Australia feel a long way behind and England have nine overs until the new ball.
Play and a miss from Mitchell Starc as Mark Wood angles the ball across him.
There was a bit of nip as well and the left-hander is fortunate not to have nicked it.
Wood follows up with a bouncer, taken on by Starc and hooked down to fine leg for a single.

Great day for England. Australia deserve everything they are getting for being so boring.
Richard from Letchworth
England won't be too disappointed as Mitchell Starc drives the last ball of the Joe Root over out to deep cover.
That brings him a single to keep him on strike for the start of the Mark Wood over.
Joe Root will carry on after dismissing Alex Carey in his previous over. Look away now, Alex...
Steve Smith is still there for Australia and, if there was any doubt before, it's clear now that he is the key wicket in this innings.
He whips through the leg-side for two but Mitchell Starc had to sprint to get back after good work in the deep.
A single keeps Smith on strike.

The catch from Ben Stokes for the wicket of Alex Carey saw him become the 11th England player to take 100 catches.

Mitchell Starc is the new man in for Australia and blocks the last ball of Joe Root's over.
A wicket for England in the over and something of a bonus, too. They could hardly have believed that Alex Carey would fall for what appeared such an obvious plan!

Ex-Australia bowler on BBC Test Match Special
Alex Carey knew straight away after he hit it. A slog-sweep for six the ball before but he's gone after something wider and found the fielder. Joe Root knew what he was going to do and Carey fell for it. Somebody needs to hang around with Steve Smith now.

Tossed up by Joe Root and it said 'come and have a go at this one' and Alex Carey fell for it.

Six and out!
Tossed up again by Joe Root, that bit wider this time and Alex Carey falls right into the trap.
He drives at it but in the air and Ben Stokes takes the catch low down at short cover.
England are into the bowlers.

Has anyone named this straight fielding position England use off the spinner yet?
Cries of 'catch!' as Alex Carey slog-sweeps Joe Root.
The ball hangs in the air but there is enough on it to carry all the way for six.

Steve Smith was very annoyed at playing and missing at that. You're normally that level of annoyance when you edge it.

I thought there might have been something on that. It came through a little bit quicker. James Anderson with a back of the length delivery and Steve Smith's feet were nowhere. He smashed the ground after that flirt.
So close! Bounce and a little bit of movement away from Jimmy Anderson and Steve Smith fences at it.
Some of the crowd were up thinking there might have been a nick. Sadly for England, there wasn't.
Smith is still furious with himself for playing at it, though. Swishing his bat in frustration before calling for new gloves.
James Anderson pushed the ball a little fuller to Mitchell Marsh and got his rewards. He'll continue into the fourth over of his spell...

Joe Root rattles through another over, round the wicket to both Steve Smith and Alex Carey.
He is providing very little threat but with Moeen Ali injured, it's up to him to give the seamers a rest.
That said, the speed with which he gets through his overs means the rest is quite as long as it could be!
