I was going to say it is unusual for a leg-spinner who throws it up to be so successful these days, it is usually the ones who throw it flatter like Rashid Khan who do well.

Right on cue the first ball was tossed up a mile and it was an outstanding cricket shot from Chapman.

    That is a massive blow.

  3. 6 runs

    NZ 44-3published at 6.1 overs

Adil Rashid is into the attack and Mark Chapman smashes his first ball high over deep mid-wicket for six!

  4. NZ 38-3published at 6 overs

Luke Wood is fired up and clocks 91mph with a delivery that new batter Mark Chapman (not that one) plays inside the line of.

The left-handed Chapman gets off the mark next ball with a crisp drive through the covers.

It doesn't have the legs to reach the boundary but the batters are able to run three.

That's the end of a successful powerplay for England. Having been 18-0 after five balls, New Zealand are 20-3 from the next 31.

    That is a good delivery.

It is a little bit reckless from New Zealand, who obviously want to create a strike-rate. They are coming hard without any real tempo.

It was a tricky start for Luke Wood but he has fought back well.

England have got three wickets in the powerplay and the stats tell us that is highly significant in T20s.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 5.2 overs

    Seifert b L Wood 9 (NZ 35-3)

    Perfect response from Luke Wood!

The left-armer takes the pace off slightly and that is all it takes. Tim Seifert is through the shot early and the ball straightens a touch.

Off stump is knocked back and New Zealand are wobbling in the powerplay.

  8. NZ 35-2published at 5.1 overs

Luke Wood is into his third over and changes angle to round the wicket.

He gets his line wrong, though, and Tim Seifert is able to help the ball around the corner, fine and away for four.

Both New Zealand openers have been and gone now.

Devon Conway was the first to depart, feathering behind off the bowling of Luke Wood...

  10. NZ 31-2published at 5 overs

Brydon Carse could hardly have asked for a better start on his T20 debut for England.

After two overs, he's got figures of 1-3. Impressive stuff.

That is one of the challenges for Finn Allen, working out the balance between attack and defence. Sometimes he can get stuck in the middle and his feet don't move.

That was a curious innings from Finn Allen. He faced 15 balls and scored 21 but 18 of them came with those three sixes.

  13. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 4.3 overs

    Allen b Carse 21 (NZ 31-2)

Bowled 'im! A first T20I wicket for Brydon Carse!

It's a beauty from the fast bowler to remove the dangerous Finn Allen.

The ball just nips back to peg back leg stump as Allen misses with an ambitious shot aimed leg side.

There’s a lady next to the media centre with the hood of her big fluffy coat up over her head. It’s not the warmest in the shade.

Left-armers are very expensive to buy in the IPL! It is just about that swing back into the right-hander against players that are looking to get on with it.

  16. NZ 29-1published at 4 overs

New batter Tim Seifert gets off the mark with a boundary to end the over, flicked confidently over mid-wicket.

It's a good over from Luke Wood all told, though, and a good comeback from England after that expensive first over.

Devon Conway was just a bit early on the ball. There was spongey bounce and a lack of pace off the pitch.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 3.3 overs

    Conway c Buttler b L Wood 3 (NZ 25-1)

Luke Wood returns to break the opening stand!

A change of ends does the trick for the left-armer. It's a length ball, Devon Conway goes at it with a big drive and feather behind.

Regulation catch for Jos Buttler. England have their first.

We speak a lot of about Finn Allen's strike-rate and since he made his debut in 2018 he has the third best strike-rate in all T20s, not just in internationals.

He scores at 168 per 100 balls. They are Jamie Overton, who strikes at 176, and Andre Russell at 169.

Speaking of which, here are those three sixes in a row from Finn Allen in the first over...
