  2. The battle to avoid the droppublished at 10:18 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

With 72 points still on offer for Division One's bottom two clubs Kent and Northamptonshire, there are still technically seven sides involved in the relegation struggle.

The odds are that fourth-placed Lancashire (134 pts), fifth-placed Warwickshire (130 pts) and sixth-placed Somerset (128 pts, having played one game more, all ought to be all right.

With two to go down, seventh-placed Nottinghamshire (114 pts) also have a relatively comfortable cushion, with 27 points separating them eighth-placed Middlesex (87 pts).

The fact that bottom club Northants (61 pts) have won only one four-day game in 11 attempts this season also does not lend itself to any wild, speculative theory that they might suddenly come from nowhere to win their last three matches.

But ninth-placed Kent (81 pts) play two of their final three games at home, starting against Notts, which gives them hope. And both Northants and Middlesex may feel encouraged that they are hopelessly out-of-form Warwickshire's next two opponents.

How different might the table look when the final round of games commence on Tuesday fortnight if the Bears lose their next two?

  3. Good Morning and Welcomepublished at 10:15 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

Welcome back to the County Championship . . . to the week before the week before the final week of the season.

No title issues on the agenda today, with both Division One leaders Surrey, the reigning champions, and second-placed Essex sitting out this round of fixtures.

But there are still the key issues of who goes up and who goes down. And that may all become a little bit clearer over the next four days.

In the week that Leicestershire have their first limited-overs final in 22 years to prepare for, Saturday's One-Day Cup final against Hampshire at Trent Bridge, the rejuvenated Foxes are still very much in the Divison Two promotion too.

If they beat Sussex at Hove this week, that would really put the pressure on second-placed Worcestershire in the battle to see who accompanies almost-promoted Durham back to the top flight.

Having said that, if the Foxes get anything less than five bonus points over the course of the next two days, then Durham, who are withour a game this week, would be promoted.

As to who goes down, that is even more complicated . . .
