The ball sat up invitingly and the England Test skipper was always going to put that away. A great shot from Stokes.
Stokes 27, Buttler 17
A tidy enough over from Glenn Phillips is ruined by a drag-down to end it.
Ben Stokes is not missing out on that. The left-hander rocks back and pulls firmly in front of square for four.
Thanks, Tom. The game is still very delicately poised with New Zealand perhaps just having the upper hand.
But if Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler stick together for a while, that will soon change...
We have reached the midway point of England's innings, which means it is time for me to take a break.
Here is Sam Drury to guide you through to the interval.

It's a great effort from Daryl Mitchell. It would've been an absolute stunner if he took that.

That would've been one of the great catches. There was a moment Daryl Mitchell thought there could be a chance.
It's four - but there's more than a touch of fortune about it.
Rachin Ravindra drops one in short and Jos Buttler pulls through mid-wicket, with the diving Daryl Mitchell getting his fingertips to the ball as it whizzed past.
Here is how Joe Root's scratchy innings came to end. The Yorkshireman never really got going and the pressure told.

I like the fact that Liam Livingstone is next. I feel like he is someone who needs a long time at the crease to have a certain impact when you are trying to hit big sixes and make big scores. Sometimes, you have to remember how to build an innings and bat for the bulk of there remaining 27 overs.
Time for some more spin as Glenn Phillips, who played for Welsh Fire in the Hundred, enters the attack.
Ben Stokes is watchful first up, helping himself to just a single with a drive down to long-off.

Before that six, England had scored just eight runs from their previous 26 balls.

Not for the first time in his England career, Buttler targets straight down the ground at Cardiff.
Jos Buttler was listening. He just carted the ball back over Rachin Ravindra's head for the first six of the innings.

England have another rebuild stage. They are really struggling against Ravindra at the moment and his left arm spin.
Just two singles off Kyle Jamieson's latest over as New Zealand continue to put the squeeze on England.
They have hit just two boundaries from the last nine overs.
James Anderson
England bowler on BBC Test Match Special
Ferguson has bowled really quick, his pace is up and he has bowled with better rhythm. He looks better than he did in the T20s. Ravindra's bowling has looked difficult to bat against.
All of a sudden the pressure is on England as Jos Buttler joins Ben Stokes in the middle.
Rachin Ravindra has taken 2-8 from his four overs so far. His introduction has really stymied England's momentum.

England are trying to rebuild. Root is normally very good at manoeuvring the spinner but today, Root has struggled. He's gone for the big shot and all he can do is toe end it.
Root c Mitchell b Ravindra 6 (Eng 101-3)
The pressure tells on Joe Root, who never really got going in truth.
Root goes for the slog-sweep but is reaching for it slightly and can only top-edge into the sky, with Daryl Mitchell taking a smart catch at mid-wicket.
