up for Northantspublished at 17:46 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Northants 232 & 205-5 v Lancashire 524

Seven runs in four deliveries from Lewis McManus, purely to make this commentator look silly, one presumes, has taken Northants firstly within 100 of the Lancashire total and now past 200.

Saif Zaib is on 35 and the deficit is down to 87.

    Into the final two overs.

  2. Postpublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 225-7

We know very little about the batting credentials of Ari Karvelas.

He tries to pull a short one from Matthew Potts and the ball flies off the top edge and over the keeper for four.

Definitely not where he intended it to go.

  3. Postpublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 220-7

Bas de Leede sprints in again but his first delivery is wayward and Fynn Hudson-Prentice flicks it past the diving keeper for four.

Just a single from the rest of the over and Sussex need 19 runs to clear the deficit.

  4. 100 runs

up for Essexpublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Essex 304 & 102-1 v Middlesex 179

Shadows are very long at Chelmsford. Into the final three overs of the day.

Alastair Cook has 43 from 86 deliveries while Tom Westley is on 16 from 43 after a streaky edge for four off Ethan Bamber to bring the milestone up.

The lead is 227 on a pitch which is looking increasingly placid.

  5. 50 runs

for Sean Dicksonpublished at 17:35 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Somerset 88-2 v Hants - target 502

Tom Prest tosses one up outside off stump, and Sean Dickson smashes it on the up through the covers to go to his third Championship 50 of the season.

WICKET Carson b de Leede 8published at 17:29 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 214-7

What a day Bas de Leede is having?

A century earlier in the day and he now responds to being square cut for four by Jack Carson with a perfect yorker to claim his second wicket.

Sussex need another 25 to avoid an innings defeat. There are another nine overs scheduled - but maybe the additional half-hour will be needed.

  9. Postpublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Derbys 59-1 v Yorks - target 571

It's taken some time to arrive but the first boundary of Brooke Guest's innings proves worth the wait as he drills it back past bowler Matthew Revis. Guest is 16 not out and there are three overs to go.

  10. wicket

WICKET Carter lbw de Leede 80published at 17:19 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 202-6

Seven half-centuries for Oli Carter this season - still no hundred.

He plays all around a full-length delivery from Bas de Leede and his fine 153-ball innings comes to an end.

Sussex are 37 behind as Jack Carson comes out to bat with 11 overs remaining to stumps.

Matthew Revis hit a century for Yorkshire earlier this afternoon, what can he do with the ball?

Brooke Guest collects a single from his first delivery and Harry Came clips a leg-stump half-volley away for four.

Five overs to come after this one.

  13. dropped catch

Postpublished at 17:07 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 198-5

Was that a dropped catch? Technically, yes.

George Drissell found the edge of Fynn Hudson-Prentice's bat but first slip only had a second to react and deflected it away for four runs.

  14. ESSEX LEAD UP TO 200published at 17:06 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Essex 304 & 75-1 v Middlesex 179

He is now 76 not out and his side have cut the deficit to 53 runs. There are still 17 overs to go, though.

  16. Postpublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

Matt Parkinson dismisses Cheteshwar PujaraImage source, Getty Images

Cheteshwar Pujara made only four in the Sussex first innings, so it was unlikely he would fail again - and he didn't.

Sussex were 70-4 and trailing by 169 when he was joined in the middle by Oli Carter. Both were approaching their 50s by tea, but there were signs Pujara was becoming becalmed by then as his scoring rate began to dry up.

He managed only two more runs in the nine overs after the break before falling lbw to Matt Parkinson for 51 from one that stayed low.

It was Parkinson's sixth wicket of the game. He's set to leave Durham after this and seems set for Kent before the end of the season. He's joining them full-time next year anyway.

At five down Sussex have another 21 overs to see out today.

  18. Postpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Derbys 32-1 v Yorks - target 571

A maiden from Dom Bess to Brooke Guest and there are 12 overs left in the day's play at Scarbados.

Guest has five and Harry Came is 18 not out and Derbyshire need these two to be walking off together at the close.

    Northants 232 & 165-5 v Lancashire 524

Sam Whiteman's season is over. He's wafted his bat at a wide one from Will Williams and chopped onto off-stump.

719 runs for Northamptonshire this summer and back-to-back fifties to finish his spell at Wantage Road.

The deficit is down to 127 but only five wickets remain.

Lewis McManus joins Saif Zaib in the middle.

    WICKET Browne c Simpson b Roland-Jones 35published at 16:45 British Summer Time 5 September 2023

    Essex 304 & 64-1 v Middlesex 179

Nick Browne had looked so good but he's prodded outside off and nicked behind for John Simpson to take a good catch down to his left.

Breakthrough for Middlesex, who are 189 in arrears.

Tom Westley joins Alastair Cook, who has 25.
