The Australians have just gathered for one big huddle on the outfield with all of the players and staff.

Andrew McDonald was doing the speaking but, after some applause, has handed over to Usman Khawaja. Interesting...

As there are likely to be 7-8 decent batters in each team I think that will bump up the average a bit. So my guess is 23.

    Paul in Lincoln

I'll guess 18.7 for the DailyZaltzQuiz

    Rohan in Birmingham

Well, Bradman drags it down of course but 18.5.

Good question for the Zaltzquiz… I reckon 12.

    Charlie in Bristol

    I'm going for 16.4...

    Adam at The Oval

Daily ZaltzQuiz - I think sport isn't as sentimental as we'd like to think. The average score in a batsman's final innings will be exactly the same as the average score for all batsmen in all Tests. So assuming the average innings is 300 runs then I suggest the average score will be 30. (300 divided by 10, accounting for a stranded batsman's average benefiting from a not out)

As we edge closer to the start of play, the players are warming up and taking a quick look at the pitch.

Steve Smith, bat in hand (shock), is chatting away with Joe Root while Jonny Bairstow goes through some keeping drills.

It's not raining at The Oval, but it looks pretty grey and soggy. Not quite the cricket weather you'd expect on the last day of July.

For those of you who may have missed the question earlier, here's the final instalment of Andy Zaltzman's daily Ashes quiz.

    It's a belter, too:

Stuart Broad’s final act with the bat in Test was to plank Mitchell Starc into the stands for his 55th six. He finished 8 not out.

What is the average score of men’s Test players in their final Test innings?

Get your guesses in, and we'll reveal the answer shortly before the start of play.

I think it would be quite low. I’m going with 19.7.

    Tony in Aberdeen

    Daily quiz answer, 19.4.

    Ian in Canterbury

ZaltzQuiz: For every Alastair Cook (final innings of 147) or Jason Gillespie (final innings an unbeaten double century), there will be many more who just faded out or who were bowlers anyway, so I’m going to guess 17.5.

In The Australian, external, Gideon Haigh sets up day five's prospects.

He also questions the tactics of England's batting late on day three.

"The day began with an air of a benefit gig for Stuart Broad," writes Haigh.

"Still, when James Anderson became the last wicket, there was just the slightest feeling that England had left Australia something to grasp at by Bazballing away their last five wickets for 35 in nine overs.

"Sunday’s 110-run partnership of Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow should really have put this match beyond the visitors’ reach; why such haste at the back end of England’s innings when there was more than two days’ cricket to go?"

If Bradman is anything to go on - average must be around 18-20.

Archie in the JM Finn Stand

ZaltQuiz: Most batters’ last innings will be in 3rd / 4th innings where averages are lower and will be artificially lowered by the number of batters who are dropped after failing. I think it is lower than people think and will go for a paltry 15.

In The Guardian, external, Barney Ronay questions the timing of Stuart Broad's retirement announcement.

"Why not just retire the day after the series ends? It is hard to imagine a more distracting way of doing this, a day of potentially era-defining Test cricket recast as the launch of a new media brand.

"There will be cries that one of England’s great Test bowlers needs a chance to wave goodbye. But why? This is not the Love Island finale. It’s a brilliantly engaging Test series with a knife-edge finish to come. Spare us the Viking funeral, just for now."

    DailyZaltzQuiz answer: 29.

    Nico in London

ZaltsQuiz: A wild guess but they won't all be batters or do well so i think 13.7.

    Mark in Abingdon

Daily Zaltz Quiz - I think this will be lower than most people think. I reckon a high percentage of players play their last innings after being dropped never to be picked again, plus a decent number of those players will be bowlers. I reckon it's an unlucky 13.

  20. Day four in statspublished at 09:08 British Summer Time 31 July 2023

The game is nicely balanced and it is difficult to tell which team will be happier - but what do the numbers say?

Here are some talking points from day four according to analysts CricViz.

    1. Usman Khawaja's change in intent was a key factor in the day's play. He played 34% attacking shots in Australia's second innings compared to a significantly lower 16% in the first innings.

    2. Khawaja & David Warner's opening wicket stand of 135* is the first 100+ partnership for Australia in England since Warner and Chris Rogers managed 110 at The Oval on 20 August 2015.

    3. England's WinViz dropped from 80% at the start of the day to 46% at the close of play.
