That's England's session by an absolute mile.
Australia's tail wags to take tourists to slender 12-run lead
Murphy and Cummins put on 49 for ninth wicket
Smith narrowly survives incredibly close run-out on 43, but holes out for 71
Root, Anderson & Broad all in the wickets as Australia fall from 115-2 to 185-7

Very steady stuff from Harry Brook but he's probably not looking as threatening as Jonny Bairstow is trying to make it seem from behind the stumps!
Steve Smith defends the last ball. A maiden over and that's tea.
A brilliant session for England to put themselves well on top.

Ben Stokes does things completely differently. He's brought someone on who Steve Smith would hate to get out to.

I am a bit perplexed by the decision to bowl Harry Brook. It's a very eccentric tactic.

Harry Brook is good at getting batters who average over 50 out. His only Test wicket is Kane Williamson.
One more over, make it count.
Here comes Harry Brook...

A strangled appeal from England as Chris Woakes' last ball swings in and raps Pat Cummins on the front pad.
It's done far too much, though. Not out and we will have time for one more over before tea.

Australia's tail here is a reminder of the value Woakes and Wood bring with the bat as well as the ball getting England to 283. Had they been playing at Lords, England might have got those extra 43 runs...

Edged... and short of third slip.
Good start from Chris Woakes with Pat Cummins prodding at the ball outside off.
Chris Woakes is coming on to bowl what England will hope isn't the last over before tea.
They'll want to squeeze two in but they aren't rushing with Woakes and Ben Stokes having a chat.

Australia just need someone to hang around with Steve Smith so he'll be annoyed with Mitchell Starc's dismissal. That brings Pat Cummins to the crease and he has struggled since England got Mark Wood in the side. This is perfect for England just before tea.

Pat Cummins is in at nine and gets off the mark with a single first ball.
That's the first run he's scored off Mark Wood in this series and he's been dismissed twice.

It was a sort of flail from Mitchell Starc. It wasn't any kind of shot at all. Australia have been going nowhere with Steve Smith playing a lone hand.
Starc c Duckett b Wood 7 (Aus 185-7)
The short ball does the trick for Mark Wood!
Banged in by the England fast bowler, Mitchell Starc tried to take it on but was through the shot far too early.
The ball went up and Ben Duckett came in from long leg to take a simple catch.
It was a nothing shot really from Starc.

Joe Root has 59 Test wickets averaging 44 with the ball in 135 Tests. 22 of them have been against Australia and he averages 37.09 against them.
England have had 11 spin bowlers this millennium who have bowled 30 or more overs against Australia. Only one - Jack Leach - has a better average than Joe Root.
How utterly consistent is Joe Root here... before he puts the brakes on a tad to remove Alex Carey?

I like Joe Root's off-spin. He doesn't bowl many bad balls.

Am I the only one who thinks Joe Root is so underused in Test matches?
David in Great Oakley
Dan Lawrence is on as a sub fielder and shows some fancy footwork to save two runs after Mitchell Starc had cut Joe Root through point.
The third umpire has to have a few looks but decides Lawrence was up in the air when he caught the ball he had flicked up for himself as he tumbled over the rope.

Today is another example of England having a super positive mindset and sticking to their game plan. It really is great to watch.
