    Rahane 89, Thakur 36

Rahane is batting supremely now. He and thousands more at The Oval are enjoying themselves and for what feels like the first time since the first morning of the match Australia have things to think about other than what to choose for lunch.

He puts Lyon away for two more fours in this latest over.

You can understand why Australia have opted for the tactic of giving Rahane the single to bowl more at Thakur, given how much he struggled this morning.

But it can backfire. It has allowed them to build this handy little partnership.

  3. Ind 249-6published at 58 overs

He can't be Boromir. That's too harsh.

This is niche, I know, but I'm enjoying myself.

India are going to take the follow-on debate out of the equation.

Here's the real question about about which LOTR characters players are. Who is Joe Root? On the one hand he was a brave Captain fighting against the decline of his downbeat kingdom. But on the other hand he is overshadowed by the new Captain and just wasn't quite the leader the kingdom needed.

If these two make it through the 12 or so minutes until lunch then you'd have to call it India's session.

I didn't think I'd be saying that when Thakur was getting peppered earlier.

Now he clips Pat Cummins off his toes for four.

  6. Ind 244-6published at 57 overs

    Rahane 79, Thakur 31

The India physio is back out again at the end of Lyon's over.

He must just be trying to get the steps up on that smartwatch.

That's a loosener. Rahane has just placed it through the covers.

It has been a very spirited recovery from India since losing a wicket from the second ball of the day.

    Welcome, Garry.

Too wide and too full from Australia's spinner and Ajinkya Rahane smoothly puts the ball away.

These were the two earlier drops.

Warner made that third one look hard than it was.

Nathan Lyon is coming on for a bowl.

David Warner was going the wrong way, had to readjust, and it's like a goalkeeper's save in the end, palming it up and over.

Another tough chance but it's another drop.

It did go very, very quickly.

  12. dropped catch

Rahane dropped on 72published at 55.4 overs

A third dropped catch of the day!

This time it is David Warner putting down Ajinkya Rahane at first slip.

It looks like Warner has misjudged it. He was moving to his right but ended up throwing up a hand to try to catch it one-handed up to his left.

Legolas = Jimmy Anderson. Ageless and seemingly unable to miss.

Ajinkya Rahane got a nasty blow on his finger yesterday and Pat Cummins, immediately after returning to the attack, has struck him there again.

    On comes the physio.

Rahane has already got that finger bandaged up.

That is 5,000 Test runs for Ajinkya Rahane.

He is the 13th India player to do that, and this is his 83rd Test.

  16. Ind 234-6published at 55 overs

    Rahane 71, Thakur 30

The India fans are starting to enjoy themselves now. Shardul Thakur drops and runs to steal a single and then Rahane eases away another textbook drive - both shots are greeted with loud cheers and waving flags.

Pat Cummins is bringing himself on to try and quieten that support.

It was out there waiting to be hit, and Shardul Thakur fancied a bit of that!

Shardul Thakur has really battled hard. He didn't look like surviving, but he has shown great character and great courage.

Ajinkya Rahane is the old pro, the experienced head out there, but it is a partnership that can really lift a dressing room.

  19. Ind 229-6published at 54 overs

    Rahane 68, Thakur 29

Mitchell Starc is round the wicket to these two right-handers.

He gets one to whistle by the stumps, taking the thinnest of inside edges as it goes. Sadly for Australia, it doesn't carry to Alex Carey.

Too short from Starc later in the over. Clattered to the fence by Shardul Thakur to the sound of more wild cheers.
