Mohammad Abbas thunders in and manages to get one to nip back, squeezing past the edge of Sean Dickson's back foot defence to uproot off-stump.

Dickson's eye-catching 104-ball stay is over. Tom Kohler-Cadmore strides out to join Andy Umeed.

A useful early breathrough for the hosts.

Pace to start the day for Hampshire, Kyle Abbott and Mo Abbas taking the opening two overs. Surely won't be too long before we see Liam Dawson, though.

Andy Umeed has flashed an edge past the slips and through the vacant gully area for a boundary so at least the Somserset required total begins with a curly number.

    They need 396.

    Derbys 69-1 v Yorks - target 572

Ben Coad bowling to Brooke Guest first up with four slips in place.

His third delivery is cracked away square for four.

Matthew Potts will open the bowling for Durham. He has 3-51 so far.

Fynn Hudson-Prentice takes a single from his second delivery and the Sussex lead is 25.

FHP clearly has confidence in number 11 Henry Crcombe.

  7. Postpublished at 10:27 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 263-9

BBC Sussex commentator Adrian Harms has reminded everyone on social media this morning of the 10th-wicket stand of 164 between Ollie Robinson - now England's Ollie Robinson - and the late Matt Hobden against Durham at the Riverside in 2015.

Should Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Henry Crocombe equal that, Sussex would set Durham a target of 176.

Durham followers with good memories will be very much hoping that history does not repeat itself.

Essex paceman Jamie Porter believes he may be bowling better than at any time in his career after taking 6-34 as Middlesex were all out for 179 on day two at Chelmsford.

Porter now has 53 first-class wickets this season - and 462 in his career - but although Essex lead by 229, they know they must win the game to stay in touch with Division One leaders Surrey.

"The last two years have been disappointing personally. Last year, I struggled with my body and I paid the price for that," Porter said.

"I feel that this year is the best all-round version I’ve felt with myself in my career. This is probably the most satisfying season for me so far because of all the work I put in last winter."

Hampshire's Nick Gubbins expects team-mate Liam Dawson to have a key role as they look to complete victory over Somerset on the final day at the Ageas Bowl.

He hit an unbeaten 139 as the home side built a 500+ lead before declaring and spinner Dawson then took one of two Somerset wickets to fall in the final session.

“We had a good first two days but it was important for us to pile on the runs and keep them out in the heat," said Gubbins.

“It is pretty attritional to bat on that. It feels like Daws is getting more turn than [Somerset's Shoaib] Bashir – it is more suited to him, so I think he’ll be a threat."

Following Glamorgan's defeat by Worcestershire yesterday, Sussex are the last unbeaten team in this year's Championship.

Barring an unexpected deluge or extraordinary events on the field, that situation will not last long today as Division Two leaders Durham look to complete their sixth win of the season.

It looked like they would finish the job on day three, thanks in part to a century and three wickets from Bas de Leede, but Sussex managed to survive until stumps - but their lead is only 24.

"The final wicket can always smash a few runs and make it an even harder chase for us," said de Leede. "But, with the new ball due and the class of Potts and Ben Raine, we can try and get it as early as we can, knock off the runs, and pick up the points."

  12. Northants praise Whiteman's 'big contribution'published at 10:11 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

Northants coach Chris Liddle praised the efforts of Sam Whiteman after the Australian signed off with a second half-century of the game against Lancashire.

In his final appearance for the club before returning home, Whiteman passed 700 runs for the season by adding 54 to his 79 in the first innings, but they still need to score another 81 to make the visitors bat again.

"He’s had some tough games where he's had to bat under lights, it's been gloomy, and it's done quite a bit. He’s developed a method to combat the red Dukes (ball)," Liddle said.

"He's come from Perth to Wantage Road and it's a bit different, so he's worked out a way of scoring. I think he deserved to put a big contribution into this game with the application he showed."

  13. 'Good areas' can seal Yorkshire win - Revispublished at 10:08 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

Despite having been docked 48 points in July for their handling of the Rafiq racism scandal, Yorkshire could still avoid finishing bottom of the Division Two table.

Victory over Derbyshire would put them only 15 points behind their opponents at Scarborough - and 14 behind Gloucestershire - with three games still to play.

Matthew Revis hit his second Championship hundred of the season on day three as they built a 571-run lead before declaring.

"The way we bowled in the first innings on the second day, if we can keep bowling those areas, we've got more than enough skill to get them out," he told BBC West Yorkshire Sport.

  14. Weather outlookpublished at 10:05 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

Following Surrey's win yesterday, the onus is now on Essex to do likewise in their game against Middlesex and keep the County Championship title race alive.

Victory would leave them 18 points behind, but the gap would be 29 should they only manage a draw, with just two more games to play.

In Division Two, Durham look set fair for another win today, which would leave them requiring a maximum of five points from their final two fixtures to be certain of promotion.

Welcome to our coverage of five games. Play starts at 10.30.
