Brilliant stuff from Essex, who have their third.

It's a really good delivery from Umesh Yadav, angled across the left-handed Jack Davies, and he nicks it to Alastair Cook at first slip.

Maybe we will get a result today.

The game is over now at Scarborough - with Yorkshire beating Derbyshire - but we mentioned earlier about a sea fret descending on the North Marine Road ground on this otherwise most glorious of days. Weather enthusiasts among you may be interested in these pics.

    Middlesex 37-2 v Essex - target 445

Umesh Yadav replaces Sam Cook, and Jack Davies can only play out a maiden - a good start from the Indian quick.

Hampshire's win at Southampton means that this is the last game standing in either division, partly down to the fact that it started a day later than the others.

The fact that it's only day three at Chelmsford may have briefly slipped my mind earlier...

  4. HAMPSHIRE BEAT SOMERSET BY 185 RUNSpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 6 September 2023
    Breaking

    Hampshire 308 & 303-3 dec v Somerset 137 & 316

Liam Dawson has four wickets and Hampshire have a fifth Divsion One win of the season.

Dawson pins Shoaib Bashir in front for seven. Ben Green finishes unbeaten on 31.

Dawson adds seven match wickets to his first-innings century, while Nick Gubbins cracked an unbeaten ton to set up the win in the second innings.

The century-stand between Tom Kohler-Cadmore and James Rew briefly kept the outcome in the balance but when Tom Prest bowled TKC out of the rough for 84 to land his maiden first-class wicket, the result was never in doubt.

    Somerset 313-9 v Hampshire - target 502

Somerset seem content to let Liam Dawson bowl maidens and then pick-off the looser balls from Tom Prest at the other end to tick the scoreboard over.

Shout from the corden as Prest hits Shoaib Bashir on the knee roll, but nothing doing.

Ben Green has hit six fours and has 28 from 59 balls.

  6. wicket

WICKET Cracknell lbw b Harmer 12published at 15:11 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Middlesex 36-2 v Essex - target 445

Two for Essex, and two for Simon Harmer!

Joe Cracknell goes back to a ball that keeps low, and that is about as plumb as they come.

Jack Davies joins Mark Stoneman in the middle.

  7. Postpublished at 15:03 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Middlesex 26-1 v Essex - target 445

Sam Cook has got the ball on a string at Chelmsford.

The Essex seamer beats Mark Stoneman's outside edge three times in his latest over, and can scarcely believe that he hasn't picked up his fourth wicket of the match.

up for Somersetpublished at 14:56 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Somerset 300-9 v Hampshire - target 502

Ben Green edges a short one from Mohammad Abbas to the fence through backward point... a little uppish as the ball spat up at him on the back foot but they all count.

202 required... or 40 overs to negotiate.

Simon Harmer takes a wicketImage source, Rex Features

A wonderful catch from Dan Lawrence sees Essex make the breakthrough!

Simon Harmer offers up a full toss which Sam Robson puts away for four, but the South African spinner finds his length next ball, and Robson can only turn it round the corner to leg slip, where Lawrence springs away to his left and clings on.

  10. wicket

WICKET Brooks b Dawson 6published at 14:49 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Somerset 292-9 v Hampshire - target 502

Liam Dawson has got this one to straighten up considerably and he's bowled Jack Brooks past his defences. The left-armer has 3-78 and six for the match.

Shoaib Bashir is the last man. Hampshire are eyeing a mammoth win.

  11. Postpublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Middlesex 18-0 v Essex - target 445

Sam Robson guides two deliveries in a row from Jamie Porter down to deep third for successive boundaries.

They weren't bad balls, by any stretch, just well played by the former England opener.

  12. Postpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Somerset 292-8 v Hampshire - target 502

13 off the latest Kyle Abbott over, with half his deliveries finding the rope.

Not really the plan for Hampshire. The less time they spend on the field on a sweltering day like this the better.

The spinners are coming back after six overs of pace with the new ball.

  13. De Caires success 'ominous' for Middlesexpublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Essex 304 & 319-7 dec v Middlesex 179 & 7-0

    Kevin Hand
    BBC Radio London

Essex's batters have charged towards a declaration and a bowl at Middlesex before tea.

They'll have 18 overs at the visitors before the interval with a target of 445 set.

Try as they might, Middlesex were unable to keep control of the hosts' second innings. Josh de Caires did complete a 10-fer having taken eight wickets in the first innings and appeared to carry more threat in the second dig.

That however is ominous for the Middlesex batters, who kept Simon Harmer at bay in the first innings and now face a monumental task in the second.

Jamie Porter and Sam Cook have already dealt out substantial damage to the Middlesex top order this year and are now attempting to do the same from the off once more.

Beautiful back-foot uppercut from Jack Brooks, flashing a short ball from Kyle Abbott through point for a boundary.

54 more of those and Somerset are home and dry.

  15. Postpublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Middlesex 6-0 v Essex - target 445

It's been a dramatic start to the Midlesex innings!

Sam Robson square drives Jamie Porter's first delivery to the boundary for four, before surviving a huge appeal for caught behind two balls later.

  16. wicket

WICKET Wagner b Abbott 4published at 14:30 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Somerset 278-8 v Hampshire - target 502

Bowled him through the gate - via an inside edge by the looks of it.

As in his previous over, Kyle Abbott has responded to being hit for a boundary by taking a wicket with the next delivery.

Neil Wagner pushes outside off but has his off-stump rattled after scoring four from four balls.

Jack Brooks is the new man, needing 224 to win.

  17. Declarationpublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Essex 304 & 319-7 dec v Middlesex 179

Tom Westley decides that Essex have enough of a lead, and so Middlesex are set a notional target of 445 for victory.

Essex need 10 wickets in a day and a half.

  18. wicket

WICKET Gregory c Brown b Abbott 34published at 14:19 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Somerset 274-7 v Hampshire - target 502

    Ah.

Kyle Abbott beats Lewis Gregory for pace from the fourth ball of the over, Gregory jams his bat down but can only send a faint edge through to Ben Brown.

Neil Wagner is the new man. Somerset certainly need a composed performance here.

  19. new ball

New ball taken by Hampshirepublished at 14:19 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Somerset 274-6 v Hampshire - target 502

James Vince has opted to take the new cherry and thrown it to Kyle Abbott.

After a dot to start, Lewis Gregory cracks the new ball for back-to-back boundaries... Somerset had not scored a run in the previous two overs.

  20. YORKSHIRE BEAT DERBYSHIRE BY 277 RUNSpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 6 September 2023
    Breaking

    Yorkshire 297 & 520-9 dec v Derbyshire 247 & 293

Yorkshire complete a seasonal double over Derbyshire - the only team they have beaten - as Jonny Tattersall stumps Anuj Dal off Dom Bess.

There was plenty of entertainment this morning supplied by Wayne Madsen, who played some great shots in his 93.

And Zak Chappell (33) and Dal (38) added 78 for the eight wicket either side of lunch before the Derbyshire second innings went into terminal decline.

Dom Bess finishes with 4-79 for Yorkshire and day three centurion Matthew Revis claims 3-66.
