Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja led a mini recovery, but Nathan Lyon snared Jadeja for 48 shortly before the close as India limped to 151-5, still a mammoth 318 runs short of Australia's first innings score.

But any momentum gained from those quick wickets quickly stalled once Australia got their hands on the ball.

India slumped to 71-4 thanks to two pretty rotten leaves from Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara and some moments of magic from the Aussie seamers. The ball from Mitchell Starc to dismiss Virat Kohli was particularly special.

But India hit back, with Australia losing seven wickets for 108 runs to be dismissed for 469 during the afternoon session.

Mohammed Siraj was the pick of the India bowlers taking 4-108.

Australia bowler Scott Boland, speaking to TMS: "We are in a really good position. At the start of the day we'd have definitely taken it.

"My first experience with a red ball here and felt it came out OK personally. Hopefully we can get into it tomorrow and knock them over.

"It is like two mini series for us - one against India and five against England after this. We have all hit the ground running. The preparation has been fantastic.

"Nothing changes in my gameplan. I am trying to land the ball in a small box and not go away too far from that."

Australia bowler Scott Boland: "We are in a really good spot so hopefully we can get a few more wickets in the morning.

"The pitch is going a little bit up and down so it should be harder for the India batters tomorrow. A couple of balls were taking off, even when we were batting this morning, while a few have been keeping low as well. So it's nice."

The more you see of this Australia side you know it will not be easy for England. You can't guarantee England will go at six an over. There will be tough passages of play. You look at the Australia middle order of Labuschagne, Smith and Head and that is good.

It has been a battle for India. We have had 12 wickets for 293 runs. The scoring rate has been pretty good. It has been high-octane stuff. It is perfect preparation for the Ashes for Australia - a hard Test match in front of a big crowd.

Australia are in a very dominant position.

  9. Close of play - Ind 151-5published at 38 overs

Srikar Bharat opens the face and guides the ball down to third man and runs two to lift India to 151-5 at close.

Twelve wickets have fallen in an entertaining second day but it is Australia who are in a commanding position, with plenty of work to do for India.

  10. Ind 149-5published at 37.5 overs

Well that makes doubly sure this will be the last over of the day.

Three slips and a short leg in for Srikar Bharat, who goes for a wild swing and a miss. He plays the next delivery well, pushing the ball to mid-on, before letting the next ball go through to Alex Carey.

Final ball of the day coming up...

These tall Australian fast bowlers have made the ball talk today. We have talked about the Ashes and it is very difficult for England to come out and attack. If they out swinging against these bowlers they won't last long.

That hurts. Right on the end of the elbow.

  13. ouch!

    Ind 149-5published at 37.2 overs

It will be Mitchell Starc to bowl the final over of the day, leaving us 14 short of the scheduled total.

Ouch. Srikar Bharat is caught flush on the elbow. That would hurt.

    On comes the physio again.

When Pat Cummins was named captain there were questions with how he would go with the strategy. But today Lyon has come on and dismissed the left-hander and afterwards Cummins has straightaway made the change to bring Boland on.

  15. Ind 147-5published at 37 overs

Change of ends for Scott Boland and he gets another one to leap up at Srikar Bharat, who fends the ball off with a combination of glove and ribs before scampering through for a single.

Bharat calls for the physio, which will eat up a bit more time as we edge towards close.

Nathan Lyon wanted a bowl at the left-handed Ravindra Jadeja and this is why.

  17. Ind 145-5published at 36 overs

Srikar Bharat gets off the mark, driving a full Mitchell Starc delivery into the off side for two.

India are still a mammoth 324 runs behind. It would take something pretty special for them to get back into this match.

After last Ashes Test here in 2019, I said to Jos Buttler, who I knew from my Somerset days, "Ben Stokes, is he a good bloke?". He looked at me and said "JL, if you coached him you'd love him". Later in the night, we might have had a couple of beers, I had a Baggy Green cap, put it on his head and took him out of the dressing room. I said "you're coming with me".

  19. Ind 142-5published at 35 overs

Srikar Bharat is the new batter.

With around 15 minutes until close India will be in survival mode now.
