  1. Eng 76-0published at 13 overs

Now Harry Brook is joining in the fun.

The tall figure of Kyle Jamieson bangs one in short, but even he cannot generate enough pace and bounce to trouble Brook, who pulls the ball through mid-wicket as the ball sits up invitingly just below his eyeline.

He has scored 50s against seven of the eight sides he has played ODIs against, the exception being his one match against Ireland. He has scored runs against all sorts of teams.

Malan is playing really, he's got his drives going, he's playing a great range of shots.

Every time it feels as if the pressure is building, Malan comes up with an innings, on the ground he made his England debut and announced himself as an international cricketer.

  5. 50 runs

50 for Dawid Malanpublished at 12 overs

Dawid Malan is sending a message to the selectors here.

He slashes at one over first slip for four, before a wristy clip through square leg brings up a 48-ball half-century.

  6. Eng 57-0published at 11 overs

    Shot!

Dawid Malan leaps onto a short ball from Kyle Jamieson and pulls away to the rope.

There was so much pre-match chat about Harry Brook, but it is his opening partner who is dominating at the moment.

  7. Postpublished at 13:17 British Summer Time 8 September 2023

It has been a very measured innings from Dawid Malan so far. He has not played many risky shots, but has made sure pretty much every bad ball he has faced has been sent to the rope.

That's the third time Henry's managed to beat the bat. What Malan has done well is hold his line and adjust.

  9. Eng 50-0published at 10 overs

With a bit more luck Matt Henry could have had a wicket. He again gets one to angle across the left-hander Dawid Malan but fails to snare the edge.

A single off the final delivery brings up the England 50. Malan has 36 of those, with Harry Brook looking pretty restrained on 14 from 21.

I wonder if there was a whiff of a shootout between Malan and Brook with the World Cup in mind. We wouldn't want a run out...

If you take Brook out of the team today and have Roy and Bairstow, you would still have to drop someone. Malan's name would get mentioned again. That's just the nature of having a strong squad, you've got to feel blessed. At the minute, we've got an embarrassment of riches and you have to be pleased with that.

  12. Eng 49-0published at 9 overs

Kyle Jamieson begins with a loosener that Dawid Malan dispatches away for four.

Malan is picking off the bad balls. Anything too wide or two straight is going to the rope.

Malan has four centuries in ODI cricket since June of last year. He's had some good form overall, 19 ODIs averaging 59 at a strike-rate of 92. He has put up some good numbers.

Brook has never opened before in 50 over cricket at any level.

  14. Eng 42-0published at 8 overs

These two look to be warming to their task after a rather quiet opening.

Harry Brook opens the face and guides the ball through the off side, but some fine felding prevents the four.

Matt Henry responds with a bit of aggression, forcing Brook to duck out of the way of a well-executed bouncer.

A change of bowling coming up as Kyle Jamieson prepares to enter the attack.

The two openers, especially Malan, have just been waiting for the bad ball and then just put it away.

  16. Eng 37-0published at 7 overs

    Great shot.

Dawid Malan is finally offered some width and he takes full advantage, driving the ball gloriously through the covers.

He repeats the shot two deliveries later.

After a slow start Malan is now a run-a-ball 28.

A pretty decent start for England, very watchable. New Zealand have managed to get some swing but England's openers have managed to deal with it well so far.

  18. Eng 29-0published at 6 overs

Ooh, good delivery from Matt Henry.

The New Zealand seamer angles one in to Harry Brook but the ball straightens off the pitch and flashes past his outside edge.

Later in the over Henry attempts a full, slower ball to Dawid Malan that is pushed back down the ground and to the rope.

It was a nice ball from Tim Southee, but David Malan gets enough on it with a thick inside edge to send it for four.

  20. Eng 22-0published at 5 overs

    Brook 8, Malan 14

Pressure lifted! Tim Southee bowls short and wide and Dawid Malan cuts it away for just the second boundary of the day.

Southee goes full a couple of balls later and Malan drives down the ground to the rope. Malan didn't time it perfectly but it had enough on it to reach the short straight boundary.
