Australia captain Pat Cummins makes his first bowling change of the morning, removing himself for the left-arm quick Mitchell Starc. Starc bowled one superb delivery to remove Virat Kohli yesterday but was the most expensive of the seamers.

He will probably get out now I've said this but Shardul Thakur is starting to look a least a little bit more comfortable.

India have actually done well to have only lost one wicket this morning.

Shardul Thakur is getting more treatment to his thumb.

  4. Ind 196-6published at 47 overs

    Rahane 52, Thakur 13

More runs - or leg byes to be precise off the hip of Shardul Thakur.

This is a good little period for India although it'll be another bruise for the all-rounder.

He'll look like he's wearing the polka dot King of the Mountains cycling jersey when he gets out of the shower tonight.

It has been a brilliant, battling innings.

It is his comeback innings, he might know it's his last chance, and he has been positive throughout.

He has been hit, had missed chances, but he has been tough and made the most of every opportunity to score.

It is a vital innings for himself, and for India. He often goes under the radar for India.

    It is all happening!

What a way to go to your half-century. Rahane was not afraid to take the short ball on from Cummins and the India fans are absolutely delighted.

    Where has that come from?!

Maybe India have decided attack is the best form of defence. Pat Cummins goes short and Ajinkya Rahane lifts a pull shot high over fine leg.

It brings up his fifty from 92 deliveries. He waves his bat to huge cheers.

That's a fair point, Phil. Who is Gandalf in the BazBall world? McCullum himself?

Can I just make the point that explosive devices didn’t exist until that moment at Helm's Deep. The BazBall of Middle Earth battles on that front.

  11. Ind 178-6published at 45 overs

India fans must be watching this through their fingers.

Ajinkya Rahane edges just short of Green, who is still in that gully position.

A wicket really could fall every ball here.

It makes Ajinkya Rahane's role here even more important. Just try and get him off strike for a bit and keep communicating with him.

But Shardul Thakur is a fighter.

Pat Cummins is in Shardul Thakur's head here.

If he keeps playing like this, he's eventually just going to nick off or have to be carried off.

It might be worth just having a go at a few shots.

  14. Ind 175-6published at 44 overs

This is almost cruel on Shardul Thakur.

If he's not edging the ball he's getting hit. His ribcage is the latest area to be peppered by Pat Cummins.

It was a pretty regulation chance. You would always expect him to take that.

Shardul Thakur has had a very difficult time out there.

    Put down again!

Cameron Green, usually immaculate in the gully, spills a straightforward chance.

Shardul Thakur is onto his third life.

Shardul Thakur's instinct will be to counter-attack. It won't be easy on this pitch but playing a few shots might actually be the best way to go.

  19. Ind 173-6published at 43 overs

    Rahane 39, Thakur 8

Some respite for India. Shardul Thakur, having seen the ball before zips past his edge, leans forward to get the ball away to the fence.

There can be few tougher examinations than this first half hour.

I still think the best way for Australia to win would be for them to completely bat India out of the game.

They will also have one eye on the next six weeks, and they will want their bowlers to be as fresh and ferocious as they have been in this Test.
