  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 15.2 overs

    Malan c Jamieson b Santner 26 (Eng 138-4)

Good connection... but not enough! Dawid Malan picks out a diving Kyle Jamieson at deep square as the spin works again for New Zealand.

Malan tries to sweep a flat, straight one from Santner but doesn't go hard enough. Jamieson dives forward and takes a smart catch low to the ground.

    Malan's frustrations continue.

Jonny Bairstow made the pitch look like a belter earlier.

Nobody else has made it look quite so simple yet.

That is good stuff. The pressure was building. It is the big boundary but Liam Livingstone picked it up nicely and despite it being a slower ball his power got it over the line.

Since the fifth over there has only been one double-figure over.

  5. 6 runs

    Eng 137-3published at 15 overs

    Dot, dot, dot... six!

Tim Southee ties Liam Livingstone down brilliantly but he's not a batter you can keep quiet for very long.

He swipes over square leg for six, a high one that tempts the fielder for a long time before eventually falling clear of the ropes.

It is going to be a big score for England because there is still plenty of power to come but the three or four balls that Liam Livingstone is going to need and the five or six that Dawid Malan needed just eats up some time.

  7. Eng 129-3published at 14 overs

Liam Livingstone can finally stop shadow batting and get going with some actual batting.

He gets a single first ball to get off the mark comfortably.

Can New Zealand fight back by adding a couple more of these to their tally?

It is not a good delivery from Ish Sodhi. It was leg side and half way down the pitch and it should probably still be travelling.

    That is an excellent catch.

  11. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 13.4 overs

    Brook c Chapman b Sodhi 4 (Eng 126-3)

A horrible drag down from Ish Sodhi, but Harry Brook is caught on the boundary!

Brook tries to manipulate it to the short boundary by shuffling across in his crease, but doesn't get any timing and it flies high up in the air to square leg where Mark Chapman does well.

Ish Sodhi gives a wry smile. Got away with that one!

  12. Eng 126-2published at 13 overs

    Malan 24, Brook 4

    A horror over.

Dawid Malan clips a low full toss through mid-wicket for four more.

He's got himself ticking now, which is what he does. He can really destroy bowlers if his style works, and he gets himself set like this.

I would rather Kyle Jamieson had stuck with the plan of bowling wide with the pace off, try and get the batters hitting to the longer boundary. As soon as you go pace back on it brings in other options.

  14. Eng 120-2published at 12.3 overs

Well, Jamieson gets one straight (ish).

But Malan carves it past point for four.

  15. Eng 116-2published at 12.2 overs

    Kyle Jamieson is struggling.

He bowls three consecutive wides to Dawid Malan. It's not easy to pick up your strike-rate if you can't actually reach the ball, in fairness.

Maybe that will get Dawid Malan going.

  17. Eng 113-2published at 12.2 overs

A release shot from Dawid Malan as he clubs Kyle Jamieson back over his head for a much-needed boundary.

Harry Brook doesn't need to make another statement. How many statements does one player need to make?

A last chance for Harry Brook to make a point?

  20. Eng 108-2published at 12 overs

Time for Dawid Malan to kick on?

An interesting dynamic at the crease now. The one who many feel is under pressure for his World Cup spot, joined by the one who many think should be there instead.
