We will be back live here from 08:00 BST on Thursday for all the build-up to what is likely to be yet another thrilling contest.

Those saying we didn't lose it based on the Bairstow dismissal.... I bet we'd have been much closer had he remained in! In fact the way Stokes batted, I reckon Bairstow would have found the 43 we needed. It had everything to do with loosing and the Aussies knew it!

Can TMS maybe not just publish all the “against” messages? Nasser Hussain just summed it nicely on sky. He would have not have withdrawn it. They were smart. Small margins. It’s lazy from Bairstow and naïve to say that’s the reason we lost. We lost it in the first innings.

    Darren, Oxford.

The stumping wasn’t sporting but it was out. Annoyingly what it will do is ensure the media focus on that for our loss vs. player tactical faults. Whilst Stokes was brilliant there are players that need to improve and make better decisions and this will take the spotlight away from that.

  6. 'Ben Stokes is a freak of a player'published at 17:15 British Summer Time 2 July 2023

Here's more from Brendon McCullum to Sky Sports: "Ben Stokes is a freak of a player, he writes some scripts, he's our captain and leader and the faith that he has with the players and the way he carries himself, his morals, we are so lucky to have him and that's why we go into the third Test still believing.

"Results are important, we all want to win, we know everyone wants to be on the winning side, we don't question that. What we are trying to do is bounce off each other.

"We aren't going to be throwing it out because we are two nil down.

"This isn't our ceiling, we've been challenged by it but it shows that we want to get better."

  7. 'I don't think we're far away'published at 17:13 British Summer Time 2 July 2023

England's coach Brendon McCullum speaking to Sky Sports: "We've always spoke about trying to soak up the pressure.

"I don't think we're far away, we just have to adapt to the conditions better and hopefully our commitment will take us a long way.

"When you get out it is never going to look good, the plan for Australia was very good and they were able to challenge us in different ways. We tried to challenge them and the key for us is about being courageous enough to say where you're going to make the strokes and how you're going to play.

"We don't want to be in a position where we want to doubt ourselves.

"It was a great cricket wicket and presented differently challenges, we will make sure we will adapt.

"Duckett was good, we believe he is a very good player when you play against an attack like this and Zak Crawley too, they have shown us some great batting ability.

"Sometimes we're very judgemental on how we're dismissed, Brook will be thinking about what his method. For us, it's about allowing yourself to make a decision about how you are going to bat and then you live and die by that decision and you're able to invest in it 100 percent."

If Cummins thinks there was nothing untoward or sneaky in Bairstow's dismissal, and that Bairstow had been straying out of his crease too much before balls were technically dead, could he then perhaps explain what actual advantage he felt Bairstow was getting from doing that and why Cummins did not feel it merited a warning or a quiet word in the midst of a fairly finely-poised game?

Trying not to be too grumpy, London

"It's like the catch yesterday. That's how I saw it", says Pat Cummins. It's not though, is it, Pat. The catch was an umpire's decision, Duckett was walking. This was cheap decision from an Aussie player.

  9. 'Stumping was as much out as my catch wasn't out'published at 17:07 British Summer Time 2 July 2023

Australia bowler Mitchell Starc, speaking on Sky Sports about his 'catch' on day four: "At all times, I thought I had control of the ball.

"There have been plenty of catches in the past that I think have been very similar and been deemed fair, perhaps not been looked at as closely.

"The stumping was as much out as mine wasn't out.

"To the letter of the law, it's not out and we move on."

Just off to the bookies. I wonder what odds they'll give me on 3 'mankads' in Australia's first innings in the third Test?

    Disappointed in Hertfordshire

Suppose we will have to be on our guard for a Mankad as well now. Well played Australia. Letter of the law. Nice one.

Have to say - lost of respect for Aussie cricket today.

That interview was Cummins' opportunity to win back some credibility/respect and he's doubled down. Cannot wait for Thursday!

    Henry in Colchester

In reply to Cummins, I don't think there is a problem on any other ball of the over it is the fact it's the last ball is the problem. The umpires made it seem as though the over was done in my opinion.

  13. 'I can’t imagine we’ll be having a beer any time soon'published at 16:59 British Summer Time 2 July 2023

England coach Brendon McCullum to BBC TMS: "The innings from Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad was something for us to hold to but are 2-0 down. But this is an opportunity to smooth out those rough edges. We head to Headingley and look forward to that challenge."

On Jonny Bairstow's dismissal: "I think it was more about the spirit of the game and when you become older and more mature you realise the game and the spirit of it is something you need to protect. You have to make decisions in the moment and they can have affects on games and people's characters.

"By the letter of the law he is out. Jonny was not trying to take a run and the umpires had called over. It is one of those difficult ones to swallow and you look at the small margins it is incredibly disappointing.

"But lots of people will have their opinion on both sides of the fence. But the most disappointing thing is that it will be the most talked about event of a great Test match."

Will it impact will it have on relations between the teams: “I can’t imagine we’ll be having a beer any time soon.”

  14. 'Do I want to win in that manner? No'published at 16:58 British Summer Time 2 July 2023

England's Ben Stokes speaking to TMS: "We nearly got there but nearly is not enough unfortunately.

On the Bairstow dismissal: "My thoughts around it is when is it justified that umpires have called 'over'? Does the square leg umpire making some movement justify that? Jonny Bairstow was in his crease and then came out to have a chat in the middle. I'm not disputing if it was out, it was.

"If it was on the other side then I would have had a harder chat with the umpires about if 'over' was called. Do I want to win in that manner? No.

"I think when you're out in the middle you do hear and see that the crowd have gone up a level. With Broady, those things get him going. He stuck out there taking blows and needs that to get the best out of the situation.

"My innings wasn't a response to the dismissal, it was a response to where the game was. I felt my scoring option was batting on this end with the slope coming towards me. I had to be mindful and strategic about the risk I was going to take and felt my best options was taking the fielders out of play.

"I think the last 18 months, Brendon has been trying to get complete and utter clarity, the worst thing is you can think: "Do I or don't I?" We're saying if you want to have a mindset of the playing the game the way you want to, there is no second guessing. When I played I wanted to ride this out till the end of the day, I walked out with complete clarity about how I wanted to take the ball on. I think a big part of it is the balls.

On relations with the Australians: "I don't know, it's the Ashes, you go back in the 70's there's always niggles in Ashes series and something that sparks debates, that's the beauty there is no other series like this.

"It's always frustrating but now we have the opportunity to win 3-2. We beat New Zealand and Pakistan 3-0 so we know we can do it."

  16. 'I thought it was totally fair play'published at 16:56 British Summer Time 2 July 2023

Australia captain Pat Cummins: "Another wonderful game, right down to the wire. Stokesy gave us a few heart stopping moments and the crowd seemed to enjoy it.

"Having a world-class player like Ben on the top of his game, you start thinking 'that boundary looks short' - I was glad to have 200 on the board rather than 100 like Headingley.

"Just trying to stay patient, have the fields out. He did well to keep getting himself on strike but we were happy with them going at two an over."

On the Bairstow wicket: "I think Carey saw it happen a few balls previous, there was no pause. Catch it and throw at the stumps. I thought it was totally fair play. I know some people disagree but it's like the catch yesterday. That's how I saw it."

On overcoming conditions and injury to win: "Losing Nathan Lyon, those games are set up for him on day five. So to lose him and still win is huge. A huge win."

On Lyon batting: "I wasn't particularly happy but he was pretty keen to get out there. He did an amazing job and those 15-20 look pretty important at the end.

"I'd imagine so (done for the series). We've got Toddy Murphy here, who played in India and did a great job so he'll be sticking around."

  17. 'There was nothing untoward - You're meant to stay in your crease'published at 16:48 British Summer Time 2 July 2023

Australia's skipper Pat Cummins speaking to TMS: "A fantastic game like Edgbaston, not much more to say.

On the Jonny Bairstow decision, do you have any regrets: "No.

"I think it's a rare dismissal. There was nothing untoward or sneaky. Jonny was leaving his crease every ball. He did it four or five balls. You're meant to stay in your crease in cricket. Bairstow has tried it with a lot of our guys.

Ben Stokes said if it was him he would have withdrawn the decision: "Ok.

Any bad blood between the teams?: "Not from our team, you might have to ask them. It was a wonderful contest. It's been a great Ashes series so far. Those day fives were set up perfectly so really disappointed for Nathan Lyon. The way the batters soaked up the pressure was amazing

Short balls: There wasn't a lot in the wicket, there was no sideway movement.

Did it remind you of Headingley: "Of course, especially with someone like Ben Stokes, we had 200 on the board but there were a few heart-stopping moments, he played a great innings and I'm glad we got him out when he did.

"We couldn't be in a better position."

  18. 'All we are thinking about is 3-2'published at 16:45 British Summer Time 2 July 2023

More from England captain Ben Stokes: "When you win the toss and bowl you want to restrict a team to below 350. The lads got a bit of criticism but the amount of times it went past the bat was frustrating. The efforts that we put into this week, the spell of bowling short for hours, it cannot be faulted."

On England's batting approach in the first innings: "Reckless is an easy word to use. What we have managed to do is give everyone complete clarity about what they want to do. If you want to go in a certain way you have the backing of the dressing room to to that."

On Josh Tongue: "He has been brilliant. I didn't know him too well before the game against Ireland but the way he has taken responsibility, he has a mighty fine engine on him, he has been great find for us."

On the rest of the series: "2-0 down with three games left. All we are thinking about is 3-2."

  19. 'I would have had a think about the whole spirit of the game'published at 16:41 British Summer Time 2 July 2023

England captain Ben Stokes: "Having experienced something similar before you look back at things like that and have a game plan. I did look back at Headingley but unfortunately is wasn't enough.

"I got to the point where Australia changed their plans so I changed mine as well. It is a tough one to take getting so close but being involved in a great game is awesome. We are 2-0 down but we have three games left. We beat Pakistan and New Zealand 3-0 so that is how we have to look at it."

On the Jonny Bairstow dismissal: "There's lots of factors. I would ask the umpires whether they had called over. The made a move towards the end of the over. But at then of the day it is out. If the shoe was on the other foot I would have had a think about the whole spirit of the game. But is has happened. It was out. We have to move on."

  20. 'Stokes is unbelievable - he's a freak'published at 16:36 British Summer Time 2 July 2023

Player of the match, Australia's Steve Smith: "It was a bit of Deja vu, for sure [when Ben Stokes was batting].

"He's an unbelievable player, some of the things he can pull off. The way he went about it, he was pretty much just trying to hit one way. He's a freak.

"I dropped him so I was glad we got him in the end. I didn't pick it up initially, it's hard square of the wicket when he's going hard.

"The way he plays, chasing totals, he gets it done. It was just an incredible knock."

On his own century: "It was important to put a decent total on the board. We were looking to bowl with the overheads and grass on the pitch. It was a great game of cricket in the end."

On the short ball taking wickets: "It was two-paced, variable bounce as the ball got older. It wasn't easy and there was not a lot on offer when you pitched it up. It was the one way to get wickets because people on both sides kept playing it.

"We played it the same [as England] in the second innings. It wasn't easy with the pace and bounce off the wicket, especially when the ball got older. We wanted to keep the scoreboard ticking and build as many runs as we could."

On Nathan Lyon coming out to bat: "They play a dangerous brand and they like chasing. There wasn't much in the surface for the seamers so Nathan showed a lot courage and got some crucial runs."
