  1. 'Going one further would have been nice'published at 19:08 British Summer Time 31 July 2023

Australia's Pat Cummins speaking to BBC Sport: "The rhythm of the series was just when you feel like you had a sniff, the opposition came in and vice versa. Wonderful series and wonderful Test match.

"Ashes series always seem to define Aussie and English cricketers and a fitting end to an all-time great and his longevity as a fast bowler, I know it's not easy, big kudos to him.

"Going one further would have been nice but in saying that I think we can be really proud of retaining the Ashes and the way we have played. Winning the World Test Championships on this ground too. It's been a great tour and it's good to retain and have something to show for it.

Favourite moment: "That win in Birmingham but that feels like it was four years ago, that was a special moment. So many wonderful stories, my memory is all fuzzled at the moment."

  4. 'I'm so glad I came back and said yes'published at 19:05 British Summer Time 31 July 2023

England's Moeen Ali speaking on BBC Sport: "Amazing finish and to finish with Broady taking the last wicket, probably the only player to take a six on his last ball and take a wicket on his last ball, amazing and it's a great win.

"It feels amazing. To come back was obviously a little bit daunting because I've never played that well against Australia and it was one of those things when Stokesy asked me I thought: "Why not, I'm going to go into a brillant side and I still believe I can do alright," and it's just great to be back part of this amazing team.

Travis Head wicket: "I feel like I was a bit shorter and then I tried one that was fuller and wider and as soon as it left my hand I knew it was a decent ball on this wicket. It was just that period of four wickets in four overs was just amazing and lifted everybody in the whole ground. It was an amazing atmosphere.

"I'm so glad I came back and said yes. Just from the first day I came back into the changing room with Baz and Stokesy and to play again with Broad and Jimmy and Woody, it's been amazing and I'm chuffed that I can finish with a win against Australia with a bit of a helping hand.

"They brought the best out of me but I am not complaining. I've had a good run and I have really enjoyed playing Test cricket with England and representing everyone in this country. It's been amazing."

  10. 'Most special Ashes experience I have been a part of'published at 18:56 British Summer Time 31 July 2023

Australia's Mitchell Starc, speaking to BBC Sport: "If you want to go out and write your perfect way out, I guess that was it, winning a Test match and taking your final wicket. It's the way to ride it, fair play to that. It's been an incredible career for Broad and to go out that way, really special for him.

"We were going nicely there. Credit to England, they put some good balls in the right areas and we nicked them or weren't good enough. Look, the ebbs and flows of this Ashes series has been incredible to be a part of and to watch and it didn't disappoint.

"It's been the most entertaining and the most special Ashes experience I have been a part of. This has been the closest, most exciting and no doubt most watched series I've been a part of. All the Test match has been really special. It's been a really special couple of months and I'm sure everyone will reflect on that differently but will have a similar sentiment.

"There's no right or wrong in Test cricket, it's been the result. Fair play England have gone about the way they want to approach this Test cricket. Their last challenge will be India away. It's exciting to watch and be involved in. It's been two different game plans and both teams have stuck true to what they wanted to do in this Ashes series."

  12. 'Taking new ball at Edgbaston may be only series regret'published at 18:53 British Summer Time 31 July 2023

More from Stuart Broad speaking to Sky Sports: "I don't have many regrets with cricket. I wouldn't have taken the second new ball at Edgbaston. Throughout the series the new ball has been the hardest time to bowl. We found it hard to create changes after that. If I could turn back the clock for that final hour I'd have maybe stayed with the old ball, stayed heavy and short and see if they'd made a mistake. I had blood in my socks, sweat and I knew the team had put their heart and soul into it and when you lose to a great team like that, but you know you've done everything like that, you've got to hold your head high.

"Everywhere I looked round the ground I could see little pockets of fans with them on. It was a really nice gesture to see headbands all around the crowd. It ended up being a little bit of a superstition after Covid. It really made me smile."

Broad bowled beautifully today, I don't know why he's quitting. He played magnificently. England got that ball moving around, it was a day the ball seamed more than yesterday.

Australia controlled the game at times but this England side have got this knack of fighting back.

  14. Bail change and wicket 'really made me smile' - Broadpublished at 18:50 British Summer Time 31 July 2023

Broad switches bails again before removing Murphy

More from Stuart Broad speaking to Sky Sports: "I like detail, data and I like to research things. I almost need facts and data for me to believe something. That was something that was very evident when I decided to come round the wicket in 2015 and really worked on bowling to left-handers around the wicket. My data wasn't very good so I had to make a change. I did a lot of research into Davey Warner because I found him difficult to bowl at and to try and find a way to dismiss him.

"In Test cricket it is about knowing what your weaknesses are but finding your exact strengths and sticking to them so strongly and not getting knocked away. Test cricket and the whole environment, there's a lot of things trying to knock you off the straight road, but if you can stay on it you'll have a lot of success coming your way. I've found that a lot more in the last 10 years and I've focused solely on what my super strengths are and I've stuck to them in this series."

On the bail change the ball before dismissing Todd Murphy: "If I'd known that 10 years ago I'd have been alright, wouldn't I? Maybe I've made it up because I did think that was an Aussie good luck thing. I'm not sure. The Marnus one really made me smile in the first innings. I had a couple of plays and misses today and it was really frustrating so I thought I'd change them at the bowlers end and see what happens and Todd [Murphy] nicked a decent ball and that really made me smile."

  15. Moeen confirms Test retirementpublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 31 July 2023

Moeen Ali has confirmed on Test Match Special that this will be his last Test match.

He goes out in style, too. He took 3-76 in Australia's innings to finish with 204 Test wickets as well as 3,094 runs - including five centuries - in 68 matches.

The 36-year-old was already retired from red-ball cricket but when Jack Leach was ruled out of the Ashes with a stress fracture at the start of June, Moeen answered England's SOS call.

"I'm so glad I came back and said yes," Moeen said.

"From the first day I came back into the changing room with Baz and Stokesy and to play again with Broad and Jimmy and Woody, it's been amazing and I'm chuffed that I can finish with a win against Australia with a bit of a helping hand.

"I've had a good run and I have really enjoyed playing Test cricket with England and representing everyone in this country. It's been amazing."

Broad hits last ball in Test cricket for six

More from Stuart Broad speaking to Sky Sports: "The six was the only ball I've middled all year! I was quite happy that went for six.

"I even had a little bail change, did you see that? I've always bowling at left-handers so to finish my last spell at a few left-handers and trying to move the ball away was nice. I thought the pitch quickened up a little bit after the rain and it just zipped through a bit more.

"A special mention to Moeen, he's not officially announced he's moving on, but we've played a lot together and he's been such a special friend. To put that performance in to help England win an Ashes Test match will be a dream come true for him."

  19. 'Pretty cool' to end with a wicketpublished at 18:40 British Summer Time 31 July 2023

Stuart Broad speaking to Sky Sports: "It was absolutely wonderful. I thought Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali set the tone absolutely unbelievably. Woakesy picked up a couple of wickets, particularly Steve Smith, who has just been a wonderful player to play against all these years.

"Once we got a couple we really started to believe. The crowd were unbelievable. It was so loud and we just jumped on the back of that. To contribute to the team with two wickets is very special.

"When you make that decision you wonder what your last ball will be so to take a wicket to win an Ashes Test match is pretty cool."
