Will we see a bit more of that intent from Australia after lunch? You'd hope so.

Either way, we haven't got long until we find out. The afternoon session is just a couple of minutes away.

What better way to spend a bit of that time than by watching Joe Root's fabulous catch again?

There was a little bit more aggression shown by Australia late in the session when Steve Smith came in.

The former skipper even hit back-to-back boundaries with a couple of lovely straight drives off Jimmy Anderson...

Bazball might not be the best approach if your only metric is winning. Test cricket is still an entertainment business and without people wanting to watch it, it won't survive. Bazball certainly heads that criteria in my mind.

In this morning session, Jimmy Anderson has averaged 0.675 degrees of swing, a sizeable improvement on his day one average of 0.521. However, his average for this Test as a whole (0.577) is way lower than his previous three Tests this series (0.889, 1.697 and 0.987).

Interestingly, his average speed of 82.82mph is much higher than his previous three Tests (80.90, 81.29 and 81.36).

I don't really want to hear anymore about it. It was horrible.

Marnus Labuschagne's innings was the lowest run rate of 65 more balls in Tests in England since 1994, when Hansie Cronje made 13* off 124. The last time there was a slower innings of 65 or more balls at The Oval was Keith Miller in 1956, scoring 7* off 67.

    Thanks, Callum.

I'll start with a couple of statements:

Firstly, Australia's approach in the morning session is completely logical given the situation they find themselves in in this series. It makes plenty of sense and might even be their best chance of securing a first away Ashes series win since 2001.

Secondly, Australia's approach today has been very dull to watch. Really, really dull.

    Both statements can be true.

Talking of lunch, time for me to go and get some.

Sam Drury will take you through the remainder of lunch and the afternoon session.

It probably can't be any worse than the morning one.

Here's the one wicket that England picked up in the morning session.

It was Marnus Labuschagne and it came via a superb grab from Joe Root.

It is likely to open up more questions about Jonny Bairstow, though.

Australia have reached 100 runs after 47.4 overs, the longest it has taken them in a Test since December 1990 at MCG. It is the longest they've taken to reach 100 in England since 1981.

The elephant was in the room ahead of the fourth Test when I said the pace of Josh Tongue should have been in for James Anderson. It's now a herd of elephants in the same room.

The Australian approach to this game is what will kill Test Cricket. Give me Bazball any day. It's surely the future of the five-day game.

This has been a very ugly innings from Usman Khawaja.

He picks up four with a thick edge, all along the ground but through the slip cordon, before playing and missing with a loose drive.

He's up to 43 off 142 balls though.

    Oh, Steve Smith. Beautiful.

He drives James Anderson back down the ground, between Anderson's left and the stumps, before beating him to the right the following ball.

    Superb strokes.

I think England have bowled as well as they have done all series. It seems to have done more this morning than it did yesterday, it has beaten the bat, Usman Khawaja has been on red alert. The bowlers have been mostly bang on target and virtually nothing has happened, barring one spectacular catch from Joe Root to remove Marnus Labuschagne.
