Time for one more over before the tea break and off-spinner Todd Murphy will bowl it.

I was thinking that would be a short ball but Mark Wood had different ideas with the way he played that.

Mark Wood gives himself room and thumps the ball inside-out over cover for four more.

No suggestion of playing for tea yet!

For the Love Island fans among you… Casey from the last winter series is here today.

Having been denied a six by the third umpire earlier in the over, Chris Woakes is now denied a four as Josh Hazlewood chases down his well-timed clip through mid-wicket and flicks it back just before the rope.

They run three and the partnership is now worth 30.

There's another useful little partnership forming here for England. Australia will be keen to take these last three wickets fairly quickly.

Chris Woakes is down the pitch and thumps Mitchell Marsh back over mid-off!

The crowd think it's six but the third umpire decides it bounced fractionally shy of the boundary cushion.

Hard to tell but the crowd don't like it. Booooooo.

  8. Eng 234-7published at 47 overs

Now we've got a short ball and Mark Wood does, indeed, take it on.

It's off the top edge but the ball goes fine and bounces over the rope for four.

Chance! Mark Wood drives into the covers and sets off for a single, only for Marnus Labuschagne to dive and stop it.

Wood is caught in the middle of the pitch but Labuschagne shapes to throw at the wrong end and by the time he switches, the England man is able to get back.

Mark Wood is happy to play his shots, but also some proper cricket shots too. We're yet to see any short balls but he'll probably take them on you would think.

Pat Cummins is back into the attack and Mark Wood crunches him through the covers for four!

    Lovely shot.

James Lowe: Having watched this pitch all season at Surrey (mostly under better overheads), anything over 250 would be great being out in. 280 par for me.

It's a pretty subdued atmosphere at The Oval. It is packed but there's a feeling of anticipation at what might happen.

Just a pair of singles from Mitchell Marsh's over, including one for Mark Wood last ball.

The England man seems to add a few yards to every single he takes by making absolutely sure he's not running on the pitch, usually finding himself at least two yards onto the neighbouring strip.

Thankfully for England, it doesn't prevent him getting home safely.

Change of bowling now. Mitchell Marsh is back into the attack for Australia.

It's not a great shot from Harry Brook but it's the way this England Test match team have committed to playing. Australia have a great chance now. If Australia take their chances and get right they could bowl England out for 250 here.

Can Wood and Woakes create a partnership to add some respectability to England's total? It's been entertaining cricket so far, but a little bit quieter at The Oval.

    What's happened there?!

Mitchell Starc loses control of the ball completely and sends down a very, very wide full toss.

Remarkably it's not signalled wide, though, and it was just low enough that it isn't called a no-ball either.

It's one thing to be scoring at five runs at over, but it's not all risk-free shots. You do wonder if Australia had held the catch offered by Harry Brook quite where England might be.

Some very selective memories out there when it comes to Jonny Bairstow.

He certainly hasn't had his best series but it was only a year ago that he was scoring runs for fun, including plenty to dig England out of a few holes...

Sean Richard: There is the problem with Bairstow. Gets runs when it's easy, but let's you down when you really need him. Get Foakes in.

Kevin Ticehurst: I can’t see Bairstow being on a plane to India in January for the Test series there, I really can’t.

ZS-NVB: That's the problem with Bairstow. He'll hit 99* when the game is already won (or not...), but he can't put an innings together when we actually need it.
