for Wayne Madsenpublished at 12:25 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Yorkshire 297 v Derbyshire 139-3

A legside gift from Matthew Revis and Wayne Madsen helps himself to the four runs he needs to reach his half century.

It is the 82nd of his long first-class career and this one has come off 67 balls.

  3. Postpublished at 12:24 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Hants 308 v Somerset 28-1

James Vince turns to spin after just nine overs of Somerset's reply, and why wouldn't you when your premier tweaker is Liam Dawson? He's having a decent game so far.

His second delivery turns and bounces past Tom Abell's outside edge, which results in a series of 'oohs' and 'ahhs' from the close fielders.

  4. Postpublished at 12:22 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Surrey 396 v Warwicks 23-2

As Mel Farrell regales listeners with tales of interviewing Curtly Ambrose and Richie Richardson in Antigua, another West Indian, Kraigg Brathwaite, whips Kemar Roach through mid-wicket for the first boundary of his innings.

Appropriately, it's Caribbean-style weather in Kennington.

  5. wicket

WICKET Ingram c Libby b Van Beek 30published at 12:18 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Worcs 284 v Glamorgan 76-5

Colin Ingram has been the standout batter for Glamorgan today, but his promising innings ends on 30.

He flashes at one outside off-stump from Logan van Beek, and Jake Libby does the rest.

It's a first Championship wicket for the Dutchman, and Worcestershire are well on top now.

  6. 100 runs

up for Essexpublished at 12:18 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Essex 101-0 v Middlesex

Spin at both ends for Middlesex with Luke Hollman and Josh de Caires bowling in tandem.

This is Chelmsford on day one, not Hyderabad or Colombo!

A Hollman no-ball sees the Essex score move into three figures.

  7. Lees in the runs once againpublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Durham 103-1 v Sussex 266

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Alex Lees is enjoying a fine run of form. He's on 59 today and that means he's scored 758 runs in his last seven FC innings.

This is the ninth time he has reached 50 in the championship this season. He's converted four of those to centuries. He's the leading run-maker in Division Two by some distance.

Having lost Michael Jones for six, in the first over of the day, Durham have recovered nicely. Lees has added 97 with skipper Scott Borthwick, who has 35.

It is a lovely, warm day in CLS. We believe the temperature record for 4 September will be broken today. It is a great day to make runs while the sun shines.

  8. 50 runs

for Josh Bohannonpublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Northants 232 v Lancashire 121-4

Lancashire's leading run scorer in the Championship has another 50 to his name - this effort coming off 106 balls.

It's his fifth of the summer to go with two centuries.

And he is holding this first innings together for the Red Rose.

  9. dropped catch

Postpublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Worcs 284 v Glamorgan 67-4

Kiran Carlson is living dangerously early on here.

A thick outside edge evades the slips and runs away for four, before a similar shot sees him dropped by Jake Libby from the very next ball.

It was away to his right, but Libby will be disappointed that he didn't cling on.

  10. wicket

WICKET Barnard b Roach 5published at 12:11 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Surrey 396 v Warwicks 14-2

Kemar Roach bowls Ed BarnardImage source, Rex Features

Ed Barnard bowled four Surrey batters during their first innings so he knows what that feels like - but he didn't help his own cause by not playing a shot at an angled delivery.

The Warwickshire all-rounder's free-scoring One-Day Cup form is just a memory - for now - as Kemar Roach strikes for the Division One leaders.

They are 166-5 after 47 overs with One-Day Cup star Wiaan Mulder seven not out and Louis Kimber on nine.

The visitors were all out for 159 on day one.

    Essex 92-0 v Middlesex

Sir Alastair Cook guides one through the offside for a single and that is a very pleasing half-century for the former England captain.

Just the 124th of his first class career - this one off 89 balls.

  13. wicket

WICKET Northeast c Libby b Pennington 7published at 12:07 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Worcs 284 v Glamorgan 62-4

Sam Northeast got a life on five, but can't make the most of it, edging Dillon Pennington to Jake Libby in the cordon.

At the other end, Colin Ingram has 28, and he is joined in the middle by Kiran Carlson.

  14. 'British Embassy may play part in title and relegation'published at 12:06 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Essex 91-0 v Middlesex

    Kevin Hand
    BBC Radio London

In what feels like a pre-war Wisden match report, it's quite possible that the British Embassy in Delhi may well play a large part in both the County Championship title and relegation from Division One this year.

Middlesex were expecting to counter the threat of Essex's spinner Simon Harmer with the India off spinner Jayant Yadav at Chelmsford this week.

However despite assurances of monies paid by Middlesex to "expedite" the process, the office didn't release the passport on Friday as planned and Yadav has had to wait until this week to collect it.

As a result, the hosts are now heavy favourites - most especially having won the toss and the visitors will now have to bat last.

The two main rivals of these counties will have a very close eye on this match and indeed will hope for victories for their near neighbours.

Surrey are top of Division One and, with Essex the only team that can realistically stop them winning the title, they will be cheering on Middlesex.

Kent meantime are second bottom, with Middlesex one place above them, and will hope Harmer and co come out on top in this round.

  15. Postpublished at 12:04 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Surrey 396 v Warwicks 9-1

Kemar Roach has a leg gully in place for West Indies team-mate Kraigg Brathwaite.

A couple of singles, then Roach rips one past the outside edge of Brathwaite's bat.

    Near thing.

  16. wicket

WICKET Rhodes b Worrall 7published at 11:57 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Surrey 396 v Warwicks 7-1

A magnificent inswinger by Dan Worrall and Surrey have their first Warwickshire wicket.

Will Rhodes appeared to be caught in two minds there, but decided not to play a shot and his off stump was spreadeagled.

Not the start the Bears needed.

Ed Barnard is in at three after scoring 616 runs as an opener in the One-Day Cup.

  17. wicket

WICKET Dickson c Vince b Barker 1published at 11:56 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Hants 308 v Somerset 3-1

A brilliant grab from James Vince spells the end of Sean Dickson!

Keith Barker is round the wicket to Dickson, gets one to hold its line, and Vince dives full length away to his right at third slip.

Superb stuff from the Hampshire skipper and Tom Abell is in early.

  18. 50 runs

for Alex Leespublished at 11:52 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Durham 72-1 v Sussex 266

    Alex LeesImage source, Getty Images

Easy as you like, Alex Lees pushes Jack Carson for a single and reaches a 72-ball half-century.

It's the ninth time he has gone past 50 in a prolific season for the Division Two leaders.

  19. Postpublished at 11:51 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Surrey 396 v Warwicks 4-0

Game on at The Oval as Will Rhodes and new signing Kraigg Brathwaite come out to start Warwickshire's first innings.

Kemar Roach will bowl the first over and Rhodes slashes his third delivery away for four.

  20. Division Two updatepublished at 11:50 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

A mini-collapse at Leicester where the home side are now 157-5, but only two behind Gloucestershire's first innings score.

Rishi Patel became Luke Charlesworth's first Championship victim, caught at slip by the bowler's brother Ben for 73.

And Umar Amin followed for a duck in the next over, edging Zaman Akhter to second slip as he tried to drive.
