Ben Stokes has had enough and comes steaming down the track to Kyle Jamieson, sending a thick edge down to third man that Lockie Ferguson fields but tumbles into the rope in the process.

A couple of singles bring up the England 100 to warm applause from the Cardiff crowd, who a sweltering in this late summer sun.

(not that I'm complaining after two months of cloud and drizzle).

  2. Eng 93-2published at 19 overs

Cardiff is hardly a spinners' paradise but Rachin Ravindra is 1-6 from this three overs so far, with just the two singles off his latest over.

  3. Eng 91-2published at 18 overs

I'd probably throw the Ashes into the mix as well. Some of the sessions during that series were relentless.

Anyway, back to the action and Ben Stokes helps himself to his first four of the innings with a clip off the hip that sends the ball away fine.

The pace of ODIs after recent Hundred and T20 cricket feels much slower.

England made a good start after losing the toss, but two quickfire wickets have dragged New Zealand back into the game.

  6. Not outpublished at 16.1 overs

He did. A huge inside edge as well.

That is a pretty poor review from New Zealand.

The players were already in position well before the umpire signalled not out.

  7. New Zealand reviewpublished at 16.1 overs

There is a huge appeal from Rachin Ravindra as the ball cannons into Joe Root's pads as he pushes forward.

The umpire says no but New Zealand send it upstairs - did Root inside edge this?

  8. Eng 81-2published at 15.5 overs

Ben Stokes very nearly goes first ball!

Lockie Ferguson again gets one to leap up off the surface to Stokes, who can only push at the ball and send it just over the leaping Glenn Phillips at backward point.

Here is the returning Ben Stokes, joining his old mucker Joe Root in the middle.

England suddenly have two new batters at the crease.

Well, we have a pretty easy winner for the loudest cheer of the day so far.

The fans are very happy to see Ben Stokes back!

That was a spicy delivery from Lockie Ferguson, 88mph and banged into the ground. Brook will be frustrated but I think the ball would've caught a lot of people out.

After a great start, England have lost two wickets in two overs.

    Brook c Latham b Ferguson 25 (Eng 80-2)

    Now Harry Brook is out!

Lockie Ferguson has looked lively so far and a short delivery with a bit of extra bounce that Harry Brook can only glove through to the wicketkeeper.

Joe Root is the next batter for his first ODI for more than a year.

Dawid Malan is back in the hutch after an enterprising 54 from 53 balls.

Dawid Malan is visibly cross with himself.

The square boundary here at Cardiff is enormous but I think he was still swishing his bat around in frustration by the time he got the the changing room.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 15 overs

    Malan b Ravindra 54 (Eng 80-1)

    New Zealand make the breakthrough!

Cardiff is not usually a happy hunting ground for spinners given the short straight boundaries, but it is the offy Rachin Ravindra who has got it.

There is more than a touch of fortune about this wicket though, as Dawid Malan steps across the stumps and inside edges onto his pads, with the ball bouncing and spinning back onto the stumps.

I wonder what has got Harry Brook laughing here?

  18. Eng 79-0published at 14 overs

    Brook 24, Malan 54

Lockie Ferguson continues for his second over and finally manages to extract some life from this pitch as he gets one to leap up at Harry Brook and fizz past the outside edge.

Kyle Jamieson then dives at full stretch at third man to deny Dawid Malan a boundary.

That completes a good over from Ferguson, who went for 12 in his first over but concedes just three here.

You can't bowl too short to either of these players now unless you get really good bounce. The bowlers need to put more effort to challenge the batters.
