When Marnus Labuschagne got out Australia's lead was 297.

But Alex Carey, with 41 not out, has steered Australia to the brink of safety.

Cameron Green also added 25 before his brain fade.

There's a car show going on outside our office today. That session was only marginally more interesting and that's saying something.

    Thanks Ffion.

    Not a classic session, that.

And that signals my time to take a break, and hand over to Matt Henry once again to see you through the afternoon session.

Australia are well in the ascendancy now. Their bowlers have had a nice long rest and they will be ready to come out and hit the deck hard, a pitch that already has some variable bounce.

Pat Cummins will be very happy with his team's position. I think the win is firmly out of the equation for India now.

  6. Lunch - Aus 201-6published at 70 overs

Just a single from a quiet Umesh Yadav over and that'll be lunch.

Two wickets to India, while Australia have extended their lead to 374.

    Is that enough already?

A mixed session, with some intriguing contests brewing between Jadeja and the left-handers - but not much else.

Conor Martin: Surely Australia will want to bat until they've a lead of 400 plus? Maybe kick on and set India 450 to win maybe?

It is hard to play cross-batted shots out of the rough, and I think it might tempt Starc or Carey to try and play across the line if Rohit Sharma brings those leg-side fielders in.

It's how we see Ben Stokes set fields to Jack Leach - trying to force the batters to hit in the gaps.

  9. Aus 200-6published at 69 overs

Four! Beautifully driven for four by Alex Carey as Jadeja just tempts him with a bit of flight - and he accepts the challenge.

India are in such a precarious position.

They are aware that they can't afford to concede too many boundaries to take that lead further and further away, but then that allows them to run the singles very easily.

    Lead by 368

    Tick, tick, tick.

    Four from Thakur's over.

But it's all about the battle with Jadeja at the moment.

Australia surely have enough? Why risk an injury?

Rohit Sharma had his calculated head on there. You could see Virat Kohli pleading for him to review it.

  14. Aus 191-6published at 67 overs

And now almost caught at short leg!

India plead with the umpire, who is unmoved. And again, a good decision not to review as replays show it came off the pad.

Jadeja is causing all sorts of problems. How India must want another spinner...

  15. Aus 189-6published at 66.3 overs

    Oh, how has that missed?

Some sharp turn from Jadeja rips through Starc's bat and pad, and also through the keeper.

Four byes adds to Australia's ever-growing lead.

  16. Aus 185-6published at 66 overs

The runs are flowing a little more freely now, as Carey and Starc nudge and nurdle four from Shardul Thakur's over.

Here's how Australia lost Cameron Green, in rather unusual fashion.

There's really pronounced footmarks outside the off stump now. Ravi Jadeja is really firing it in and when it catches the corner it is so unpredictable about where the ball will end up.

  18. Aus 181-6published at 65 overs

Jadeja has another left-hander in Mitchell Starc to work with.

Starc wins the first part of the battle, edging down to third man for four.

The India fans at The Oval are still making plenty of noise. They have not lost an ounce of hope yet.

Why do Australia need to do anything but nudge and nurdle? If they can build a lead of 450 and give themselves 20 minutes before tea then 4 further sessions to bowl at India they win this game.

  20. Aus 177-6published at 64 overs

With 10 from the over, Australia's lead extends to 350.

It's going to take something very, very special from India.
