy was actually bowling badly!

    Matt in Bristol

The suggestion Anderson is only being picked for "sentiment" is, I'm afraid, rubbish. He might not be at his wicket taking best, but his economy rate in the series is second to none (I think). In a series where England's front line spinner has struggled a bit for control, having someone who has gone at like 2.3 an over all series to just give you control has been vital.

  5. Aus 50-1published at 18 overs

    Khawaja 21, Labuschagne 0

Ben Duckett hits the stumps with a throw but Australia are able to scamper through for a leg bye.

Marnus Labuschagne then plays out four dots to end the over.

That might be the end of Mark Wood in this spell.

Mark Wood is going to continue.

There's just over half an hour left in the day.

Will England find another wicket or two?

That wicket means Glenn McGrath's record of dismissing the same batter the most times in Tests is safe from Stuart Broad. McGrath got Michael Atherton out 19 times. Broad has removed David Warner 17 times with one innings to go.

    Warner c Crawley b Woakes 24 (Aus 49-1)

    Chris Woakes strikes!

He just keeps nagging away at David Warner and eventually he has a fend.

It takes a big edge and Zak Crawley at second slip takes a good sharp two-handed catch to his right.

    A crucial breakthrough for England.

Mark Wood gets a fourth over and concedes just a single.

He has a conversation with Ben Stokes at the end of the over.

The writing off of Jimmy is embarrassing from England fans. The first time in his long career he has had three poor Test matches in a row. Four months ago he was ranked number one in the world. Every sportsman has a run of poor form. We will never appreciate him until he has retired. Write him off at your own peril. He's the greatest we've ever seen and will ever see.

  13. Aus 48-0published at 15 overs

Chris Woakes goes fuller to Usman Khawaja and the opener is able to just gently lean on a straight drive and pick up four more.

Australia really are looking pretty comfortable so far.

    England want the ball changed.

Joel Wilson checks it, drops it through his gadget and just throws it straight back to Ben Stokes.

    Nothing doing.

How has that not carried? Mark Wood can't believe that hasn't carried to the keeper. It is going the way of Australia at the minute.

  16. Aus 44-0published at 14 overs

    Arghhh.

Mark Wood has got his hands on this head.

He draws the edge of David Warner but it drops short of Jonny Bairstow.

How is that not carrying with the pace of Wood?

Nunya Bisnis: I love Jimmy, but at best - he's now at a level of village green bowling standard. This is The Ashes, there's zero room for sentiment & I feel that's the only reason Stokes has opted to play him. It's a sad end, to an absolutely sparkling career.

Must be some talent in your village then, Nunya!
