  1. Division Two updatepublished at 11:16 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

Rishi Patel is up and running for the day at Leicester, punching a boundary off the back foot to advance to 64 not out. The home side are 138-2 after 35 overs against Gloucestershire, now just 21 behind.

Mitch Wagstaff eases George Hill through the covers at Scarborough and he is 41 not out in Derbyshire's 71-2 against Yorkshire.

  2. Brooks can still do 'good job'published at 11:13 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Hants 301-9 v Somerset

Once more Lewis Gregory and Jack Brooks have bowled impressively in tandem, claiming a wicket each this morning.

Brooks picked up the prize wicket of Liam Dawson with a swinging full delivery - at 39, his future looks uncertain as he's out of contract at the end of the season.

He may have lost a little pace but he gets the ball to swing away from the right hander and cuts his fingers down the seam to get the ball to bite into the playing surface to produce the off-cutter.

This still skilful bowler will do a good job for someone. One or two counties should be queuing up for his signature.

  3. 300 runs

up for Hampshirepublished at 11:12 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Hants 301-9 v Somerset

Kyle Abbott is going to play his shots now.

He slashes hard at a wide one from Lewis Gregory, which skews away down to third man for four, before he stands tall and belts Gregory back down the ground for another boundary.

It takes Hampshire past 300 and earns them a second batting point.

  4. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 11:09 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Surrey 361-8 v Warwicks

There's Ed Barnard's sixth wicket - no, he drops a return catch presented to him by Dan Worrall. No-one else to blame there.

Worrall carves the next for four and then skies one into wide-open spaces and adds a single. Riding his luck here.

  5. wicket

WICKET Dawson lbw b Brooks 115published at 11:07 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Hants 293-9 v Somerset

Full and swinging from Jack Brooks, which catches Liam Dawson slightly by surprise.

The Hampshire man falls over a bit, is hit on the pad, and the umpire's finger goes up after a massive appeal.

I think that might have been sliding down personally, but Dawson is out, and an excellent knock comes to an end.

  6. wicket

WICKET Harris lbw b Pennington 17published at 11:05 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Worcs 284 v Glamorgan 27-3

Glamorgan are in real bother now!

James Harris had looked in decent touch until this point, but he's pinned bang in front by Dillon Pennington, and has to go.

Sam Northeast joins Colin Ingram in the middle with the visitors in desperate need of a partnership.

  7. wicket

WICKET Lawes run out 2published at 11:04 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Surrey 357-8 v Warwicks

A bonus run out for Warwickshire and Surrey's first innings is in freefall.

Ben Foakes plays to mid-off, thinks about a single, both he and Tom Lawes end up mid-pitch and the latter is run out by Danny Briggs' direct hit at the bowler's end.

Foakes punches the back of his bat in annoyance. That's two run outs in this innings he has been involved in.

  8. Spin alreadypublished at 11:04 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Essex 37-0 v Middlesex

A sign of the Essex start and probably the conditions, but Middlesex have turned to spin already.

Josh de Caires begins with a maiden to Sir Alastair Cook.

  9. Division Two updatepublished at 11:02 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

We have had half an hour's play at Leicester and Rishi Patel has still not scored his first run of the day against Gloucestershire.

Leicestershire won't care about that, though, as long as he stays there - they are 123-2 in the 32nd over.

A tidy Jordan Thompson over costs him just a single and Derbyshire are 60-2 after 24, having bowled out Yorkshire for 297 on day one.

  10. wicket

WICKET Ul Hassan c Roderick b Leach 5published at 10:59 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Worcs 284 v Glamorgan 23-2

Joe Leach has two, and this is an absolute peach.

Angled in at Zain ul Hassan from round the wicket, it seams away off the pitch, and finds the outside edge on its way through to Gareth Roderick.

  11. wicket

WICKET Barker c Rew b Gregory 22published at 10:56 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Hants 293-8 v Somerset

Lewis Gregory gets one to nip back at Keith Barker, who gets a little bit stuck on the crease, and feathers an inside edge through to James Rew.

The young Somerset keeper takes a good catch away to his right, and Hampshire are eight down.

Liam Dawson is joined in the middle by Kyle Abbott.

  12. for Ed Barnardpublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Surrey 355-7 v Warwicks

Ed Barnard strikes again and that's his first five-for for Warwickshire.

Another fine delivery takes the edge of Jamie Overton's bat and Will Rhodes, the sole slip, takes the catch moving to his left.

Tom Lawes is in at number nine for Surrey, whose hopes of a total approaching or beyond 500 have taken a nosedive thanks to Barnard's efforts.

  13. 6 runs

Third batting point for Surreypublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Surrey 354-6 v Warwicks

Surrey's total moves past 350 as Jamie Overton decides that a bit of aggression is called for an launches Chris Rushworth for six. It's the first of the game.

Ben Foakes is still there at the other end, having added a couple to his overnight 112 not out.

  14. wicket

WICKET Williams c Gay b Sanderson 5published at 10:54 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Northants 232 v Lancashire 62-3

Will Williams will not be hanging around any longer this morning.

Ben Sanderson gets one to bounce on the night watchman and Williams can only guide it straight to second slip.

Williams goes for five off 29 balls and Lancashire are in a spot of bother.

  15. No September nightmares for Essex pairpublished at 10:53 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Essex 32-0 v Middlesex

These 10.30 September starts are usually a nightmare for opening batters.

Not here as the sun is blazing down at Chelmsford and Nick Browne and Sir Alastair Cook are taking advantage.

Six overs, six boundaries and Essex going along at more than five an over.

  16. Postpublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Hants 292-7 v Somerset

Liam Dawson batted beautifully yesterday to lead the Hampshire fightback, and he looks in the mood for more runs this morning.

Twice in the over he guides Lewis Gregory through the off-side for a couple, manipulating the field with ease.

The former England all-rounder moves to 115.

  18. Postpublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Durham 19-1 v Sussex 266

Alex Lees appears to have taken an outside off stump guard but that method seems to be working as he hits three quality boundaries in the space of four balls in the same Ari Karvelas over.

A cover drive, punch off the back foot and off drive all reach the rope and Lees is 13 not out.

  19. Postpublished at 10:47 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

    Northants 232 v Lancashire 62-2

A boundary apiece for Josh Bohannon and Will Williams to get the Lancashire score up and running on day two.

Williams is in as night-watchman for Lancashire.

Northants need to be careful - Williams made 61 off 220 balls in that position against Surrey at The Oval in June as the Red Rose inflicted the only defeat of the season on the champions.

  20. Division Two updatepublished at 10:44 British Summer Time 4 September 2023

Derbyshire have lost an early wicket at Scarborough, with Brooke Guest caught behind off Jordan Thompson for 13. They are 48-2 in the 20th over, replying to Yorkshire's 297 all out.

Two fours in three balls for Leicestershire's Colin Ackermann off Dom Goodman and they are 115-2 after 27 overs - just 44 in arrears. Rishi Patel has yet to add to his 60 not out.
